        Repellent efficacy of essential oils and plant extracts against Tribolium castaneum and Plodia interpunctella

        This study was conducted to investigate the repellent efficacy of essential oils (Origanum vulgare, Pimpinella anisum, and Tanacetum cinerariifolium) and four plant extracts (Agastache rugosa, Capsicum annuum, Citrus reticulata, and Ginkgo biloba) against Tribolium castaneum (adults and larvae) and Plodia interpunctella (larvae). Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry analysis revealed the presence of carvacrol, anethole, and jasmolin I as the predominant constituent in O. vulgare, P. anisum, and T. cinerariifolium, respectively. Furthermore, ethyl hexopyranoside, 9,12‐octadecadienoic acid, cyclopentanol, and 2‐cresol were identified in A. rugosa, C. annuum, C. reticulata, and G. biloba, respectively. The repellent efficacy of each essential oil, plant extract, and the combination of oils was evaluated using a specially designed cylinder trap for 120 h. Among the three oils, O. vulgare and T. cinerariifolium had greatest repellent efficacy against P. interpunctella larvae. T. cinerariifolium exhibited effective repellence against the adults and larvae of T. castaneum. Therefore, O. vulgare (O) and T. cinerariifolium (T) were selected for further investigation of combined effects. Two essential oils were mixed in three different ratios of OT1 (1:3), OT2 (1:1), and OT3 (3:1). The repellent efficacies of OT1 and OT2 against the adults of T. castaneum were significantly greater than that of OT3. OT1 was effective against the larvae of T. castaneum, whereas OT2 was effective against the larvae of P. interpunctella. OT1 enhanced the repellent efficacy by approximately five times against larvae of T. castaneum, compared with that of T. cinerariifolium. Overall, OT1 was selected as the best repellent substance against all the tested insects.

        Evaluation of Insecticidal Ingredients and Efficacy of Extracts from Pyrethrum Flowers Cultivated in South Korea

        세계적으로 친환경 해충 방제를 위해 식물 추출물을 사용하는 연구가 화학농약에 대한 의존도를 줄이기 위해 진행되고 있다. 제충국 식물은 살충제용 피레트린의 원료로 널리 알려져 있지만, 한국에서 재배된 식물의 추출물과 효능에 대한 연구는 제한적이다. 본 연구는 한국에서 재배된 본 연구는 한국에서 재배된 두 가지 제충국 품종에서 피레트린을 추출하는 방법을 비교하였다. 또한, 분리된 피레트린 함유 추출물의 주요 식물 해충 에 대한 효능을 조사하였다. 피레트린 함량은 프랑스에서 수입한 '계통' 품종에 비해 '달마시안' 품종에서 통계적으로 유의하게 높았다. 따라서, 달마 시안 품종의 피레트린 추출물을 이용하여 본 연구에 사용하였다. 추출된 피레트린의 양은 추출에 사용된 에탄올 농도가 증가함에 따라 증가하였으 며, 95% 에탄올을 사용했을 때 가장 높은 수준(6,064 ppm/100 g 꽃 건물중)이었다. 총 피레트린 함량과 피레트린 I/II 비율은 만개기에 수확한 꽃 에서 가장 높았다. 추출물의 in vitro 생물검정에서 복숭아혹진딧물의 LC50 값은 34 ppm, 배추좀나방 유충은 69 ppm, 뿌리혹선충 유충은 0.1 ppm이었다. 이러한 결과는 한국에서 재배된 달마시안 꽃의 에탄올 추출물이 식물 해충 방제를 위한 천연 살충제 개발에 유용할 수 있음을 나타냈 다. 본 연구는 한국에서 재배된 T. cinerariifolium var. 달마시안 꽃 추출물이 국내에서 식물 해충을 효과적이고 친환경적으로 방제하는 데 잠재력이 있음을 보였다. Research on using plant extracts for eco-friendly pest control is being conducted worldwide to reduce reliance on chemical products. While pyrethrum plants are widely recognized as a source of pyrethrin for insecticides, studies focusing on the extraction and efficacy of products from Korean-grown plants remain limited. This study compared methods to extract pyrethrins from two pyrethrum varieties grown in Korea. Furthermore, it examined the efficacy of the isolated pyrethrin-containing extracts against three plant pests. Pyrethrin contents were significantly higher in pyrethrin preparations from Tanacetum cinerariifolium var. Dalmatian compared to a French-imported cultivar, Gyetong. Therefore, pyrethrin extracts from the Dalmatian variety were used for further studies. The amount of pyrethrins extracted increased with the ethanol concentration used for extraction, reaching the highest level (6,064 ppm/100 g dry flower mass) with 95% ethanol. Total pyrethrin content and the pyrethrin I/II ratio were highest in flowers harvested at full bloom. In vitro bioassays of the extract showed LC50 values of 34 ppm for green peach aphids, 69 ppm for cabbage diamondback moth larvae, and notably, 0.1 ppm for juveniles of the root-knot nematode. These findings indicate that the ethanol extract from Dalmatian flowers grown in Korea could serve as a valuable alternative for developing botanical pesticides. These results suggest the potential of extracts from Korean-grown T. cinerariifolium var. Dalmatian flowers in providing effective and eco-friendly control of plant pests in local agriculture.

        천연 피레트린을 이용한 긴수염버섯파리 연막 방제

        Lycoriella ingenua causes severe damage to the artificial sawdust beds used to cultivate mushroom, and reduce the production of button mushroom, Agaricus bisporus, in greenhouses. However, the chemical insecticides is difficult to control because of pesticides residue, pesticide resistance and many side effects. We sprayed pyrethrin from Tanacetum cinerariifolium with a heating mist fogger system for the environment-friendly natural insecticide development which can replace chemical insecticides. As a result, the fatality and knock-down phenomenon of dark-winged fungus gnats tend to increase as the concentration of the extract increases gradually. Control (only water) had a fatality rate of 0%, 25 fold (132 ppm) showed the fatality rate increased by about 46% compared with the control. Pyrethrum extract (3300 ppm) and 3 fold (1100 ppm) had 100% fatality rates, all the flies died.
