The purpose of this study is to suggest strategies for vitalizing Jeju citrus export-specialized organization. To achieve the goal, the research has been focused on the establishment and standardization for fruit production practices that can keep a steady supply of high quality citrus fruit for export market, and followed by systematization of farms using the practices. According to the research findings, it is desirable that the high quality fruit production manual such as the Global GAP must be established, developed and prepared to train farm households. The establishment of the high quality fruit production manual is focused on the items as follows : 1) labor productivity enhancement by structural improvement of farm layout, 2) the practices for high-sugar-fruit production such as thinning out, irrigation and drainage system, and mulching with a poromeric sheet 3) productivity enhancement and quality improvement of fruit by cultivar improvement and virus-free nursery trees, 4) standardization of cultural practices throughout the citrus fruit production.

To investigate the practicality of a small scale softwood propagation plastic film tent and the rooting promoting effect of indole-3-butyric acid(IBA) for northern highbush blueberry, softwood cuttings of 3 varieties (Duke, Elizabeth, Elliot) were made after dipping in the IBA solutions of 100ppm, 300ppm, 500ppm, 1,000ppm for 2 hour, and 3,000ppm for 20 seconds, respectively. Two-way ANOVA confirmed the significant differences in the percentage of rooting of cutting, longest root length and rooting volume index (RVI) induced by IBA treatment, as well as the percentage of rooting of cutting and RVI among examined varieties. In particular, the highly significant difference was observed in th RVI for IBA treatment. However, there was no interactions between the auxin treatments and varieties. Spontaneous rooting ability (control) depends on the varieties, showing that the lowest rooting ability was observed in the 'Duke' (45%) followed by 'Elliot'(85%) and 'Elizabeth' (90%). In addition, the rooting of the examined 3 varieties were enhanced by both of short time (20sec) dipping treatment of low level solutions, and long time (2hr) dipping treatment of high level solution, with the remarkably promoted rooting of the 'Duke' cuttings.

The purpose of this research is to find what difficulties the agricultural successors, the Korea National College of Agriculture and Fisheries (KNCAF) graduates, face with in implementing eco-friendly agriculture in Jeju, and what solutions they can be provided with. This research, a case study on the basis of open-ended survey questions, has 6 cases out of 8 graduates who have or had implemented eco-friendly citrus farming. In Jeju, 24 graduates have involved in citrus farming. According to the case study, only one case was environment-friendly farming method at the pesticide-free level, and the others at organic farming level. All the cases have tried to alter main crops or to diversify management for coping with global climate change and market-opening. On analyzing operating cost to gain product of merchantable quality, it revealed that the environment-friendly farming method needs much more managing efforts than the conventional farming does. But to the contrary, the materials cost in the environment-friendly farming method was lower than in the conventional farming method. In the total production and the price, the environment-friendly farming was 20~50% lower and 10~50% higher than the conventional farming, respectively. Difficulties which the graduates confronted with in implementing the environment-friendly agriculture are as below. Firstly, many of the difficulties have resulted from lack of the environment-friendly farming techniques, and the high cost of farm scale improvement due to high price of land and topographical features of Jeju. Secondly, the agricultural successors, the KNCAF graduates, have trouble in obtaining approval of their parents to changeover from the conventional farming to the environment-friendly farming. Lastly, there is no advisory organizations and experts for environment-friendly farming in the given area. For shift to the environment-friendly farming, followings are needed. Agricultural Technology & Extension center, with cooperation of leading farms in environment-friendly farming, should have a key role in offering education and consults on the environment-friendly farming techniques. Also, this organization should inform rapidly the research results to the farmers, and their feed-back should be involved in the next research. Therefore, it is suggested that the forum called 'Environment-friendly Organic Farming Forum in Jeju' tentatively is organized.

Thermal and mechanical properties of flexible polyurethane foam modified by urushiol and cardanol which have been known to be antibiotic were investigated. It was observed from FT-IR spectra analysis that the urushiol reacted with isocyanate was participated in synthesis of polyurethane. It was also seen that the modification using urushiol and cardanol made the PU more thermally stable without deterioration of mechanical properties. The modified PU foams showed increased antibacterial properties compared with neat PU foam.

The aim of this study is to investigate to which degree farmers did the crop switching and cultivar renewal as a confrontational strategy to climate change, and which problems they had in that process, and then to provide the supporting plans for them. We conducted a questionnaire survey of 15 citrus farmers of the KNCAP graduates in Jeju Island. Most of the survey respondents agreed to the climate change of Jeju Island and the subtropical climate of its coastal area. The farmers have experienced irregular weather such as abnormal high temperature, frequent rain, and droughts, resulting in the harmful insects and new weeds attack. As the climate change strategies, they are adopting a greenhouse culture system, improving a soil drainage using reorganization of planting space, making a new pest management program, and trying to switch a crop to subtropical fruits. It is expected that 50% of the survey respondents have changed their crops or will do; and 73 % of them have changed cultivar or have a plan to do. Only a few farmers directly pointed to a reason for their efforts to change the crops or to renew the cultivars as the anti-climate change strategy, however, most farmers answered the reason was to increase profitability by meeting their consumers' tastes. Presently, it is not the anti-climate change strategy but increase of profitability by meeting the consumers' needs the reason why most of the survey respondents have changed their crops or renewed the cultivars, while a few of them switched their crops to a subtropical fruit trees due to climate change. On the crop switching, they had some difficulties such as a labor shortage, availability of land, operating costs and instable income. On the cultivar renewal, also, they encountered the lack of cultivating techniques for new cultivars and the dim future for the new market. In long-term perspective, Jeju's farmers need new information and educational programs about the effect of climate change on agriculture of Jeju, and cultivation techniques for new crops and new cultivars.
