The acquisition of Korean learners reported speech in Japanese as a second language (JSL) and a foreign language (JFL) is based on not only the ability to comprehend someon e s message and judge the essence of the message, but also the ability to reproduce the message to convey to another. In this sense, reported speech ought to be taught and learned in all of the stages of a second language and a foreign language learning curriculum. However, teaching of reported speech in JSL and JFL does not go beyond the scope of a grammar lesson like basic changes form direct speech to indirect speech. Thus, this dissertation is an attempt to analyze errors which typically focus on problems of Korean learners' utterances. This study discusses the issue of the process of development of reported speech in JSL and JFL in Korean learners' Japaneseutterances.
