Instructional Routines and Questioning Patterns in ESL Composition Classes

The goal of this study was to investigate the nature of the English as Second Language (ESL) composition class with regard to discourse patterns or communication between teachers and students, using classroom discourse analysis. The foci of this study were on instructional routines and questioning patterns. This study was conducted based on the belief that the analysis of classroom discourse is a powerful means for understanding the discourses in the ESL composition class and its impact on students' writing. This study explored the functions of oral language in ESL composition classes at a state university in the US. For the exploration, oral communication for two ESL composition classes was audiotaped and transcribed to examine discourse patterns in different activities, such as an introduction of a new unit, topic invention, text analyzing, and conferencing. In analyzing these activities, a set of discourse categories were employed. This study discovered that teachers in two ESL used different routines, and procedural question was most frequently used in these two classes. The results of this study using classroom discourse analysis will be helpful in achieving the productivity and flow of teaching ESL composition, along with useful engagement among discourse participants. In addition to helping teachers better manage the talk occurring in their composition classes, the applications from this study can be employed to meet different instructional goals.

How Do Students Borrow Texts? Textual Borrowing as Transferable Content in L2 Writing Instruction

Textual borrowing is a natural process where students involve reading that is underlying in academic writing. Therefore, textual borrowing should be dealt with not to accuse students of their unorthodox practice, often called plagiarism, but to improve students’ critical use of texts in developing their argument. To facilitate students' textual borrowing, first, it is needed to clarify and discuss different strategies that students use in developing their argument. For this purpose, this research investigated the strategies that students used to integrate ideas from researched sources. To explore the textual borrowing strategies, twenty writing samples from first-year international undergraduate students at one North American university. This study provided a detailed discussion about the students' textual borrowing strategies, as well as implications for practice in L2 writing education.

The purpose of this study is to explore the approaches and purposes of introducing reading materials during instructional procedures in the L2 writing class. This exploration is carried out via classroom talk. Reading or analyzing reading materials is common in L2 writing instruction. Also, there have been continuous studies on the connection between reading and writing. However, it is rare to encounter research studies, based on classroom discourse, that demonstrate how teachers process reading materials in L2 writing instruction, what orienting purposes are for using a certain text, and when teachers present the readings within the entire writing process. Analyzing the primary data of observation notes and transcripts of classroom interactions with other supplementing instructional documents, this classroom research responds to two research questions: 1) In which instructional procedures are reading materials introduced? 2) What are the interactional sequences and explicit purposes in processing each reading material? The findings show that different reading materials are introduced to various procedures in the writing process and consistent and evolving foci of text analyses are disclosed in the teacher’s instruction.
