High-speed melt spinning of syndiotactic polystyrene was carried out using high and low molecular weight polymers, HM s-PS and LM s-PS, at the throughput rates of 3 and 6 g/min. The effect of take-up velocity on the structure and properties of as-spun fibers was investigated. Wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) patterns of the as-spun fibers revealed that the orientation-induced crystallization started to occur at the take-up velocities of 2-3 km/min. The crystal modification was a-form. Birefringence of as-spun fibers showed negative value, and the absolute value of birefringence increased with an increase in the take-up velocity. The cold crystallization temperature analyzed through the differential scanning calorimetry (OSC) decreased with an increase in the take-up velocity in the low speed region, whereas as the melting temperature increased after the on-set of orientation-induced crystallization. It was found that the fiber structure development proceeded from lower take-up velocities when the spinning conditions of higher molecular weight and lower throughput rate were adopted. The highest tensile modulus of 6.5 GPa was obtained for the fibers prepared at the spinning conditions of LM s-PS, 6 g/min and 5 km/min, whereas the highest tensile strength of 160 MPa was obtained for the HM s-PS fibers at the take-up velocity of 2 km/min. Elongation at break of as-spun fibers showed an abrupt increase, which was regarded as the brittle-ductile transition, in the low speed region, and subsequently decreased with an increase in the take-up velocity. There was a universal relation between the thermal and mechanical properties of as-spun fibers and the birefringence of as-spun fibers when the fibers were still amorphous. The orientation-induced crystallization was found to start when the birefringence reached -0.02. After the starting of the orientation-induced crystallization, thermal and mechanical properties of as-spun fibers with similar level of birefringence varied significantly depending on the processing conditions.

<P>Angiopoietin-like protein (Angptl) 1 and Angptl2, which are considered orphan ligands, are highly homologous, particularly in the fibrinogen-like domain containing the putative receptor binding site. This similarity suggests potentially cooperative functions between the two proteins. In this report, the function of Angptl1 and Angptl2 is analyzed by using morpholino antisense technology in zebrafish. Knockdown of both Angptl1 and Angptl2 produced severe vascular defects due to increased apoptosis of endothelial cells at the sprouting stage. In vitro studies showed that Angptl1 and Angptl2 have antiapoptotic activities through the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/Akt pathway, and coinjection of constitutively active Akt/protein kinase B mRNA rescued impaired vascular development seen in double knockdown embryos. These results provide a physiological demonstration of the cooperative interaction of Angptl1 and Angptl2 in endothelial cells through phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/Akt mediated antiapoptotic activities.</P>

4개월령 때의 예방접종을 위한 진찰에서 수축기잡음이 청취되었던 1세령의 암컷, 체중 3㎏의 치와와가 각종의 검사에서 중증의 판막상성(瓣上性)-판막성(瓣性)폐동맥협착증으로 진단되었다. 이 증례에 대하여 표면냉각단순저체온마취(表面冷却單純低體溫麻醉)에의한 심장박동 정지하(停止下)에서의 심장막 패치법(Patch method)으로 외과수술을 실시하여 교정에 성공하였다. 수술 후에는 X선 검사에 의하여 심흉격비율(心胸隔比)의 축소와 우심실압(右心室壓)의 저하가 인정되었다. In a one-year-old female Chihuahua, weighing 3㎏, which had shown a systolic murmur at the examination of vaccination at 4 months of age, we diagnosed several supravalvular and valvular pulmonic stenoses using various examinations. Our surgical treatment with the pericardial path-method under cardiac arrest succeeded using simple surface hypothermia. The treatment induced a reduction of the cardiothoracic ratio in radiographic examination and decline of right ventricle pressure after operation.
The Development of the Totalized Hydrogen Energy Utilization System for Commercial Buildings

We have proposed the Totalized Hydrogen Energy Utilization System(THEUS) for applying to commercial buildings. THEUS consists of fuel cells, water electrolyzers, metal hydride tanks and their auxiliaries. We evaluated the energy saving of the basic THEUS in view of an actual operation using thermal demand data of actual buildings. The THEUS have ability for achieving energy saving, in comparison with an ice storage system for cooling demand. We have developed the hydrogen storage system using metal hydride and unitized reversible cell (URC) combine the functionality of a fuel cell and an electrolyzer in a single device, these are important components of THEUS. The metal hydride tank designed and manufactured to evaluate that we assumed actual operation in the experiments. We developed the numerical simulation code, and simulation results are in good agreement with experimental data. The simulation about two tanks system was done by using this code. The heat utilization can be improved greatly. To achieve URC commercial use, improvement of durability was examined. It confirmed that our URC had durability for several thousand hours.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>RUNX genes belong to a three-membered family of transcription factors, which are well established as master regulators of development. Of them, aberrations in RUNX3 expression are frequently observed in human malignancies primarily due to epigenetic silencing, which is often overlooked. At the G1 phase of the cell cycle, RUNX3 regulates the restriction (R)-point, a mechanism that decides cell cycle entry. Deregulation at the R-point or loss of RUNX3 results in premature entry into S phase, leading to a proliferative advantage. Inactivation of Runx1 and Runx2 induce immortalization of mouse embryo fibroblast. As a consequence, RUNX loss induces pre-cancerous lesions independent of oncogene activation. p53 is the most extensively studied tumour suppressor. p53 plays an important role to prevent tumour progression but not tumour initiation. Therefore, upon oncogene activation, early inactivation of RUNX genes and subsequent mutation of p53 appear to result in tumour initiation and progression. Recently, transcription-independent DNA repairing roles of RUNX3 and p53 are emerging. Being evolutionarily old genes, it appears that the primordial function of p53 is to protect genome integrity, a function that likely extends to the RUNX gene as well. In this review, we examine the mechanism and sequence of actions of these tumour suppressors in detail.</P>
Dispersion-Flocculation Behavior of Fine Lead Particles in an Organic Solvent

<P>Methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) is a good solvent for polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and it has been proposed for use in PVC recycling. In the recycling process, fine particles of 3PbO·PbSO<SUB>4</SUB>·H<SUB>2</SUB>O, used as a thermal stabilizer in PVC products, are dispersed and not dissolved in the solvent. To establish methods for removing of 3PbO·PbSO<SUB>4</SUB>·H<SUB>2</SUB>O particles from the solvent, factors affecting the dispersion-flocculation behavior of the particles in MEK were investigated.The zeta potential and particle distribution of 3PbO·PbSO<SUB>4</SUB>·H<SUB>2</SUB>O particles in MEK solutions containing known amounts of H<SUB>2</SUB>O were measured. Above 5 vol%H<SUB>2</SUB>O in MEK solutions, the zeta potential of 3PbO·PbSO<SUB>4</SUB>·H<SUB>2</SUB>O particles approached zero and the flocculation of particles was achieved. In addition, it was found that Pb<SUP>2+</SUP> and Cl<SUP>−</SUP> affect the zeta potential of the particles. These results indicate that the dispersion-flocculation behavior of lead particles can be influenced by the concentration of H<SUB>2</SUB>O, Pb<SUP>2+</SUP>, and Cl<SUP>−</SUP> in MEK.</P>
The RUNX1 Enhancer Element eR1: A Versatile Marker for Adult Stem Cells

The identification of adult stem cells is challenging because of the heterogeneity and plasticity of stem cells in different organs. Within the same tissue, stem cells may be highly proliferative, or maintained in a quiescent state and only to be activated after tissue damage. Although various stem cell markers have been successfully identified, there is no universal stem cell marker, which is exclusively expressed in all stem cells. Here, we discuss the roles of master developmental regulator RUNX1 in stem cells and the development of a 270 base pair fragment of the Runx1 enhancer (eR1) for use as stem cell marker. Using eR1 to identify stem cells offers a distinct advantage over gene promoters, which might not be expressed exclusively in stem cells. Moreover, RUNX1 has been strongly implicated in various cancer types, such as leukemia, breast, esophageal, prostate, oral, skin, and ovarian cancers-it has been suggested that RUNX1 dysfunction promotes stem cell dysfunction and proliferation. As tissue stem cells are potential candidates for cancer cells-of-origin and cancer stem cells, we will also discuss the use of eR1 to target oncogenic gene manipulations in stem cells and to track subsequent neoplastic changes.
Causal relationship between the loss of RUNX3 expression and gastric cancer

The human runt-related gene RUNX3/PEBP2αC, located on chromosome 1p36, is a major mediator of signals elicited by members of the transforming growth factor-β(TGF-β) superfamily. Here we show that 45-60% of gastric cancer cell lines and surgically resected specimens do not significantly express RUNX3 due to a combination of hemizygous deletion and hypermethylation of the RUNX3 promoter region. Tumorigenicity of gastric cancer cell lines in nude mice was inversely related to their level of RUNX3 expression, and one gastric tumor associated mutation(R122C), occurring within the conserved Runt domain completely abolished the tumor suppressive effect of RUNX3. The results suggest that a lack of RUNX3 function is causally related to the genesis and progression of human gastric cancer.
