Arachidonic acid(AA) metabolites are known to play an important role in the development of inflammation and pathogenesis of periodontal disease. The bone resorbing activity of PGE_2 and elevated level of prostaglandins and thromboxane in inflamed gingiva, which are cyclooxygenase(C) products, has been well documented. However, since recent studies provide evidence that gingival tissue metabolizes AA mainly through lipoxygenase(L) pathway, we have started this study to show the exact profile of AA metabolism in gingival tissue. Fourteen individual periodontal pocket tissue(PPT) samples were obtained from patients with advanced periodontitis and incubated separately with ^14C-AA(0.2μCi). The tissue lipid extracts were separated by means of thin layer chromatography(TLC), and analyzed by means of autoradiography and TLC analyzer. Our work show that ^14C-AA metabolism in PPT is mainly via the L pathway(L products/C products=6.17) and that 12-HETE & 15-HETE(55.73% of total formed metabolites), to a lesser extent 5-HETE(6.21%), are the major L products formed. C products thromboxane B_2 (4.32%), 6-keto-PGF_1α & PGE_2 (4.42%) were also detected in much smaller amounts than L products. Indomethacin well-known C inhibitor, also inhibited L as well as C, that is the result similar to the reports of Paajanen et al.(1982) and Lessard et al.(1986). This phenomenon is being further investigated by use of partially purified L system.

Macrophage inflammatory protein (MIP)-1αcytokine which produces wide range of bioctivities such as proinflammatory, immunomodulatory, and hematopoietic modulatory actions. To determine whether MIP-1αacts as a negative regulator on the functions of lymphocyte, [³H]-thymidine incorporation test and flow cytometric analysis were performed by using human tonsil T cell, human peripheral blood T cell, and murine cytolytic T lymphocyte (CTL) line CTLL-2, The mresults were as follow. 1. When human tonsil T lymphocytes were stimulated with anti-CD3 monoclonal antibody (mAb), rate of T cell proliferation was about four times increased. 200ng/ml of MIP-1α inhibited anti-CD3 mAb-mediated T cell growth as much as 60% (P<0.05)> 2. The suppression of human peripheral T cell proliferation produced by MIP-1αwas dramatic, but variable among T cells derived from different individuals (40%∼90%). 3. MIP-1αinhibited the mproliferation of murine CTL line CTLL-2 as much as 75%(P<0.001). 4. WHen the MIP-1αwas added to human peripheral T cell, cell proporation of CD4+ helper T cell and CD8+ CTL were not noticeably affected. The expression level of CD4, not of Cd8, however, was down regulated by MIP-1αtreatment (27%∼82%).

The purpose of this investigation was to make a evalutation of the oral health of orthopedically handicapped children by considering the DMF rate, simplified debris, calculus, and hygience index of 44 orthopedic children. 1. The DMF rate of all examined children was 65.09% 2. Oral hygiene status of orthopedically haudicapped childredn was very poor and became worse by aging.

A clinico-statistical study was made of 237 case, 186 male and 51 female of oral and maxillofacial malignant cancer patients at Presbyterian Medical Center in Chon-ju between 1984 January and 1988 December. In 204 cases of the carcinoma, 154 cases were pathologically diagnosed as squamous cell carcinoma. More than 65% of the cases were clinically adbanced cases (stage III or IV), and 154 cases of 237 cases were treated. Most cases were treated by surgery (S) + radiation (R) +chemotherapy (C) or S + R or R + C. The expired cases were 20 cases. 11 cases of them were found in stage III.
