Ephedra Herb is known to be effective in treating colds and asthma, as well as in hypotension, urticaria, and rhinitis. The main component of Ephedra Herb is alkaloids such as L-ephedrine, pseudoephedrine, norephedrine, and norpseudoephedrine, among which ephedrine accounts for 30~90% of the total alkaloid. Ephedra Herb is also effective in treating obesity. In particular, ephedrine is known to treat obesity by sympatholytic action such as suppression of appetite, increase of heat production and metabolism, promotion of body fat decomposition, and inhibition of absorption of cholesterol in the small intestine. Obesity and intestinal microbiome are closely related to each other, and obesity can be treated by improvement gut microbiome. Ephedra Herb, which is effective in treating obesity, was tested to have a beneficial effect on gut microbiome in vitro. In this study, to investigate the intestinal prebiotics effect of Ephedra Herb, the doubling time change and cell density change of Esherichia coli O157, a harmful bacteria in the intestine, and Lactobacillus plantarum, a beneficial bacteria in the intestine, were evaluated. By treatment with Ephedra Herb extract, the doubling time of E. coli O157 and L. plantarum decreased by 56% and increased by 58%, respectively. As for the cell concentration, E. coli O157 was decreased by the treatment of Ephedra Herb extract, but L. plantarum increased. This study suggests that Ephedra Herb is a good material for improving intestinal microbiome. In future studies, we will investigate the biological correlation between obesity and intestinal microbiome by Ephedra Herb.
