      • 玉樓夢과 紅樓夢小考

權友荇 東亞大學校 國語國文學科 1976 국어국문학 Vol.1 No.-

The history of Korean civilization has been influenced by that oh Chinese civilization. Furthermore, it is a matter of common knowledge that there has been a great Chinese influence in Korean literary works. The present article is intended to study the relationships of mutual influences from the standpoint of comparative literature and to clarify similarities and differences that can be found between Okru-mong and Hongru-mong. A comparative study of the structures, characters, and backgrounds of thought of both classics has shown that Okru-mong, a Korean classic and Hongru-mong, a Chinese classic, are of a similar type. This is demonstrated by the following three facts: First, both classics are based on the similar methodology of structure and refined style of expression; Second, the graphic representation of 'characters in either classic convinces the readers that they could be actual human beings in this world. Thirds, the world of thought revealed in either works is apparently a unified amalgamation of Confucianism, Buddhissm, and Taoism. The result of such a comparative study of both classics leads the writer to the conclusion that the ways of living and thinking in China and Korea at the end of the 17th century were akin to each other. It may well be said that comparative studies of Korean literature and foreign literatures will greatly contribute to the further development of our national literature.

      • 屍愛說話小考

權友荇 東亞大學校 大學院 1983 大學院論文集 Vol.7 No.-

Korean ghost love legends center around love affairs between a dead person's soul and l living person. They are divided into two types : a male ghost's love and a female ghost's love. The former concerns a man's wish to return to life and the latter has to do with a woman's faithfulness in following her husband in death. These legends constitute the old pattern for current ghost love stories in Korea. They are a reflction of our traditional way of thinking before the assimilation of foreign ideas, and a widespread expression of our ancestors' view on the immortality of human soul.

        < 황백호전 > 연구

        권우행 한국고소설학회 1999 古小說 硏究 Vol.7 No.1

Hwangbaekho-jeon is a version an ancient fictionedition of found in North Korea. This study attempts to investigate the female consciousness in the wedding discourse by an analysis of structure on the basis of its bibliography, the changed meaning of hero image and significance of quest discourse. As a result of this study, its conclusion can be obtained as follows: First, it can be seen that this fiction is the allegorized work of political aspects at the end of the Chosun dynasty, and that this reflects the last aspects of political reality as the sovereign order of the times became destroyed. Second, it can be observed that this fiction has its structure of hero novel type, but that this is approaching the denouement structure of premodern novel revealing the characteristics of popular literature unlike other hero novels from the viewpoint of things that its hero, as a son of poor farmer, becomes a common husband through a marriage after the completion of his tasks in the denouement. Third, the structure of quest discourse beginning from the question of his parents' death is not much divorced from the general type of quest hero discourse. People's dreams are reflected in the scenes that absurdity in the Heaven is abolished and justice is realized by their popular hero, and this means that this fiction bitterly criticizes the chaotic and corrupt politics at the end of the Chosun dynasty. Finally, the change of female consciousness can be witnessed in its wedding discourse. This point can be found in the scene that a girl named Ko finds faults with her father for his mistake and in her decisive actions. Her propose leads to a marriage and she displays her wit in order to overcome her handicap. In addition to these, a luxurious wedding ceremony reveals the characteristics of popular literature expressing the wish of common people. In conclusion, Hwangbaekho-jeon is a popular hero fiction in which their wish is expressed, and there the son of poor farmer abolishes absurdity and corruption, and he restores order and justice through the process of quest. It can be proved that the conscious world of people makes progress through this work.

      • 裵裨將傳의 諧謔性 考察

Humor is inseparably bound up with the language of a people in which it is suggested or expressed. That is why humor is more often than not very difficult to define. It would be better to try to understand it by reading the writings in which it is supposed to be happily expressed. By reading such masterpieces we could comprehend the mental characteristics of people's sense of humor. My concern in this article is to make an attempt at a tentative analysis of Paepichahang -cheon, a typical humorous story, which was written in anonywity in the 18th century Korea. The story has something in structure and content that is amusing and funny which every Korean can be senstively aware of. The story well testifies to the fact that sense of humor has existed as a natural and inseparable quality in the Korean. The element of humor could be found even in the legendary literature and anecdotes of the Yi Dynasty Kings. Paepcihang-Cheon is an expanded version of a historical narrative, The Inspector in a Kisaeng's Wardrode, contained in a book titled Sockchihae. According to Sockchihae, King Seongjong devised a scheme to find out whether or not one of his inspectors was fond of sex. In the Yi Dynasty most kings as well as their subjects indulged in humorous stories. In other words, all people for generations have enjoyed them. It can be argued that sense of humor has traditionally been of the main characteristics of the Korean people.

      • 「金山寺夢遊錄」의 背景연구 : 空間및 時代背景을 중심으로

권우행 東亞大學校 大學院 1990 大學院論文集 Vol.15 No.-

In general an ancient novel in Korea is mainly concerned with the development of its plot. Its background, social or historical, is too vague and inconsistent to lend itself to a definite interpretation. In modern times, however, the background of a novel is closely related with its hero's destiny and personal charactor, It is considered to be important in connection with the delineation of the theme of the work, The background plays an important part especially in a literary work based on historical facts. KumsansaMongiurok, the subject of the present study, is also one of the ancient novels which is based on history. The spatial and temporal background set up in the novel is less of the mere implication of the place and time that one "has a dream" than of the allegorical importance in suggesting the very theme of the work which the author works out elaborately. The Kumsan temple, as the spatial background of the novel, is the place where the author appraises the merits and demerits of successive kings, wishing for the foundation of a Buddhist coutry. The author's fixation of the background at the Kumsan temple has to do with the structure of narration as well. On the other hand, the temporal background as the end of the Chijeng year is the transition period of the Won dynasty and the Myong dinasty, the legitimate and the illegitimate, and China and non-China. It is also the period of restoration. The designation of background on the basis of historical facts is intended to lead to the author's serious reflection on the stern realities and his ardent wish for the birth of a savior who could improve the disordered political realities. In short, the provision of a background for KumsansaMongjurok at the Kumsan temple is allegorically suggestive of the author's revelation and appraisal and an ardent wish for the birth of a savior at the end of the Chijeng year.
