본 연구는 사외이사의 사회적 연결(social tie)을 이용하여 이사회의 실질적 독립성을 측정하였고 이것이 기업가치에 미치는 영향을 실증적으로 분석하였다. 사외이사의 사회적 연결을 사외이사와 사내이사, 사외이사와 최대주주와의 관계로 나누어 살펴보았고 사회적 연결의 구체적인 점수 측정은 사회연결망 분석에서 사용되는 개념을 적용하였다. 분석결과에 따르면, 사외이사와 사내이사 간의 사회적 연결이 높아 이사회의 독립성이 저하되는 경우 기업가치에 부정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 반면 사외이사와 최대주주 간의 사회적 연결이 높은 것과 기업가치와는 통계적으로 뚜렷한 관계가 존재하지 않는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 본 연구의 결과는 이사회의 독립성 제고를 위해 도입된 우리나라의 사외이사제도의 개선의 필요성을 확인하였다는 점에서 의의를 가진다. 또한 이사회의 독립성을 사회연결망 분석에서 사용되는 기법을 이용해 측정한 점에서도 역시 중요한 의의를 가진다. This study empirically examines the effect of board independence on firm value by measuring social ties of outside directors with executive directors as well as controlling shareholder. The measurement of social ties of outside directors is deduced by adopting the concept in social network analysis. The results show that strong social ties between outside directors and executive directors reduces the level of the independence of board, and thereby results in a significant and negative effect on firm value. However, strong social ties between outside directors and the controlling shareholders have no significant relationship with the firm value. These empirical evidences suggest that outside director system of Korea which was intended to improve board’s independence should be reformed. Additionally, this study contributes to the application of different measures of board independence by adopting the technique of social network analysis.

본고는 텍스트 마이닝의 주요 방법론 및 경제 분석의 활용 사례를 소개하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 언어 특유의 다의성과 비정형성에도 불구하고 텍스트로부터 수치화된 정보를 추출해 내는 텍스트 마이닝을 활용할 경우 새로운 데이터를 만들거나 기존의 데이터를 보완할 수 있고, 기존 방법론으로 분석이 어려웠던 주제들에 대한 연구도 가능하다. 빅데이터와 전산 기술의 발전으로 텍스트 마이닝 방법론은 빠르게 발전하고 있으며 이미 학계, 산업계, 정부 부문에서 활발하게 연구되고 이용되고 있다. 기존 데이터 및 방법론을 보완함과 동시에 새로운 정보를 제공하는 방법론으로 텍스트 마이닝의 수요는 더욱 증대될 것으로 기대한다. Text mining or natural language processing is a multi-discipline technique that can distill and obtain useful information from text. With the development of AI and increasing abundance of big data, text mining is becoming one of the essential technologies in the fields of business, governement and academia. In this regard, the purpose of this paper is to provide detailed description of how text data analysis can be used for economic analysis by reviewing the key methodologies and related literature. We expect that text mining will complement the limitation of current data and methodologies by serving as a new source of information.
