A simple shear test as a prelimiary attempt to investigate the shear deformation of soil is performed in a condition of plane strain. The device which allows the measurements of displacements and strains under shear deformation in plane strain, is considered to be used in the experimental pursuit of strain and failure behavior of clayey soil.

To understand the behaviour of the reinforced sand an experimental study has been conducted using the modified direct shear box, and a consideration was made on the deformation of the reinforced and unreinforced sand. which was obtained through the streo image. It is demonstrated that the deformation pattern is considerably altered by the effect restricting the relative movement of sand grains due to the friction between sand and reinforcement. The reinforcement is considered to play a role in enlarging the deformation zone and lengthening the shear displacement to the failure of the reinforced specimen. It is suggested that the deformation as well as the stresss-train relationship of the compound material should be considered to understand the enhancement in the shear strength of the reinforced sand.

To investigate the mechanical response of reinforced clay due to the reinforcement which is oriented to resist compression, direct shear tests were conducted using the modified shear box. The results of tests were evaluated in terms of the internal deformation and the enhancement in shear strength of clay. It is found that the reinforcement resisting compression can significantly restrain the deformation of clay, and that the deformation patterns are very similar to those modified by reinforcement resisting tension. The compression-resistant reinforcement may be used to increase the shear strength of reinforced clay under undrained condition. Strength obtained from shear tests closely agrees with the theoretical prediction of the strength where the reinforcement resists the deformation of clay as tensile material. It is suggested that the reinforced clay behaves almost the same when the reinforcement functions as both compressive and tensile resisting material, and that the reinforced earth may reasonably be defined by taking into account the effect of compression resistance of reinforcement.

To investigate the deformation behaviour of the reinforced soil, an experimental study has been conducted using the modified shear box. The test results were represented in terms of the equi-displacement contours to figure as internal deformation of the reinforced soil. An experimental evidence is considered to demonstrate that the enhanced shear strength of the reinforced soil may be directly proportional to the increased amount of deformation defined as product of displacement and deformed area. It is suggested that a further study on deformation effects would be a reasonable approach to a better understanding of mechanical behavior of the reinforced soil.

To investigate the enhancement in shear strength of reinforced earth an experimental study has been conducted using the modified shear box. The results of tests were evaluated in terms of the internal deformation and shear strength of soils, clay and sand. It is considered that there might be a similarity in the deformation between reinforced clay and sand, which is characterized as enlargement of deformation zone and restriction of relative movement of soils. It is suggest that the reinforcement plays a role in modifying the deformation of reinforced earth which results in the enhancement of shear strength, and that the reinforced earth may reasonably be understood by taking into account the altered deformation due to the inclusion of reinforcement.

With 19 different powders of finely particulated solids finer than 120 micrometer in the average size, their angle of repode which gives an index for powder flowability was measured by means of the rectangular test box made of acrylics, its dimensions; 12×8×2.5cm. And the bottom pressure of the sample powder charged in the test silo was also measured with a dial gauge indicating the deflection of the thin metal film sensing the pressure developed. The angle of repose increases with the decreasing particle size below to 60 through 70 micrometer, but, for the particle size smaller than that range, the angle of repose tends to decrease slightly again. Influence of the relative humidity on the repose angle is significant only above 50% of relative humidity. With the rectangular test box, it is possible to measure the repose angle of fine powders even at higher humidities. The bottom pressure of fine powders has been found to be directly proportional to the bulk density and to the particle size of the powders. Nearly at 70% of relative humidity, the bottom pressure reaches maximum value, comparing with those for all other ranges of humidity.

The paper concerns the use of the non-woven geotextile as a filtering element of earth dam. A laboratory experiment by which the filter benaviour of non-woven geotextile on the soil chosen as the representative of the core earth dam may be investigated is presented. It is observed that at the boundary between the soil and geotextild, soil particles are reoriented to be a thin filter layer which is considered to enhance the filter ability of soil geotextile system, and that the geotextile filter functions more efficiently than the conventional granular filter in both draining the water entering the filter and preventing particles being carried in from the adjacent soil. The experimental observation that the use of geotextile might be beneficial to the filter performance in earth dam, is considered to warrant further research to understand the filter behaviours of the geotextile.
