조선에 들어 온 개신교 선교사들은 ‘병원과 학교’라는 근대의 도구를 가지고 선교하여 개혁적 기독교세력을 형성해 나갔다. 이렇게 개혁화된 최초의 조선 기독교인들은 조선 사회의 희망으로 떠올랐고,일제가 조선을 강점하던 시기에는 가장 강력한 반일세력으로 급부상하였으며 1919년 3ㆍ1운동의 주도세력이 될 수 있었다. 그러나 3ㆍ1운동 좌절 이후 반개혁 적으로 급선회한 조선 기독교는 사회주의자들의 반종교 대상으로 지목되어 극렬한 반기독교운동에 휘말리게 된다. 사회주의자들의 조직적인 반기독교운동에 대하여, 그들의 비판을 부분적으로 수용하고 개선방향을 찾기 위해 교회 밖에서 사회운동과 민족운동에 적극적으로 참여하던 기독교인들이 있었다. 바로 이들이 반개혁적으로 흘러버린 다수의 기독교인들에 비해 소수에 불과한 개혁주의자들이다. 이들의 적극적인 기독교적 개변의 재생이 1920-1930년대 ‘조선 기독교 사회주의’라는 새로운 물결을 형성하였고, 짧은 기간이지만 중기(中期) 일제 강점의 가장 어려운 시기에 조선 민중의 희망으로 등장하였다. 조선 기독교사회주의를 형성한 사상적 배경은 ‘애(愛)의 실천’과 ‘노동의 신성한 가치’와 ‘이상적 사회건설’에 두고 있다. 특히 ‘애’는 목적을 위 해 수단을 가리지 않는 사회주의자들의 폭력에 대비하는 가장 중요한 기독교사회주의의 실천의 기반이 되었고, 이것은 조선 기독교사회주의의 실제적 행위를 가능케 한 또 다른 사상인 노동의 신성한 가치와 이상적 사회건설을 설명자들의 있는 원인이 된다. Protestant Missionaries, who came to Joseon, were making their Christian conversional groups with the modern tools of ‘hospital and school’. The first Christian converts emerged as the hope of the Joseon society, and they possibly became the powerful Anti-Japanese group and the main power of the 3ㆍ1 movement of 1919 under the rule of Japanese imperialism. But Joseon Christianity, that suddenly became anti-conversional after the 3ㆍ1 movement failed, became the object of anti-religion movement of socialists and it were tangled with the violent anti-Christian movement. There were some ministers and Christians, who had worked outside of church for social and nationalist movement came to accept the socialist argument in order to improve this anti-Christian movement. These were minority conversionists in contrast to the majority of anti-conversional Christians. The restoration of their active Christian conversion ist position formed the new wave of 4Joseon Christian socialism’ from the 1920’s to the 1930’s, and became the hope of Joseon people in the middle period under the rule of Japanese imperialism even though it was short. The ideological background of Joseon Christian socialism, was based on “the practice of ‘love’,” "the sacred value of labor." and “the construction of ideal society." Especially, the ‘love’,became the most important foundation of practice of Christian socialism, by contrast with the violence of the socialists by fair means or foul. And it could explain the other ideologiesㆍthe ‘sacred value of labor’ and the ‘construction of ideal society,’ which brought about the real acts of ‘Joseon Christian socialism’.
