The purpose of this dissertation is attempt to find out the national territories by examining the assertion of chang Ji-Yeon who was a practical intellectual at a turning point in history from the end of 19th century to the beginning of 20th century. The results are summarized as follows: 1. Chang Ji-Yeon was a conservative Confucianist, but in 1898 he was innovated as an enlightenment philosopher. He changed to a self-strengthening thinker out of the consciousness about national crisis, and so he took part in the patriotic enlightenment when the Ulsa Treaty was settled in 1905 and Japanese ruling of Korea began. 2. His scholarship was based on History. As a strategy for the restoration of national sovereignty, he took a serious view of the territorial problems. He understood that history and geography are facilitating each other and he wrote several geographical books. 3. According to him, geography was a part of history, and he put emphasis on the importance of national territory, on which his Chin bun North Theory, Yoji Territory Theory, Imna Territory Theory, Kando Territory Theory.
