Organic dyes with low dielectric constant have recently been suggested as a replacement for Cr/CrOx or carbon black in developing black matrices with low dielectric constants for liquid crystal displays. However, due to a spectral property of the dyes which generally shows narrow absorption range, black matrix based on dyes needs to be fabricated by material mixture method. In this study two dyes which can cover the whole visible region by the mixture method were synthesized based on perylene dyes and dye type, carbon black type and hybrid type black matrices were fabricated. The characterization of the dyes were investigated by UV-Visible spectrometer and thermogravimetric analysis. The thermal, optical and dielectric properties of the black matrices were examined by color spectroscopy, optical density measurement and impedance analysis.
Application of perylene dyes for low dielectric hybrid-type black matrices

Two perylene dyes having different absorption ranges were synthesized for an application in liquid crystal display black matrix. Hybrid-type and dye only-type black matrices were fabricated using the synthesized dyes and carbon black. Among the fabricated films, the hybrid-type film, which contained the same weight ratio of the dyes and carbon black showed high thermal and optical properties and had a low dielectric constant. Additionally, the surface of the film had low root-mean-squared roughness (Rq) value and was sufficiently flat in comparison to the film containing different chromophores that showed self-aggregation of the dyes described in previous research.
Synthesis and characterization of zinc-phthalocyanine based dyes for LCD color filter

In order to improve optical performance of green color filters, structurally isomeric tetra-substituted zinc-phthlaocyanine dyes were synthesized. Precursors were prepared by nucleophilic aromatic substitution reaction between nitrophthalonitrile and three kinds of phenols. The substituent, 4-allyl-2-methoxyphenol or 2-allyl-6-methoxyphenol, was introduced at the peripheral position in order to improve affinity with binder and solubility of the phthalocyanine. Zn was chosen as coordination metal, to increase thermal stability and to fine-tune the spectral property of the complex. Structure analysis of synthesized dyes were confirmed by NMR, MALDI-TOF, IR and elemental analysis. For application of PCs to LCD color filter, Solubility in industrial and common organic solvents were tested. In addition, spectral and thermal properties of PCs were investigated by UV-vis spectrometer, TGA and DSC.

Two novel quinacridone (QNC) dyes with thiophene or benzene-conjugated bridge and cyanoacrylic acid acceptor were first designed and synthesized for use in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The absorption spectra, electrochemical and photovoltaic properties of these dyes were investigated. Under simulated AM 1.5G irradiation conditions, the solar cell based on the quinacridone dye containing thiophene as a bridge unit had a short-circuit photocurrent density of 8.51 mA·cm^−2, an open-circuit voltage of 643.6 mV, and a fill factor of 0.70, corresponding to an overall conversion efficiency of 3.86%.
