계성여학원은 1927년 한국 가톨릭교회의 첫 여성중등교육기관으로 설립되었다. 그러나 가사에 관한 과목을 교육하였고, 일본인 여성을 교육의 대상으로 하였기에 한국 가톨릭사에서는 특이한 사례라 할 수 있지만, 한민족사의 차원에서는 긍정적인 평가를 하기 어렵다. 1944년 8월 약 20년 동안 계속된 계성여학원의 폐원을 하나의 조건으로 계성여자상업전수학교가 설립되었다. 이 학교는 한국인을 대상으로 설립된 한국 가톨릭교회 최초의 여성중등교육기관이라는 점에서는 의미를 갖는다. 그러나 황국여성의 양성이라는 학교설립 취지서는, 제4차 조선교육령 시기에 설립된 모든 학교들이 명시해야 하는 설립 목적이었다 할지라도 많은 한계와 문제점을 드러낸다. 그것은 교육의 전시체제화, 전쟁에 대한 교육적인 측면에서의 협력이었기 때문이다. 그럼에도 그러한 어려운 시기에 여자중등학교를 설립하여 한국인 여성인재, 가톨릭 여성인재를 양성하고자 하였다는 점에서는 긍정적인 평가가 가능하다. In 1927, Geyseong Women’s Institution is established as a first catholic middle level women educatory system. The subjects of teaching are only house chore related and its demographics is mainly japanese women ; which makes the institution very conspicuous one in Korean catholic history but also makes it hard to assess the whole institution as a positive factor in the context of Korean nation’s history. On August 24, 1944, Geyseong Women’s Commercial Apprenticeship School is established on one condition of the termination of Geyseong Women’s Institution that has been 20 years till then. This school is very important for it has pupils of Korean women, which is first in Korean catholic history. Granting that in the fourth period of Choseon education docket, all the newly established schools are pushed to elucidate the same agenda as this school, its agenda relating equipping women, as empire subject, is so dishonorable that it shows flagrant defects and impediments. It makes an educational system into a War prep system, which is blatant affiliation to the War agitator in education field. However, the effort to establish a Women’s middle and high school for fostering Korean women workforce, especially Korean catholic women intellect, under the very harsh condition deserves high evaluation.
