‘유표성’을 통한 음악에서의 의미 고찰 -베토벤 피아노 소나타 Op. 111의 1악장을 중심으로-

This paper looks into the meaning and interpretation behind music through the basis of ‘markedness’ theory by Robert Hatten. Hatten's markedness originates from linguistic studies, and is obtained through conflict. Among two notions that exhibit a conflicting relationship, the one concept that shows a particular meaning is considered ‘marked.’ Similarly, markedness in music is produced through such opposing values, and through this, one can find the particular meaning in the a piece of music. Furthermore, it elicits a discourse which ultimately is an interpretation of the music. As a matter of fact, Hatten's musical interpretation is exhaustively based through a hermeneutic approach and does not utilize the Schenkerian theory. However, even though Hatten's theory focuses mostly on the extroversive analysis, it's difficult to explain without introversive analysis. Hatten, in his works, mentions that Shenker's Theory explicitly shows the voice leading principle. As such, Hatten's theory stands out on the musical surface, specifically the foreground, but because it discusses the importance of structure and function of tonality instead of overlooking them, this paper will suggest strategic markedness at multiple structural level including the foreground by utilizing Schenkerian sketches. This is expected to be valuable in drawing the meaning of nonstructural pitches and showing a structural analysis of the music. 본 연구는 음악 의미와 해석에 관한 것으로 해튼의 ‘유표성’ 이론에 기초한다. 해튼의 유표성은 언어학에서 기원한 것으로 ‘유표적’이란, 대립관계의 두 가지 개념 중 특정한 의미를 띄는 하나의 개념을 일컫는다. 음악에서의 유표성 또한 이 같은 대립의 가치에 의해 생성되는 것으로 이를 통해 음악작품에서도 특정 의미를 발견하고 좀 더 나아가 음악의 해석 즉, 담론을 이끌어낸다. 사실상 해튼의 음악분석은 철저히 해석학적 접근에 기초한 것으로 쉔커의 분석체계를 사용하지는 않는다. 그러나 음악 외적 의미에 집중하는 해튼의 이론일지라도 음악의 내적 분석과 따로 떼어 설명하기란 어렵다. 해튼은 저서에서 쉔커 이론이 성부진행 원칙을 분명하게 드러낸다는 점을 언급하였는데, 해튼 이론이 음악 표면 즉, 전경층에서 많이 부각되고 있지만 조성의 구조와 기능을 간과하기 보다는 오히려 그것들의 중요성을 논한다는 점에서, 본 연구는 쉔커식 분석방법을 활용하여 전경층을 비롯한 다양한 층위에서 전략적 유표성을 제시할 것이며, 이는 비구조적 음고들의 의미 도출과 조성의 구조적 기능 해석에 유용할 것으로 생각된다.

베토벤 《피아노 소나타 Op. 101》에 대한 기호학적 해석 또는 탐정 보고서

Beethoven Piano Sonata Op. 101 was written in 1816 and it is considered as the first sonata of his late style. This work is much deviated from conventional sonata writing, as exemplified by the intimidate and condensed form of first movement, unexpected returning of the first movement’s thema at the finale as well as the interpolated fugato in the development of the finale. Consequently, normal mode of the analysis is not sufficient to grasp the whole richness of this work. In this paper I try to interpret the work with the aids of 3 distinct scholars (or detectives). It has done by a new strategy, namely semiotic approach, expecting to broaden the scope of the analysis as well as bringing an expressive reading of this music. It can be summarized as having three main issues as the pastoral character, Fantasie-like form and the improviser’s own voice. Finally, these features are overall examined with details. 본 글은 베토벤 《피아노 소나타 Op. 101》의 해석을 통해 베토벤 후기의 작품양식 경향과 그 배경에 놓인 작곡가의 창작 상태를 이해하고자 하는 목적으로 쓰였다. 이 곡은 베토벤의 창작이 잠시 위축되었던 1816년 작곡된 곡으로 그의 피아노 소나타들 가운데서 후기 양식을 여는 첫 작품이 된다는 점에서 연구의 가치가 있다. 형식적인 면에서 기존의 소나타 관습에서 많이 벗어나 있는 이 작품의 의미를 이해하기 위해서는 전통적 방식의 분석의 틀에 의해서보다는 작곡가의 내면적 이해와 그것을 음악에 담는 방식을 탐구하는 연구가 병행되어야 할 것이다. 본 글에서는 이러한 의도로 기호학적 접근 방식을 취하여 작품의 곳곳에 숨겨져 있는 표현적 단서들을 포착하고 그것을 해명하고자 하였다. 음악 기호에 대한 이해는 서양 음악 문화에 대한 깊은 지식을 요하므로 베토벤 그리고 기호학 전문가들(탐정)의 해석을 빌어 왔고 이를 토대로 작품의 의미를 재구성해 보았다. 여기에서 드러나는 3가지 키워드는 이 소나타의 전원적 성격, 환상곡적 성격, 그리고 즉흥연주자로서의 베토벤의 목소리로 요약할 수 있다. 종합 검토에서는 이들 각각의 성격에 대한 타당성이 검토되었다.

‘베토벤적인 것’에 대한 두 가지 담론 - 베토벤 피아노 소나타 Op. 81a ≪고별≫ 제1악장을 중심으로-

The paper consists of two distinct analyses on a single piece, first movement of Beethoven's Piano Sonata Op. 81a, Lebewohl. The first analytic narrative as extroversive semiosis identifies musical topics latent in multiple levels of music and then explores their meanings by espousing Leonard Ratner's and Kofi Agawu's stylistic and semiotic research. The narrative develops into a hermeneutic essay, in which thorough and delicate examinations on diverse musical aspects are integrated and synthesized towards a hermeneutic discourse. The Lebewohl motto and the chaconne 4-line representing nostalgic emotion and lament respectively serve as a solid foundation towards a complex music drama, in which they are synthesized with other musical signifiers, such as French overture, singing allegro, brilliant style, etc. The second narrative marks an introversive approach to the deep middleground structure. Beethoven's unique ways of handling a sonata form through a neighboring motive are discussed with Schenkerian graphs of the slow introduction, exposition, and development. The tripartite division that leads to a new construction of the sonata form has been discussed. Finally, the two distinct discourses are combined and assessed for a contemplation of truly 'Beethovenians'. 본 논문은 베토벤 피아노 소나타 Op. 81a ≪고별≫(Lebewohl) 제1악장에 대한 두 가지 내러티브를 담고 있다. 첫 번째 내러티브는 외적인 분석으로서 음악의 여러 층위에 배태(胚胎)된 토픽들을확인하고 그 의미를 탐구한다. 이를 위해 래트너(Leonard Ratner)와 아가우(Kofi Agawu)의 양식적·기호학적 연구를 출발점으로 삼았다. 이러한 내러티브는 다양한 음악적 측면들에 대한 철저하고도 섬세한 고찰들이 연합된 ‘해석학적인 담론’으로 발전하게 된다. 벗을 향한 향수를 상징하는 ‘고별’의 모토와 슬픔의 표상(表象)인 ‘샤콘느 4도선’은 이 작품이 내포하는 복잡한 음악극의 근간을 이룬다. 이 음악극에서 고별 모토와 샤콘느 4도선은 프랑스 서곡, 노래하는 알레그로, 화려한 양식 등과 같은 음악적 기표들과 연합되어 다층적 의미를 생산한다. 두 번째 내러티브는 중경층에 대한 내적인 분석으로서 거시적 수준의 보조음 음형을 작품의 응집력을 확보하기 위한 수단으로 사용한 베토벤의 소나타 형식의 취급 방법에 대해 논의한다. 소나타 형식을 새로운 차원의 삼분할로 보는 견해가 조심스럽게 개진되며, 결론에서는 이 두 내러티브분석의 융합과 평가를 통해 진정한 의미의 ‘베토벤적인 것’에 대한 숙고가 이루어진다.
