Balancing the Tension between Freedom and Responsibility through Peter F. Drucker’s MBO&SC

Matthew Minsuk Shin(신민석) 피터드러커 소사이어티 2016 창조와 혁신 Vol.9 No.2

The aim of this paper is to revisit and discuss the root of Peter F. Drucker’s main managerial philosophy: Management by Objectives and Self-control (MBO&SC). Based on an extensive review of Drucker and other management literature, this paper redefines MBO&SC not only as a management tool but also as a social tool that prevents society from totalitarian revival. In doing so, this paper introduces Drucker’s observation of on Kierkegaard’s ideas regarding the tension between freedom and responsibility. Then, this paper defines individual freedom and responsibility, as well as organizational freedom and responsibility. Lastly, this paper applies MBO&SC to business organizations’ eight key objective areas and describes how the ideas of MBO&SC balance the tension between freedom and responsibility within a business enterprise.

Childhood Primary Angiitis of the Central Nervous System Presenting as Isolated Middle Cerebral Artery Dissection

        Matthew Chung,Yong Woo Shin,권형민 대한신경초음파학회 2022 대한신경초음파학회지 (JNN) Vol.14 No.1

Isolated middle cerebral artery dissection and primary angiitis of the central nervous system are two rare but serious causes of ischemic stroke in children. We report a case of a patient who presented with headache, left-sided hemiparesis, and left hemi-hypoesthesia with acute cerebral infarction in the right middle cerebral artery territory. Brain magnetic resonance imaging showed isolated right middle cerebral artery dissection with arterial wall contrast enhancement extending beyond the length of the dissection and diffuse narrowing with stenosis in the right posterior cerebral artery suggesting angiitis. After exclusion of other diagnoses the patient was treated with corticosteroids and dual antiplatelet therapy. Follow up magnetic resonance imaging performed 4 months later showed partially improved contrast enhancement in the right middle cerebral artery and persistent narrowing and focal stenosis of the right posterior cerebral artery. Although rare, primary angiitis of the central nervous system should be considered in the differential diagnosis of acute stroke in children. High-resolution vessel wall imaging magnetic resonance studies can provide important information in determining the etiology of stroke.

The Relationship of Socioeconomic and Behavioral Risk Factors With Trends of Overweight in Korea

Shin, Jin Hee,Dupre, Matthew E.,Ostbye, Truls,Murphy, Gwen,Silberberg, Mina The Korean Society for Preventive Medicine 2015 Journal of Preventive Medicine and Public Health Vol.48 No.6

Objectives: Previous studies have shown that overweight (including obesity) has increased significantly in Korea in recent decades. However, it remains unclear whether this change has been uniform among all Koreans and to what extent socioeconomic and behavioral factors have contributed to this increase. Methods: Changes in overweight were estimated using data from the 1998, 2001, 2005, 2007-2009, and 2010-2012 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (n=55 761). Results: Overweight increased significantly among men but not among women between 1998 and 2012. Changes in socioeconomic and behavioral factors over the time period were not associated with overall trends for both men and women. However, we found significant differences in the prevalence of overweight relative to key risk factors. For men, overweight increased at a significantly greater rate among the non-exercising (predicted probability [PP] from 0.23 to 0.32] and high-calorie (PP from 0.18 to 0.37) groups compared to their active and lower-calorie counterparts, respectively. For women, overweight increased only among the non-exercising (PP from 0.27 to 0.28) and low-income (PP from 0.31 to 0.36) groups during this period. Conclusions: These findings suggest that programs aimed at reducing overweight should target Korean men and women in specific socioeconomic and behavioral risk groups differentially.

      • Operational planning and optimal sizing of microgrid considering multi-scale wind uncertainty

        Shin, Joohyun,Lee, Jay H.,Realff, Matthew J. Elsevier 2017 APPLIED ENERGY Vol.195 No.-

<P>Distributed and on-site energy generation and distribution systems employing renewable energy sources and energy storage devices (referred to as microgrids) have been proposed as a new design approach to meet our energy needs more reliably and with lower carbon footprint. Management of such a system is a multi-scale decision-making problem encompassing hourly dispatch, daily unit commitment (UC), and yearly sizing for which efficient formulations and solution algorithms are lacking thus far. Its dynamic nature and high uncertainty are additional factors in limiting efficient and reliable operation. In this study, two-stage stochastic programming (2SSP) for day-ahead UC and dispatch decisions is combined with a Markov decision process (MDP) evolving at a daily timescale. The one-day operation model is integrated with the MDP by using the value of a state of commitment and battery at the end of a day to ensure longer term implications of the decisions within the day are considered. In the MDP formulation, capturing daily evolving exogenous information, the value function is recursively approximated with sampled observations estimated from the daily 2SSP model. With this value function capturing all future operating costs, optimal sizing of the wind farm and battery devices is determined based on a surrogate function optimization. Meanwhile, a multi-scale wind model consistent from seasonal to hourly is developed for the connection of the decision hierarchy across the scales. The results of the proposed integrated approach are compared to those of the daily independent 2SSP model through a case study and real wind data. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.</P>

CHMP5 controls bone turnover rates by dampening NF-κB activity in osteoclasts

        Greenblatt, Matthew B.,Park, Kwang Hwan,Oh, Hwanhee,Kim, Jung-Min,Shin, Dong Yeon,Lee, Jae Myun,Lee, Jin Woo,Singh, Anju,Lee, Ki-young,Hu, Dorothy,Xiao, Changchun,Charles, Julia F.,Penninger, Josef M. The Rockefeller University Press 2015 The Journal of experimental medicine Vol.212 No.8

<▼1><P>Greenblatt et al. show that deletion of CHMP5 in osteoclasts leads to increased bone resorption coupled with exuberant osteoblast activity, resembling an early onset form of human Paget’s Disease of Bone</P></▼1><▼2><P>Physiological bone remodeling requires that bone formation by osteoblasts be tightly coupled to bone resorption by osteoclasts. However, relatively little is understood about how this coupling is regulated. Here, we demonstrate that modulation of NF-κB signaling in osteoclasts via a novel activity of charged multivesicular body protein 5 (CHMP5) is a key determinant of systemic rates of bone turnover. A conditional deletion of CHMP5 in osteoclasts leads to increased bone resorption by osteoclasts coupled with exuberant bone formation by osteoblasts, resembling an early onset, polyostotic form of human Paget’s disease of bone (PDB). These phenotypes are reversed by haploinsufficiency for <I>Rank</I>, as well as by antiresorptive treatments, including alendronate, zolendronate, and OPG-Fc. Accordingly, CHMP5-deficient osteoclasts display increased RANKL-induced NF-κB activation and osteoclast differentiation. Biochemical analysis demonstrated that CHMP5 cooperates with the PDB genetic risk factor valosin-containing protein (VCP/p97) to stabilize the inhibitor of NF-κBα (IκBα), down-regulating ubiquitination of IκBα via the deubiquitinating enzyme USP15. Thus, CHMP5 tunes NF-κB signaling downstream of RANK in osteoclasts to dampen osteoclast differentiation, osteoblast coupling and bone turnover rates, and disruption of CHMP5 activity results in a PDB-like skeletal disorder.</P></▼2>

      • ToF-SIMS Analysis of Adsorbed Proteins: Principal Component Analysis of the Primary Ion Species Effect on the Protein Fragmentation Patterns

        Muramoto, Shin,Graham, Daniel J.,Wagner, Matthew S.,Lee, Tae Geol,Moon, Dae Won,Castner, David G. American Chemical Society 2011 JOURNAL OF PHYSICAL CHEMISTRY C - Vol.115 No.49

<P>In time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS), the choice of the primary ion used for analysis can influence the resulting mass spectrum. This is because different primary ion types can produce different fragmentation pathways. In this study, analysis of single-component protein monolayers were performed using monatomic, triatomic, and polyatomic primary ion sources. Eight primary ions (Cs+, Au+, Au3+, Bi+, Bi3+, Bi3++, C60+, and C60++) were used to examine the low mass (<I>m</I>/<I>z</I> < 200) fragmentation patterns from five different proteins (bovine serum albumin, bovine serum fibrinogen, bovine immunoglobulin G, and chicken egg white lysozyme) adsorbed onto mica surfaces. Principal component analysis (PCA) processing of the ToF-SIMS data showed that variation in peak intensity caused by the primary ions was greater than differences in protein composition. The spectra generated by Cs+, Au+, and Bi+ primary ions were similar, but the spectra generated by monatomic, triatomic, and polyatomic primary ions varied significantly. C60 primary ions increased fragmentation of the adsorbed proteins in the <I>m</I>/<I>z</I> < 200 region, resulting in more intense low <I>m</I>/<I>z</I> peaks. Thus, comparison of data obtained by one primary ion species with that obtained by another primary ion species should be done with caution. However, for the spectra generated using a given primary ion beam, discrimination between the spectra of different proteins followed similar trends. Therefore, a PCA model of proteins created with a given ion source should only be applied to data sets obtained using the same ion source. The type of information obtained from PCA depended on the peak set used. When only amino acid peaks were used, PCA was able to identify the relationship between proteins by their amino acid composition. When all peaks from <I>m</I>/<I>z</I> 12–200 were used, PCA separated proteins based on a ratio of C4H8N+ to K+ peak intensities. This ratio correlated with the thickness of the protein films, and Bi1+ primary ions produced the most surface sensitive spectra.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/jpccck/2011/jpccck.2011.115.issue-49/jp208035x/production/images/medium/jp-2011-08035x_0002.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/jp208035x'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>
