        婚俗의 親迎에 對하여

        安秉台(Ahn Byoung-tae) 한국민속학회 1972 韓國民俗學 Vol.5 No.1

In Korean matrimonial customs from anicent times until the Koryo dynasty a bridegroom as a general rule used to make a temporary stay at his bride’s house. Since the Koryo dynasty the newly married man engoyed a short sojourn at his wife’s house. But what with the influence of Confucianism and what with the Social system to hold a man in esteem, the nuptial manners suffered harsh citicism : thus a new marriage customs what was called “Chin-young (親迎)” : a bride was removed to her hushand’s house, was brought into effect in the reign of the King Saejong of Lee dynasty. Despite encouraging the procedure into execution by the Saejong Administration and Confucians, a remarkable result was not produced. Since old days there was another particular marriage customs called “Samil-Daeban(三日對飯)” : on the first dsy a wild goose was made a victim to God, on the second day the bridegroom’s friends were treated to a dinner, on the third day finally the wedding ceremony was celebrated. This wedding procedure is regarded as an ancient matrimonial manners : a bridegroom used to stay at his wife’s house for long, nowdays it remained to exert some influence over the three days-sojourn of a bridegroom at his wife’ house. The complicated manners of both “Samil-Daeban” and “Chin-Yong” was obliged to be transformed into a new nuptial procedure called “half-Chin Young” : on the wedding day the matrimonial service was held on the next day a bride took a removal to her husband’s house. Even the present time this “half-Ching Young” retains universal influence over most of the Korean nuptial customs. Thus the old Korean matrimonial traditions, a bridegroom made a long stay at the bride’s house, is gradually converted into a new one, and the bride removes to the bridegroom’s house soon after a few days-sojourn of the husband.
