불교미술사는 작품의 종교적 성격을 규명하는 도상학 분야와, 작품의 미적 조형성을 탐구하는 양식사 분야로 대별된다. 도상학 분야에서는 각 상이 내포한 의미를 해석하고, 양식사 분야에서는 시대에 따른 미의식의 변화를 추적한다. 기존의 미술사연구는 이 둘을 이원적으로 취급하였으며 양식사는 서양미술사조에 적용된 양식변천주기를 그대로 차용하였다. 그 결과 삼국시대 미술은 발전기 미술로 분류되고, 통일신라 미술은 전성기 미술로 정의되며, 고려시대 미술은 쇠퇴기 미술로 규정되었다. 본 연구는 우리나라 불교미술에 있어서 도상과 양식의 일원적 연관성을 밝히는데 있다. 이를 통해 우리나라 불교조각가들이 도상의 종교적 성격에 부합되게 미술양식을 선택적으로 적용하였다는 것을 이해할 수 있다. 이는 서양미술과 구별되는 것으로써 불교미술의 조형미학을 새롭게 정립할 근거를 제공한다. The artistic style of the Buddhist sculpture differs from one to another, depending on time and place. It is extremely difficult to make a chronicle of the Buddhist sculptures according to the style. The present study is made with a theory that the artistic style of the Buddhist sculpture depends on the iconographical characteristics. Their are many kinds of the God in the Buddhist pantheon. The most important of them are the Buddha. the Bodhisattvas. and the guardian Kings. Each Buddhist iconography is characterized with their own artistic style, i.e. the physical proportion, facial characteristic, massiveness of work, bodily movement. and depth of the carving. The Buddha image is characterized with massive body, and bold treatment. The Bodhisattva, on the other hand. is always represented clothed as princes and adorned with ornaments and crown. In the sculptural representation. the images of Bodhisattva are slander in body, and have a contra-posture. The guardian Kings are usually represented as warriors in armors, with an weapon in the hand. They are represented as powerfully muscled giants, half naked, heads shaved, and body twisted. The main aim of the present study is to bring out the role of the iconography in terms of the artistic style found on the Buddhist images of the Great Silla Dynasty.
