Management of indoor air quality of underground subway station is an important issue. The air handling unit (AHU) installed in the underground subway station is the main facility determining the air quality of station. Especially for removing particulate matters, it is important to operate the appropriate air filter. However, there is no quantitative test method for existing air filter in site. It is rarely known that the collection efficiency of air filter can satisfy the designed criteria or not. In this study, we set the reference method using the mini-volume air sampler inside the AHU to evaluate the collection efficiency of different types of air filters. In addition, we applied the portable instrument based on the light-scattering method to the efficiency test. The method we applied in this study can be used in the evaluation of air filter in site.

Particulate matter (PM) is one of the major indoor air pollutants especially in the subway station in Korea. In order to remove PM in the subway station, several kinds of PM removal system such as roll-filter, auto-washable air filter, demister, and electrostatic precipitator are used in the air handling unit (AHU) of subway station. However, those systems are faced to operation and maintenance problems since the filter-regeneration unit consisting of electrical or water jet parts is malfunctioned due to the high load of particulates and the filter material needs periodic replacement. In this study, we presented the novel air filtration system utilizing cyclone panels for removing PM in AHU. The system was designed based on numerical simulation test in terms of particle collection efficiency and pressure drop. The mock-up model was manufactured for experimental test and the results showed good feasibility.

Air conditioning of subway cabin is achieved by two separate air conditioners installed on the top of the cabin. Cooling air is supplied through the line duct on the ceiling through the whole cabin indoor evenly, and the return air is exhausted to the center area of ceiling. Depending on the indoor air quality, outdoor air is introduced into the cabin. A part of air is pressurized out through the exhaust duct by the positive pressure condition of cabin indoor. However, cabin indoor is not always maintained in a positve pressure by frequent door opening during operation. Therefore, outdoor air can be introduced through exhaust fan and tunnel air, highly polluted by fine particles can cause a indoor air pollution. In this study, we measured air velocity, pressure difference, and particle concentration in order to reveal the inflow of outdoor air. We found that outdoor air was introduced during the subway acceleration by the inertial force of indoor air.

More than 7 million persons use Seoul Metropolitan Subways (SMS) everyday and the number has been in increasing trend. With the increasing trend of concerns on indoor air quality(IAQ), the management of IAQ has become an important issue, especially in case of subway operators, because most of subway lines are placed underground with poor ventilation condition. The ultimate object of study develop independent cleaning device that reduce efficient fine particle and CO2. Urban subway has characteristics about proper clean air flow, must be installed in narrow space and maintenance cycle has enough time. Two layered electrically pre-charged filters were used for removing particulate matters and gas absorbers are packed between two layer filters for removing gases pollutants such CO₂, VOCs and HCHO. Urban subway has characteristics about proper clean air flow, must be installed in narrow space and maintenance cycle has enough time. SCAP prototype is producted as all in one method which decrease fine dust, CO₂ and noxious gas. and basic test carry out with quantity of wind, a gap of pressure, sampling efficiency.

The objective of this study is to assess a level of microbial contamination in the KTX. Investigation sites in the KTX were cabin, gateway, toilet and passenger seat. It was found that the mean concentrations of airborne bacteria and fungi were 157 CFU/㎥ and 84 CFU/㎥ , respectively, in all of the investigation sites of the KTX. They did not exceed the domestic standard (800 CFU/㎥) for airborne bacteria and the guideline (150 CFU/㎥ ) for airborne fungi recommended by WHO. Mean levels of bacteria and fungi distributed in passenger seat were 2.6×105 cfu/㎥ and 3.7×104 cfu/㎥ , respectively. The predominant genera identified in the KTX were Bacillus, Corynebacterium, Staphylococcus and Micrococcus for bacteria and Aspergillus, Cladosporium and Penicillium for fungi, respectively. Based on identification result, the profiles of airborne bacteria and fungi in the KTX was wholly similar to those of bacteria and fungi distributed in the passenger seat.

In the modern society various types of transportation mode are utilized among them the subway system is the one of the main transportation mode which more than 7.21 million people ride a day. Because of interests on the indoor air quality (IAQ) of underground public facilities concerns on IAQ of subway system by many people are increasing. There are several approach to improve IAQ of subway station such as installing platform screen door (PSD) frequent tunnel washing-out and etc however there has not been any attempt to improve IAQ of subway cabin inside. Most technologies for removing airborne particulate matters are known to be difficult to adopt on the subway cabin since the problem of maintenance cost. Therefore the ultimate object of this study is a practical development of cabin air cleaning system which can reduce the concentration of airborne particles and harmful gases at the same time. The subway cabin air purifier (SCAP) was developed for removing particulate matters and gases pollutants inside a cabin. The whole system was designed and the roll-filter device was manufactured based on numerical prediction results. It is expected that SCAP could reduce indoor air pollutants in the subway cabin practically and it can be applied to other part of transportation vehicles.

More than 7 million people use the Seoul metropolitan subway network daily. This number tends to increase due to the increase of oil price. Indoor air quality of electrical multiple unit (EMU) is strongly affected by outdoor air quality, however, indoor thermal comfort is subjected to heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) system of EMU. In general, air temperature, humidity, air velocity, surface temperature, and illumination are key parameters affecting thermal comfort of passenger. It is known that the well-designed HVAC system should improve the thermal comfort of passengers and should increase the energy efficiency of HVAC system also. In this study, we analyzed the thermal comfort of advanced EMU developed by Korea Railroad Research Institute by using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in order to find the optimum HVAC system which can improve thermal comfort of passengers with a minimal energy use.
