Rapid recovery of tissue hypoxia by cotransplantation of endothelial cells

Disruption of blood vessels caused by a spinal cord injury leads to tissue hypoxia. This hypoxic condition reduces the survival of transplanted stem cells, consequentially decreasing the effectiveness of stem cell therapy. In this study, we investigated the correlation between angiogenesis and the survival of transplanted neural stem cells in a spinal cord injury model. Hypoxia-specific luciferase-expressing neural stem cells (EpoSV-Luc NSC) were used as a tool for the detection of hypoxia caused by a spinal cord injury. In vivo, angiogenesis by cotransplantation of endothelial cells quickly recovered tissue hypoxia caused by a spinal cord injury. As a result, cotransplantation of endothelial cells improved the survival of neural stem cells transplanted into the injured spinal cord.
Physicochemical and Textural Properties of Noodles Prepared from Different Potato Varieties

This study was performed to investigate the quality characteristics of noodles made from four different potato varieties: Atlantic, Go-un, Sae-bong, Jin-sun, and wheat flour. Quality characteristics of five noodles were analyzed by general components analysis, cooking quality (rate of water absorption, cooking loss, and volume increase), and mechanical textural properties. Some variations existed in wheat- or potato-based noodles for the general components analysis, but no clear trend was observed. Higher values in the rates of water absorption, cooking loss, and volume increase were observed for the wheat flour noodle, while some variations were observed for potato noodles depending on the variety. The wheat flour noodles exhibited higher values of textural characteristics obtained from the texture profile analysis, except for adhesiveness. Higher gluten contents as well as lower ash contents in the wheat flour noodles compared to the potato noodles are thought to be the two key factors contributing to this finding.
Role of Fluoroquniolone in Isoniazid-monoresistant Tuberculosis : A Multicenter Study in Korea

Background In 2018, the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines for the treatment of isoniazid (H)-monoresistant (Hr) tuberculosis (TB) recommend a six-month four-drug regimen: rifampicin (R), ethambutol (E), pyrazinamide (Z) and levofloxacin. However, the WHO assessed its regimen to be of very low certainty. This cohort study assessed the impact of fluoroquinolone (Fq) on treatment of effectiveness among Hr-TB patients. Methods This was a retrospective cohort study of 356 Hr-TB patients in 2010-2018. Baseline regimens were classified into 2 groups based on the duration of Z uses; 6-month REZ (6REZ) and combination of 2-month REZ and 7-month RE (2REZ/7RE). Multivariable logistic regression was performed to assess association between Fq use and negative regimen-specific outcomes, which included death due to TB, treatment failure or disease recurrence. Results Of 365 enrolled patients, 256 (71.9%) were treated with 6REZ regimen and 116 (32.6%) with additional Fq use. There were 93 (38.8%) and 39 (33.6%) cases of negative regimen-specific outcomes in patients treated without and with Fq uses, respectively. In a univariable logistic regression model comparing with and without Fq uses, there was no difference in odds of negative regimen-specific outcomes (odds ratio [OR] = 0.80, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.50-1.27); however, compared to 2REZ/7RE regimen, 6REZ regimen was significantly associated with negative regimen-specific outcomes (OR = 2.15, 95% CI = 1.29-3.61). Results varied minimally in a multivariable model. Among patients with positive outcomes, the median overall treatment period was 274 days and additional Fq use did not reduce overall treatment period (273 days in regimen without Fq vs. 279 days in regimen with Fq, p=0.086). Conclusions We found that additional Fq use did not show more benefits for Hr-TB patients. However, 2REZ/7RE regimen was more efficacious than 6REZ regimen. The WHO’s Hr-TB recommendation needs to be carefully re-evaluated with further prospective studies.

Hybrid nanoparticles (NPs) consisting of an n-type CdSe/ZnS quantum dot (QD) as a core and p-type pi-conjugate molecules as a shell were fabricated, and their nanoscale photoluminescence (PL) and photoresponsive molecular electronic characteristics were investigated. pi-Conjugated macromolecular dioctyloxybenzodithiophene-based polythiophene (P3000) or a single carbazole (CB) molecule with insulating molecular blocks were attached to the QD surface. The nanoscale PL characteristics for the single QD were drastically changed through close contact with P3000 owing to energy and charge transfer effects. However, for the hybrid QD-CB NP, the PL of the QD was dominant because of weak energy transfer resulting from the relatively longer insulating molecular block between the QD and the CB molecule. From time-resolved PL spectra, the exciton lifetimes of the QD in the hybrid QD-P3000 and QD-CB NPs were clearly different because of a variation in the energy transfer rate. The photocurrents of the single hybrid QD-P3000 NP were considerably higher and actively responded to both forward and reverse biases due to the energy and charge transfer effects, while those of the single QD-CB NP exhibited diode characteristics. The QD-based hybrids show distinct nanoscale PL features and photoresponsive molecular electronic characteristics depending on the structures of pi-conjugated molecules.
