아시아계 미국문학 연구 : 변방적 자아상의 표현 Image of Marginal Self
권혁경,임진희 한국현대영미소설학회 1998 현대영미소설 Vol.5 No.2
The images of Asians in Eurocentric White America have been stereotyped as "Orientals." They are described by the mainstream groups with marked characteristics as abnormal, eccentric, exotic, and inferior. Asian American writers have tried to make Asians and Asian Americans visible, not as stereotypes or "others," but as real human beings. For that they have made the incessant effort to find a link of their experiences in Asia and in America through the interrelated sense of the nation, language, and self. Collective consciousness of Asian Americans due to the turmoil of modem history intermittent with longing and nostalgic dreaming of their mother countries has strongly influenced collective images of Asian Americans. Several characteristics of Asian Americans described in Asian-American literature can be categorized as immaturity, sense of being exiled, strong sense of family, marginality, on account of the loss of expression and identity. Especially language plays a great role in relating the generation and gender gaps. Through the process of restoring the forgotten narratives, Asian American history is restored. Through this process, Asian-Americans try to contribute to the development of the literary canon and images of New Asians free from the fixed images as the "model minority." Such an effort will greatly contribute to interracial relations within ethnic Americans and enhance the understanding between the East and the West.
