In order to determine how the World Youth Taekwondo, Cultural & Tour Festival affected the community in which it was held, I joined the event, from August 18 to 22, 1998, which was held at Chungcheong College. The participants of the event were 204 foreigners from 19 nations and 443 Koreans from 38 teams. That was held in our country, for the first time, largely with Taekwondo games and cultural events. Unlike all the previous Taekwondo championships, this time it was held at a college, not at a field, with athletic, cultural and academic events. Its expected effect and impact on the community, where it was held, were as below: First, this championship offered a foundation that our country's totarisrn industry might be supported by some 50 million Taekwondo population in the world. Second, it served to develop the Korean military art culture into a new tourism event and let the world know our traditional culture. 734 Koreans and foreigners joined this championship that had the following effects: Culturally, it's known through our traditional cultural events, like the short training course of the traditional plays, calligraphy exhibition or traditional clothes show, that Korea had a fine cultural heritage. And economically, the tourism profit of 9 hundred million won was earned, and it's promoted to export sports goods and products of the small businesses in the province. All this made a great contribution to the regional economy. Third, it's planned to win the national project to build tentatively named Taekwondo part and hall, for the purpose of attracting the worldwide 50 million Taekwondo population. A survey was carried out to identify the factors affecting the smoking habits of 2, 515 South Korean students, who ranged from the fourth grade of Junior school to the second year of high school. The results indicated that over 19.3% of fifth year Junior school male students had already tried smoking. Furthermore, the percentage of male students who had smoked during the previous month steadily increased from 11% in the third year of high school to 39% in the second year of high school. The occurence of smokers among female students was not as high as among male students, particularly in the senior high school group. To identify the factors affecting smoking habits, stepwise discriminant analyses were conducted for each sex for both junior school and high school students. The factors employed as independent variables were as follows : smoking habits of parents; smoking habits of siblings, smoking habits of friends, experience of drinking alcohol, knowledge concerning health, attitude towards smoking, and eating habits. The results of the discriminant analyses showed that, for all groups, the three significant factors of greatest influence on smoking habits were the smoking habits of friends, attitude towards smoking, and experience of drinking alcohol.
