This study is the second half of the full study on「The significance and problems of the studio works focused on formulation of the design concept」. The main topics of the research are; 1) The early stage design process according to the types of the design concept. 2) The different development procedures of the same initial design concept. 3) The trial and error procedure of the concept development. The overall conclusion of the research are as follows; 1) The purpose of the education and the significance of concept formulation should be informed to the students in advance. 2) The procedure, content and presentation of the programming should be emphasized for the better results of concept-focused design method. 3) Methods of generating and transforming the design concept should be informed to the students in advance.
Unit Brief 분석을 통해 본 AA & Bartlett School의 설계교육 특성

이 연구는 AA & Bartlett 스쿨의 건축설계 교육내용을 2017-18년도 Unit Brief와 최종전시회 결과물을 중심으로 분석해 봄으로써, 진보적이고 실험적인 설계교육을 추구해온 대표적인 두 대학의 설계교육방식의 특성과 장점들을 국내의 설계교육에 도움이 되는 기본정보로 활용하고자 진행되었다. 그리고 연구절차는 다음과 같은 2단계를 통하여 이루어졌다. ① 현지 방문조사를 통한 최종 결과물 분석 : (예비조사) 2012년 6월 28일~7월 2일 -AA스쿨 최종 전시회 전시작품 조사 및 관련자료 (본조사) 2018년 7월 6일~8일, 16일~17일 -AA 및 바틀렛 스쿨 2018년도 최종 전시회 작품 조사 및 관련자료 수집 ② Unit Brief를 통한 설계주제 및 설계교육 특성 분석 : 2017, 2018년도에 발행된 AA & Bartlett 스쿨의 최종 전시회 작품집과 두 대학의 홈페이지에 소개된 각 Unit의 Brief를 통한 설계주제, keyword 및 개념, 설계도구 및 단계별 설계진행 내용 등을 분석하였다. This paper analyzes the contents of AA & Bartlett School's architectural design education focusing on the 2017-18 Unit Brief and Summer Show for explaining each Unit's tasks. As a result, we intend to utilize the characteristics and advantages of the design education methods of two representative universities that have pursued progressive and experimental design education as basic information to help our design education. The subjects of the investigation and analysis are ∙ Unit Brief, ∙ 2018 summer show exhibition, ∙ 2018 final exhibition booklet, etc. for the Intermediate Course and BSc Architecture Course of AA & Bartlett School. The contents of the analysis are ∙ design topics, ∙ keyword / concept / tool / design strategy ∙ Unit operation method, ∙ design education characteristics, ∙ representation characteristics, etc. Through the analysis, the design guidance and expression characteristics of these two universities are as follows: ① Emphasis on the exploratory and heuristic design process, ② Progression of step-by-step (1,2,3) design, ③ Emphasis on documentation and records of the entire design process including design portfolio, ④ design education through Vertical Studio, ⑤ emphasis on Technical Study, ⑥ various workshops and crits.

책의 주요내용은 저자가 미국유학시절에 배운 건축디자인이론과 미국에서의 설계사무소 실무경험을 바탕으로 하되, 보다 구체적으로는 그 후 70년대 말과 80년대 초반의 연구기간 중, Berkeley, M.I.T., Harvard대학의 설계스튜디오를 1년간 순회하면서 이들 대학의 설계스튜디오에서 교수들이 학생작품을 평가할 때 어떤 항목과 기준을 중심으로 진행하고 있는가를 일일이 기록하고 분석한 내용을 토대로 하고 있다. 따라서 건축디자인 분야는 물론, 사회 전체적으로 볼 때도 비평과 평가의 문화가 유독 낙후된 우리네 현실에서 건축의 디자인 평가부분에 하나의 획을 긋는 중요한 가치를 이 책은 지니고 있다. <br/> (본문중에서)

This study is the first half of the full study on「The significance and problems of the studio works focused on formulation of the design concept」. Initially, various meanings, spectrums, and types of the design concepts in the field of architectural design were examined and clarified by the literal research. Then, through the protocol analysis and questionaries, students' design concepts were analyzed from 1998 to 2004 (8-semester in 6-years)From these survey and analysis; 1) Some characteristics and types of design concepts in the studio works, 2) The source of the design concept, 3) The characteristics of the design concepts in different design conditions -could be summarized and clarified within the limits of the case study. And the overall conclusion of the research will be described in the second half of the full study.

Through the survey and analysis of the design process(form-generating procedure) with domestic architect as an object of this investigation ; Progressive process of design and design constraints, major concepts utilized in the designing, dominant ideas, and design-elements, partial conclusions are ; 1) In the progressive process of design, the part which teems with the uncertainty the most was transitional part between Planning stage and Schematic Design stage. And Planning stage, Schematic Design stage sequentially represented uncertainty. 2) Trial-and-Errors and feed-backs are densely presented in above-mentioned three stages in cluding the stage of Working Drawing. 3) The part in which the focal image of the form generated was between the latter half of the Planning stage and the first half of the Schematic Design stage, and Schematic Design stage, Planning stage following that in order.

This study was accomplished to find out the changing trend of formal composition m high-rise office buildings m Korea according to the period of their completion Basic method for survey and analysis was based on that of existing studies, but region for survey was defined to their locations. That is, form of high-rise office buildings gathered m a defined region according to their period of completion were surveyed and analyzed through the treatment of upper layers(Head) and lower layers(Base) and organization of openings and envelolyes.

Design education is an essential part of an architectural education. This study was accomplished to analyze design characteristics and weakness of students in detail at their design studio in terms of observation and record. The main issue of analysis is, a frequency and a cause of design alternatives, and weak points of design. And the results of analysis are as follows, ① conversion and overlapping of an axis is the man generator of design alternatives, ② exterior space design, man entrance, core design, design with the conversion and overlapping of an axis, section design concept and structural design concept-are thought to be weak points of student's design in general.
