2002 APLAS Vol.2002 No.2
Trichloroethylene (TCE) is a frequently found contaminant in groundwater in Korea according to the recent survey of the Korean Ministry of Environment. This chlorinated aliphatic compound has been widely used as cleaning solvent and degreasing agent in industries. It is known to be carcinogenic and recalcitrant to biodegradation. To remediate TCE contaminated groundwater/soil, many researchers have developed reductive dechlorination methods, because its dechlorinated daughter products such as ethylene can be easily biodegraded into CO2 and H2O. Zero-valent iron (FeO) is the most widely studied reducing agent for dechlorination of TCE. Recently, cement amended with ferrous iron (Fe(Ⅱ)) has been reported to have comparable reducing power. In this paper, various slags, by-products from iron and steel industries, with or without Fe(Ⅱ) were investigated to find their abilities in reductively dechlorinating TCE by conducting batch slurry experiments. Screening experiments were conducted to test a total of 5 systems (steel converter slag, steel converter slag with Fe(Ⅱ), blast furnace slag, blast furnace slag with Fe(Ⅱ), 50% steel converter slag/50% blast furnace slag). Among these, the steel converter slag with Fe(Ⅱ) amendement was identified to be a potentially effective system for dechlorination. In the slag slurry containing 40 mM Fe(Ⅱ) at pH 12.6, 95% of TCE in 0.25 mM solution was degraded in 14 days. The degradation kinetics can be described by a pesudo-first-order rate law. The effect of ferric iron (Fe(Ⅲ)) addition in this system was also studied. Fe(Ⅲ) addition did not accelerate the rate of dechlorination as does in the cement/Fe(II) system. This is probably because the steel converter slag contains much larger amount of Fe(Ⅲ) for electron transfer than cement.
