The authors studied the menstual histories of 100 patients who had sought psychiatric help in order to determine the phase in which they came for help. A total of 100 selected patients were screened in the emergency room and the out patient department of neuropsychiatry of the Sacred heart hospital and Han Gang Sacred heart hospital, College of Medicine, Chung Ang University from Jan. 1. to Apr. 31, 1972. 27 being seen in the Emergency Room & 73 being in the out patient department. The results are following: 1. The seeking of psychiatric help by these 100 patients was found to occur most frequently during midcycle period (21 percent), followed by premenstrual phase (20 percent) and the menstruation (19 percent). 60 percent of our patients came to the hospital for psychiatric help during one of these three phases. 2. In the Emergency Room, patient's help was sought most frequently during the menstruation. It's findings was similar to those of Dalton for psychiatric admission. 3. In the out patient department, it was during the midcycle period (21.9 percent) that most visits were made, followed by the premenstrual period(21 percent), post menstrual period(5-8th day) (17.8 percent) and menstruation (13.5 percent). 4. The author, therefore, guessed that there was the relationship between the phases of the menstrual cycle & the development of psychiatric symptoms. In any case, further study of the frequency with which menstruation acts as a precipitating factor in psychiatric symptoms would seem to be indicated.
