This study suggests a method to grade groundwater quality quantitatively using statistical approaches for evaluating the quality of groundwater in wells included in the Groundwater Quality Monitoring Network (GQMN). The proposed analysis method is applied to GQMN data from 2001 to 2008 for nitrate nitrogen, chloride, trichloroethylene, potential of hydrogen (pH), and electrical conductivity. The analysis results are obtained as groundwater quality grades of the groundwater representing each of the monitoring stations. The degree of groundwater contamination is analysed for water quality parameters, district, and usage. The results show that the degree of groundwater contamination is relatively high by nitrate nitrogen, bacteria and electrical conductivity and at Seoul, Incheon, Gwangju, Gyeonggido and Jeollado. The degree of contamination by nitrate nitrogen and trichloroethylene is especially high when the groundwater is used for agricultural and industrial water, respectively. It is evaluated that potable groudnwater in GQMN is significantly vulnerable to nitrate nitrogen and bacteria contamination.

Understanding the thermohydraulic processes in the aquifer is necessary for a proper design of the aquifer thermal energy utilization system under given conditions. Experimental and numerical test were accomplished to evaluate the relationship between the geothermal heat exchanger operation and hydrogeological conditions in the open-loop geothermal system. Sand tank experiments were designed to investigate the open-loop geothermal system. Water injection and extract ion system as open-loop borehole heat exchanger was applied to observe the temperature changes in time at injection well, extraction well and ambient groundwater. The thermohydraulic transfer for heat storage was simulated using FEFLOW for two cases of extraction and injection phase operation in sand tank model. As one case, the movement of the thermal plume was simulated with variable locations of injection and extraction well. As another case, the simulation was performed with fixed location of injection and extraction well. The simulation and experimental results showed that the temperature distribution depends highly on the injected water temperature and the length of injection time and the groundwater flow and pumping rate sensitively affect the heat transfer.

Inlet fluid temperature of the BRE in the geothermal heat pump system depends on heat exchange rate between the refrigerant of the heat pump and the leaving fluid from the BRE. Because the outlet fluid temperature of the BHE varies with time, inlet fluid temperature has to vary with time. In this study, the module to calculate inlet fluid temperature is developed, which can consider the time-varying outlet fluid temperature and the heat exchange capacity of the heat pump. It is assumed that heat loss or gain of the leaving fluid from outlet to inlet of the BHE is negligible, except when the fluid contacts with the refrigerant of the heat pump. This module is combined with TOUGHREACT, a widely accepted three-dimensional numerical simulator for heat and water flow and geochemical reactions in geothermal systems and is applied to data analyses of the thermal response test.

To evaluate the effect of groundwater flow on the outlet temperature of a geothermal heat pump, 3 dimensional numerical simulations are performed considering both groundwater flow and pipe flow in the U-tube using TOUGHS, The present study involved the following 4 simulation cases (1) no groundwater flow, (2) slow groundwater flow (hydraulic conductivity: 1.0{times}10^{-9}m/s), (3) fast groundwater flow (hydraulic conductivity, 1.0{times}10^{-7}m/s), and (4) groundwater flow varying with the depth (hydraulic conductivity: 1.0{times}10^{-7}-1.0{times}10^{-10}m/s). The effect of groundwater flow on the outlet temperature is significant where hydraulic conductivity of aquifer is 1.0{times}10^{-7}m/s. Where hydraulic conductivity of aquifer is 1.0{times}10^{-10}m/s, however, that effect is negligible.

Public demand for the heat pump system as a next generation energy equipment is increasing for its eco-friendly and cost-effective advantage. Many researches have been concentrated on how to calculate and develop its own efficiency, while the possible effect of the heat pump operation on the whole subsurface temperature distribution is relatively less considered, During the current study, subsurface temperature disturbance caused by seasonal surface temperature cycle in Busan area and general W-tube heat pump operation is simulated in 3-dimensional heterogeneous medium. It shows that subsurface deeper than 10m from the surface remains nearly unchanged throughout the 4 seasons and groundwater convect ion in highly permeable layer near the surface acts like a main path of heat plume from heat pump system, This implies the significance of detail descript ion in shallow sedimentary layer or highly permeable layer which plays an important role on the regional flow advection and heat transfer. Also, the effect of groundwater convection increases when the arrangement of the 2 injection pipes and 2 extract ion well is maintained parallel to groundwater flow. Therefore, more careful and detail investigation is required before installation and operation of heat pump system that it may not cause any possible change of microbial ecosystem in the shallow subsurface environment or 'contamination of temperature' for groundwater use as well as the loss of efficiency of the equipment itself. This can also help to design the optimized grouting system for heat pump.
