The speed of sound in fluid is one of the most important parameters in the analytical prediction of the dynamic characteristics and performance of fluid power pipe systems. First, in this study a summary of several existing methods for measuring the speed of sound in the fluid in a pipe is presented. Their basic principles, advantages and limitations are compared. To improve old method's limitations, the author suggests a far simple measuring method of speed of sound in hydraulic pipe systems. The speed of sound in hose is obtained as data in frequency series. The computed results are compared with the experimental ones, and the validity of the new procedure to obtain speed of sound in hose is confirmed.

Seawater reverse osmosis(SWRO) desalination plants are being expanded to apply due to the advantages of lower energy consumption. The desalination plants tend to be larger considering the cost of capital, operation and maintenance, the research and development for high efficiency components is being accelerated. Hyosung Goodspings Inc. is developing a high efficiency energy recovery system for saving electric power consumption in the plants. Direction control valves of the energy recovery system have novel structure which combine poppets and spools to minimize leakage. The valves is able to reduce external power required to change the direction using pressure balancing parts. To apply the energy recovery system in the large plants, multiple energy recovery device is connected in parallel. The pilot scale system of parallel structure was manufactured, and it was tested the performance by a pilot plant.

ERDs(Energy Recovery Devices) helps to lower specific water cost by saving power consumption of the high pressure pumps in SWRO(Seawater Reverse Osmosis) desalination plants thus making the process more efficient and cheaper. This paper introduces a design of directional control valve for the ERD, which can realize high efficiency with the sliding poppet valve type by emans of the ultimate leakage protection in a pressure exchanger. The poppet valves are inherently the best method for leakage protection. And the ERD control valve is designed so that four poppets are controlled simultaneously by a single shaft. It is also designed to ensure the minimization of leakage as well as pressure loss. The pilot scale test(7.2m³/h) successfully showed high efficiency of 97% with this mechanism.
Wave speed Measurement in Viscoelastic Pipes

Firstly, several existing methods for measuring the wave speed in the fluid in a pipe are summarized. Their basic principles, advantages and limitations are compared. To improve the existing methods" limitations, the authors suggest a far simple method to obtain wave speed in viscoelastic pipes by using experimental pressure data measured in the object viscoelastic pipes. In the new method, flow in pipe is basically modeled by a transfer matrix method, and wave speed in pipe is obtained as data in frequency series. With the new measuring method, a frequency series wave speed data in quite broad range of frequency could be obtained in a single process of test with a very short test time. The wave speed in pipe as data in frequency series can be used to compute the pressure pulsation transsion in hydraulic pipe systems.

Governors control the revolution speed of heat engines such as diesel engines, steam turbines and gas turbines. Precise and prompt tests for the control performances of governors are essential both in governors' manufacturing processes and in governors' maintenance processes. In the conventional governor test systems controlled by analog type electronic controllers, the incorporation of heat engine's dynamics to the test system have been considered very difficult to realize. This study suggests a new governor test system controlled by a digital controller using a personal computer. The application of the digital controller to the test system instead of the analog type electronic controller have brought about the following advancements; (1) heat engine's dynamics could be implemented easily in the test system, (2) automatic test data acquisition both in steady state and in transient state enables us to save test time and to enhance the reliability of the tests.
