        Ribosomally Synthesiszed Antimicrobial Peptides (Bacteriocins) in Lactic Acid Bacteria

        Bacteriocins in Gram-positive bacteria have attracted much attention because many have a strong antimicrobial activity also against bacteria outside the genera of the producers. Lantibiotics and the pediocin-like bactericins have attracted most attention since they kill a broad spectrum of Gram-positive bacteria including important pathogens. But many other promising Gram-positive bacteriocins have been thoroughly characterized. Recent studies have shown that bacteriocins may play a role in the intestinal flora to protect us against the food-borne pathogens. Bacterial genome sequencing has demonstrated that there may be an arsenal of such compounds and we are only seeing the top of the iceberg. The present review gives a short outlook of the field of bacteriocins with focus on lactic acid bacteria and includes recent findings.

        Characterization of Isolated Lactobacillus spp. And classification by RAPD-PCR Analysis

        The genetic relationship of six Lactobacillus strains and five laboratory isolated form fermented milk were determined by a random amplified polymorphic DNA(RAPD)-Polymease chan reaction (PCR) method. With 42 random primers. the result were analyzed by using the NTSYS-PC software for phenetic analysis. it revealed that all tested bacteria were divided into three distinct clusters. The clusters implied three subgenuses existed for the genus Lactobacillus, which were previously proposed by Rogosa and Sharpe. From the results, it was also possible to determine that the isolated Lactobacillus strains from fermented milk were grouped into L. acidophilus or L. bulgaricus. Interestingly. the three tested L. casei strains were divided into different clusters implying different subgenuses, i.e., Thermobacterium (L. casei YIT 9018) and Streptobacterium(L. casei CHR. Hansen and L.casei ATCC 4646). According to the distance matrix generated by an UPGMA program, the isolated bacteria LT01 and LT02 were determined as a subspecies of L. bulgaricus. The HK01, HK02 and HK03 were very closely related to either L. acidophilus or L. case YIT 9018. Hence, RAPD-PCR appears to be a very practical method to determine the genetic relationships of the Lactobacillus species and to characterize the unknown Lactobacillus strains at the subspecies level.

      • Support Vector Machine Optimization Based On Magnetic Bacteria Optimization Algorithm

        Classification performance of support vector machine (SVM) will be influenced by its model parameters. For this problem, a new method named magnetic bacteria optimization algorithm (MBOA) that optimizes the parameters of SVM is proposed. It is tested by the UCI standard data sets and compared with the other optimization algorithms, such as particle swarm optimization (PSO). Experimental results show that the MBOA can optimize the parameters of SVM well and has better performance than the compared algorithms.

        Fecal Metabolic Activities of Herbal Components to Bioactive Compounds

        The herbal components should be transformed to bioactive compounds by the intestinal bacteria and then expressed the pharmacological action of herbal medicines. Human fecal enzyme activities related to the metabolism of herbal components were measured. The metabolic activities of puerarin, poncirin, glycyrrhizin, ginsenoside Rb1 and ginsenoside Rb2 to their bioactive compounds were $3.5{\pm}1.18,{\;}333.1{\pm}183.64,{\;}95.7{\pm}107.1,{\;}20.8{\pm}10.32{\;}and{\;}20.8{\pm}13.3{\;}{\mu}mo1/h/g$, respectively. The profile of these metabolic activities of glycyrrhizin and ginsenosides were not changed even if herbal extracts, water extract of Glycyrrhizae Radix and Ginseng Radix, instead of the isolated compounds were used . All the enzyme activities tested were not different between male and female, and between ages. However, the difference of these enzyme activities in individuals was significant. These results suggest that the metabolic activity of herbal components to bioactive compounds may be a factor of constitutional classification, and could be available for constitutional classifications, if the constitutional herbal medicines were used .

      • 식물병원세균의 최근 분류

        식물병원 원핵생물은 1967년까지 6개 속(屬)이 알려져 있었다 그러나 Corynebacterium에 속하던 세균들이 5개의 새로운 속으로 나뉘어지고, Erwinia에 속하던 세균들이 4개의 속으로 나뉘어졌다. Pseudomonas에 속하던 세균들과 Xanthomonas에 속하던 세균들도 각 각 5 개 속과 2 개의 속으로 나뉘어졌다. 또한 이제까지 식물에 병을 일으키지 않는 것으로 알려졌던 세균들 중, 5 개 속의 세균들이 식물에 병을 일으키는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 여기에 식물병원세균을 포함하는 비롯한 5 개의 속이 새로 신설되어, 이제 32 개의 속이 식물병원 원핵생물로 기록되게 되었다. 그러나 아직도 유관속국재세균을 비롯하여 많은 식물병원 원핵생물들의 학명이 부여되지 않은 채 남아있기 때문에, 식물병원세균의 속은 더 늘어날 전망이다. Untill 1967, only six genera of plant pathogenic bacteria become generally known. But, the number of genera has been increased by subdivision from the previous genera or by newly establishment. Five new genera was derived from genus Corynebacterium, three new genera from genus Erwinia, four new genera from genus Pseudomonas and one genus from genus Xanthomonas. In addition, ten genera were newly established after 1967, where five of them had not been recorded as plant pathogens. As the result, the thirty two genera are involved in plant pathogenic prokaryotes. However, phytopathogenic prokaryotes would be increased in number of genus because fastidious vascular bacteria do not get their scientific name yet.

        세균 분류학의 기본 개념들

        분류학의 세 구성 요소는 분류(classification), 명명법(nomenclature) 및 동정(identification)이다. 전통적으로 세균의 분류와동정은 세균의 형태학적, 생화학적 데이터에 근거를 두어 시행되었다. 소위 자연적 개념이라고 불리는 새 이론에서는세균들간의 관계를 표현형적, 유전형적인 특성 둘 다의 전체적인 유사성에 근거를 두어 기술한다. 현대의 분류학인 다상적 분류학(polyphasic taxonomy)은 유전형적, 표현형적, 계통발생학적인 정보들을 모두 통합하여 공감되는 형태의 일반적목적의 분류를 하는 것이다. 생화학적 검사에 근거를 둔 일상적인 동정법이 실패하면 전체 16s rRNA 유전자 염기서열분석과 같은 대체동정법이 필요하다. 비록 16s rRNA 유전자 염기서열 분석법이 밀접하게 관련된 균종을 감별할 수 있을만큼 변별력이 충분하지 못할 경우가 가끔 있지만 그 결과는 그러한 균종 동정에 필요한 추가 분석법에 대해 제시를해줄 수도 있을 것이다.
