This study deals with the indentation and thermal effect characteristics of sapphire wafers after lapping process. The sapphire wafer was used for the thin film growth of GaN semiconductor even though there are large mismatches of lattice constants and coefficient of thermal expansions between them. The mechanically induced stress and strain at the wafer surface is a very complicated process due to the hardness of sapphire crystal structure. This mechanical stress and strain can be cured by thermal annealing process. The sapphire wafers were annealed at 800~1400℃ and then characterized by double crystal X-ray diffraction. The fracture mechanical property of the sapphire wafer was investigated by the indentation measurement. Sapphire wafer was recrystallized from α-Al₂O₃ phase to β-Al₂O₃ phase by heat treatment for 4 hours under N₂ gas environment at the temperature of 1200℃.

The high-voltage discharging filter was designed for the purification of exhaust gases in automobile. The filter was located on the exhaust line after the three-way catalyst and the front of muffler. The electric power of 160 W was applied with the voltage of 16 and 20 KV and the current of 10 and 8 mA, respectively. The experimental measurement on smoke density was performed by the implementation of the automobile named, "galloper", a product of Hyundai Motor Co. at the engine speed of 2000 rpm and brake on. The smoke opacity in optical absorption measurement was reduced from 1.5 to 0.6-1.0% by the operation of the discharge filter.

The high-voltage discharge/oxidation catalyst filter was designed to reduce the particulate emission in automobile. The filter was located on the exhaust pipe of engine. The electrical power of low current which have the high voltage was applied. The experimental measurement on smoke density was performed by the implementation of the automobile named, "Carnival", a product of KIA Motor ㏇ at the uniform engine speed and brake on. The smoke opacity in optical absorption measurement showed that the high voltage discharge/oxidation catalyst filter leads to reduce the amount of emission. To characterize the performance of the filter, we used various experimental equipment. The results showed that the adoption of filter reduced the amount of the particulate matters.
