The present study investigated the relationship between the social problem solving ability of children and the language patterns of their mothers. The subjects included 193 nine yearolds (185 girls, 108 boys), and 230 twelve yearolds (115 girls, 115 boys). The instruments used were a language patterns test for the mother and IPA (Interpersonal Problem Solving Ability Test) for children. Major finding from this study were: ⑴ the correlation between the social problem solving ability of children and the language patterns of their mothers was not statistically significant, ⑵ the language patterns of the mothers were significantly different by child's sex; for boys, mother used more ordered language patterns and for girls, mothers used more ordered language patterns and for girls, mothers used more humanoriented language patterns, ⑶ the social problem solving ability of children were significantly different by child's age; 12yearolds exhibited higher ability than 9yearolds.

Crohn`s disease (CD) may involve any part of the gastrointestinal tract, from the mouth to the anus. Approximately >90% of cases occur in the small bowel and colon. Upper gastrointestinal involvement, especially duodenal manifestation, is relatively rare. Therefore, adequate medical treatment for duodenal CD has not yet been established. We report a case of CD with duodenal involvement. A 46-year-old man with Crohn`s ileocolitis presented to our hospital with right upper quadrant pain. An endoscopy showed a deep excavated ulcer with deformity at the duodenal bulb, and he was initially treated with azathioprine (1 mg/kg), Pentasa (3.0 g/day), and a proton pump inhibitor for 1 year. However, the deep ulcer did not heal. Therefore, infliximab infusion therapy was initiated, and the duodenal lesion completely resolved on follow-up esophagogastroduodenoscopy. We report a case of duodenal CD that completely resolved following infliximab infusion, with a review of the literature. (Intest Res 2014;12:66-69)

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>In the present study, we investigated whether celecoxib could induce the expression of NKG2D ligands in clonogenic colon cancer cells, and increase their susceptibility to NK cell-mediated cell death. Celecoxib and its non-coxib analog, 2,5-dimethyl celecoxib, induced ULBP-1 and DR5 in both COX-2 negative HCT-15 cells and COX-2 positive HT-29 cells. Celecoxib increased their susceptibility to NK92 cells in both DELFIA assay and soft agar colony forming assay. The inducibility of ULBP-1 and DR5 by celecoxib was not different between CD44- and CD44+ HCT-15 cells, and CD133- and CD133+ HT-29 cells. Celecoxib increased the susceptibility of highly clonogenic CD44+ HCT-15 and CD133+ HT-29 cells to NK92 cells, at least comparable to less clonogenic CD44- HCT-15 and CD133- HT-29 cells, respectively. In addition, celecoxib induced CHOP, and thapsigargin, an inducer of ER (endoplasmic reticulum) stress, induced DR5 but not ULBP1 in HCT-15. Taken together, these findings suggest that celecoxib induces the expression of ULBP-1 as well as DR5 in clonogenic colon cancer cells via COX-2 and ER stress-independent pathways, and increases their susceptibility to NK cells.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Celecoxib induced ULBP-1 and DR5 in both HCT-15 cells and HT-29 cells, and subsequently increased their susceptibility to NK92 cells. </LI> <LI> Celecoxib increased the susceptibility of highly clonogenic CD44+ HCT-15 and CD133+ HT-29 cells to NK92 cells. </LI> <LI> 2,5-Dimethyl celecoxib also induced ULBP-1 and DR5 in both HTC-15 and HT-29 cells similarly with celecoxib. </LI> <LI> Treatment of HCT-15 cells with thapsigargin, an inducer of ER (endoplasmic reticulum) stress, induced DR5, but not ULBP-1. </LI> </UL> </P>

<P>We investigated the effect of adsorption of specific molecules on undoped zinc tin oxide (ZTO) and zirconium (Zr)-doped zinc tin oxide (ZZTO) thin-film transistors (TFTs) using a solution process. The specific chemisorbed species on the back channel region produced unstable ZTO TFT electrical properties under a bias stress test. However, the amount of specific chemisorbed ZTO TFT species could be controlled by Zr doping. As a result, the threshold voltage shift of the ZZTO TFT was dramatically improved comparing the ZTO TFT under positive bias stress.</P>

<P>Abstract</P><P>Background and Aim: </P><P>Stem cell transplantation offers potential gene therapy for brain tumors. However, this approach has received little attention as a treatment for gastrointestinal tumors. In the present study, we explored the possibility of human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hMSC) producing cytosine deaminase (CD), followed by systemic 5-fluorocytosine (5-FC) administration, showing an antitumor effect on a mouse gastric cancer xenograft.</P><P>Methods: </P><P>We first explored the ability of hMSC, coated with fluorescent dye, to migrate to human gastric cancer MKN45 cells <I>in vitro</I> and <I>in vivo</I>. We then used hMSC in which a gene expressed the prodrug-activating enzyme CD, which can convert the prodrug 5-FC into the cytotoxic agent 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), and further investigated the potential of these cells to deliver the CD gene and to reduce tumor growth in nude mice. The migratory capacity of hMSC was confirmed by an <I>in vitro</I> migration assay, as well as in an <I>in vivo</I> model of nude mice bearing subcutaneous tumors of MKN45 cells when hMSC were injected.</P><P>Results: </P><P>The migration ability of hMSC towards MKN45 cells was confirmed by migration assay. Effective conversion of 5-FC to 5-FU by hMSC transfected with the CD gene (CD-hMSC) showed therapeutic anticancer potential in a MKN45 cell co-culture system, as confirmed by thin layer chromatography. Nude mice bearing MKN45 tumors were intravenously injected with CD-hMSC, followed by systemic 5-FC treatment (500 mg/kg/day) for 7 days. Tumor volumes and weights of mice injected with CD-hMSC decreased significantly after treatment with 5-FC. However, the 5-FC-treated group without CD-hMSC injection showed neither a decrease in tumor volume nor bodyweight loss.</P><P>Conclusion: </P><P>The CD-hMSC system showed anticancer therapeutic potential, and minimized the side-effects of 5-FU.</P>

Lipoteichoic acid (LTA) is a major component of the cell wall of Gram-positive bacteria. Its effects on living organisms are different from those of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) found in Gram-negative bacteria. LTA contributes to immune regulatory effects including anti-aging. In this study, we showed that LTA isolated from Lactobacillus plantarum (pLTA) inhibited melanogenesis in B16F10 mouse melanoma cells. pLTA reduced the cellular activity of tyrosinase and the expression of tyrosinase family members in a dose-dependent manner. The expression of microphthalmia- associated transcription factor (MITF), a key factor in the synthesis of melanin, was also decreased by pLTA. Further, we showed that pLTA activated melanogenesis signaling, such as extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) and phosphatidylinositol 3-kinse (PI3K)/AKT. In addition, the expression of heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein A1 (hnRNP A1) and HuR, which are important RNA-binding proteins (RBPs), was reduced. pLTA likely degrades MITF via regulation of melanogenic signaling and RNA stability of melanogenic proteins, resulting in the reduction of melanin. Thus, our data suggest that pLTA has therapeutic potential for treating hyperpigmentation disorders and can also be used as a cosmetic whitening agent.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>We fabricated thin-film transistors (TFTs) with a Zr-doped zinc tin oxide (ZZTO) channel layer by the sol–gel process. To obtain optimal process conditions, ZZTO TFT was fabricated as a function of annealing temperatures. The performance of the ZZTO TFTs fabricated at annealing temperatures lower than 500 °C, was poor. This could be attributed to the insufficient energy available for M-OH dehydroxylation and condensation of multi-component oxides. The linear mobility, subthreshold gate swing (<I>S.S</I>), threshold voltage, and on-to-off current ratio of the ZZTO TFT annealed at 500 °C were 4.02 cm<SUP>2</SUP> V<SUP>−1</SUP> s<SUP>−1</SUP>, 0.94 V/decade, 3.13 V, and >10<SUP>6</SUP>, respectively.</P>

<P>Thin-film transistors (TFTs) with multistacked active layers (MSALs) have been studied to improve their electrical performance. The performance enhancement with MSALs has been attributed to higher film density in the effective channel; the density was higher because the porosities of the sublayers were reduced by filling with solution. The proposed TFT with MSALs exhibited an enhanced field-effect mobility of 2.17 cm<SUP>2</SUP>/(V s) and a threshold voltage shift under positive bias stress of 8.2 V, compared to 1.21 cm<SUP>2</SUP>/(V s) and 18.1 V, respectively, for the single active layer TFT.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/aamick/2012/aamick.2012.4.issue-8/am3008278/production/images/medium/am-2012-008278_0007.gif'></P>

We demonstrate novel soft-lithographic techniques for preparing patterned liquid crystal (LC) orientations at an alignment layer. By controlling patterning conditions such as wetting property and operating temperature depending on polymeric materials, multi-directional or modified LC alignment conditions can be simply achieved.
