Three-Dimensional Structure in Bach's Music

From the fact that Bach repeatedly changed the cyclical order of movements in a large scale works, it is evident that the structure was very important to him. In this respect Bach's music analyzed in simple schemes cannot show its multi-farious complexity. Analyzing Bach's art in the three-dimensional ways only can help understanding his structure perfectly. Bach's large scale works such as Invention and Sinfonia, B minor Mass, Passacaglia, Cantata Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit, Johann Passion, Goldberg Variation were examined in this paper to prove their three-dimensional structure.
Zinc Oxide Particles Connected by Nano-Sheets and their Heat Treatment

Particulate films of crystalline ZnO connected by nano-sheets were fabricated in an aqueous solution. This study focused on the annealing behavior of the particulate films, especially the morphology change of the nano-sheets. The nano-sheets had a thickness of 10 nm to 50 nm and width of 1 μm to 10 μm. They were connected to particles closely with no clearance. Their morphology was changed to nanoparticles and porous particulate films of crystalline ZnO by annealing at 500℃ for 1 h in air. The morphology of the sheets changed due to their slimness and/or phase transformation. Crystallization and morphology control of crystalline ZnO at low temperature can be applied to a wide variety of devices supported by low-heat resistant polymer films and would contribute to the environmentally friendly fabrication of oxide devices.
Composite Strips with Various Anchor Systems for Retrofitting Concrete Beams

This paper presents the performance of anchor systems for reinforced concrete beams retrofitted with carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) strips. Nine simply-supported beams are tested with various anchor systems such as steel hooks, steel plates with anchor bolts, CFRP anchor plates, and near-surface mounted (NSM) CFRP strip. The effects of these anchors on the behavior of the retrofitted beams are discussed, including load-carrying capacity, failure modes, and ductility characteristics. Test results indicate that end-anchorage is an important parameter when a CFRP-retrofit design is conducted. Mechanical bolts and NSM CRFP anchors are recommended.

l-theanine (γ-glutamylethylamide), an amino acid in green tea, has been shown to affect brain functions by relieving stress disorders, improving mood, and maintaining normal sleep. However, the cognitive functions for which theanine is effective are unclear. This study aimed to clarify which cognitive functions are positively affected by intake of l-theanine. A double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study was conducted. The subjects were Japanese men and women aged 50–69 years. Mini Mental State Examination-Japanese version score was 24 or higher. Cognitrax was used as a test battery for cognitive function. Evaluations were performed before the intervention, after a single dose of l-theanine, and after 12 weeks of regular intake. The single dose of l-theanine reduced the reaction time to attention tasks (Stroop test, Part 1), and it increased the number of correct answers and decreased the number of omission errors in working memory tasks (4-Part continuous performance test, Part 4). In conclusion, our study indicated that l-theanine may contribute to improving attention, thus enhancing working memory and executive functions. Clinical Trial No.: UMIN000033812.

Exfoliation of layers in NaxCoO2.

<P>We proposed and developed an exfoliation process for layer-structured NaxCoO2 to prepare CoO nanosheets. Na+ ion exchange by acid treatment was utilized to expand the spacing between the two CoO2 layers in NaxCoO2. Ethylamine was then effectively utilized for the exfoliation of cobalt oxide sheets having nanometer-order thickness and high aspect ratio. CoO nanosheets were observed by TEM micrographs and electron diffraction patterns after drying. Further efforts are needed for the application of exfoliated sheets to an integration process to fabricate self-assembled nanomaterials such as desired layer structures composed of two (or more) kinds of nanosheets.</P>
