본 연구는 지역사회에서 생활하는 정신장애인의 사회적응과 가족기능에 관한 연구로 정신장애인의 주관적으로 인지하는 가족기능이 사회적응에 미치는 영향에 대해 알아보고, 가족기능이 사회적응에 영향을 줄때 재입원횟수가 어떻게 조절해주는지를 알아보는데 그 목적이 있다. 이러한 연구의 목적을 달성하기 위하여 퇴원 후 서울ㆍ경기지역에 소재한 병원의 외래, 사회복귀시설, 정신보건센터를 이용하고 있는 407명의 정신장애인을 대상으로 가족기능이 사회적응에 미치는 영향을 조사하였다. 구체적인 결론은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 정신장애인이 인지하는 가족기능이 긍정적일수록 사회적응을 잘하는 것으로 나타났다. 가족기능의 하위요인별로 사회적응에 미치는 영향을 살펴보면, 가족의 지지, 소외, 친밀도, 역할, 사회성, 갈등이 사회적응에 유의미하게 영향을 주었고, 권위는 유의미하지 않았다. 둘째, 가족기능 하위요인들 중 사회적응에 가장 큰 영향력을 가진 변인은 가족소외였으며, 그 다음이 가족갈등으로 나타났다. 셋째, 재입원횟수가 가족기능과 시회적응간의 조절효과를 살펴보았더니, 가족기능과 사회적응 사이에 재입원횟수가 유의미한 설명력을 가지고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 즉, 가족기능이 낮은 집단에서는 유병기간에 따라서 큰 차이가 나진 않았지만, 가족기능이 높은 집단에서는 유병기간이 짧은 경우에 사회적응을 잘하는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 가족기능이 낮은 집단에서는 재입원을 적게 할수록 사회적응을 잘하는 반면, 가족기능이 높은 집단에서는 재입원을 많이 할수록 사회적응을 잘하는 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 가족기능을 높이고 사회적응을 향상시키기 위해서는 정신장애인이나 그의 가족이 가족교육, 가족상담, 가족치료 동의 다양한 서비스를 받을 수 있어야 한다. 또한 가족들이 자조모임을 통하여 개인적인 스트레스와 부담을 줄이고 서로 지지를 주고받아야 정신장애인의 사회적응을 하는데 도움을 줄 수 있을 것이다. 그리고 정신장애인이나 가족을 위한 지역사회내의 자원들이 긴밀한 연계를 가지고 제공되어야 정신장애인이 지역사회에서 소외되지 않고 사회복귀에 성공할 수 있을 것이다. This paper is a study on the social adaptation of the mentally disabled who live in local communities and family function, and it aims toexamine the effect that family function as subjectively perceived by the mentally disabled has on their social adaptation, and how family function, when it affects social adaptation, moderates the frequency of re-hospitalization In order to achieve these study objectives, 407 mentally disabled people who use the hospitals that are located in Seoul and Gyeonggi area as out-patients, as well as the mental health centers and social welfare facilities, were used as subjects to investigate the effect of family function on social adaptation. The conclusions are as follows. First, the more positive family function was as perceived by the mentally disabled, the better they were shown to adapt socially. When the effects of the subordinate factors of family function on social adaptation were examined, family support, alienation, intimacy, role, sociality, and conflict had significant effect on social adaptation, while authority had no significant effect. Second, among the family function"s subordinate factors, the variable family alienation was found to exert the biggest influence on social adaptation, followed by family conflict. Third, when the frequency of re-hospitalization was examined as an indicator of family function"s effect on social adaptation, it was shown to have significant explanatory force for family function"s effect on social adaptation. In other words, in the group with low family function, fewer re-hospitalizations produced better social adaptation while in the group with high family function more re-hospitalization produced better social adaptation. Accordingly, in order to raise family function and enhance social adaptation, the mentally disabled or their families must have access to various services such as family education, family counseling, and family treatment. Also, the families must, through self-help gatherings, reduce personal stress and burdens, and give and receive support to and from each other in order to help the mentally disabled in their social adaptation Furthermore, the local community"s resources for the mentally disabled and their families must be intimately connected when they are provided in order for the mentally disabled to not become alienated from their local communities and succeed in returning to society.
