중학생의 자유탐구 주제 선정을 돕기 위한 사전 활동의 효과 : 프랙털 성장 탐구의 사례

문제의 발견이 문제의 해결보다 더 어려운 경우도 많다. 자유탐구에서도 첫 번째 난관은 학생이 주도적으로 탐구 주제를 발견하는 일이다. 학생 주도의탐구에서 참고자료와 사전 활동이 주제 선정에 어떻게 도움을 주는지 알아보기 위해, 눈 결정의 프랙털 형성에 대한 실험 자료로 만든 활동지를 이용하여 학생들에게 프랙털 현상을 소개한 뒤에 전혀 다른 물질인 인산염 결정의 프랙털 형성에 대한 탐구를 진행하게 했다. 이로 부터, 학생들은 프랙털현상이 그들에게 생소함에도 불구하고 사전 활동에서 얻은 정보를 이용하여 인산염 결정의 형성에 관여하는 변인들을 스스로 찾아내고 탐구를 수행할수 있음을 알았다. 또한, 탐구 팀의 구성원이 공동 보고서를 제출할 때보다 구성원 모두에게 개별 보고서를 제출하게 했을 때 더 적극적인 사전 활동과탐구가 이루어짐을 알았다. 이 연구는 생소한 주제라 하더라도 적절한 참고자료를 제공하고 사전 활동을 기획하면 학생들이 주도적으로 문제를 발견하고 탐구를 수행할 수 있음을 알려준다. Often, finding problems is more difficult than solving problems. In an open inquiry also, the first difficulty is for students to findproper problems on their own. To study how providing properreferences and a chance of preactivity can help students findinquiry problems, we prepared references and workbook onthe snow crystal whose fractal shapes depend on the formationcondition. After this, we let students carry out open inquiry onthe formation of sodium phosphate crystal. Our observationfound that students could investigate parameters, decide on thetopics for research and perform the inquiry on themselves. Wealso found that compared to the team report when eachmember of the team submit a separate report, each student’sactivity was more active. This research indicated that properreferences and preactivity could help students to find researchtopics and carry out the inquiry even if the topic is unfamiliar.
