Aiming at water shut-off in high temperature reservoirs, the hydroquinone (HQ)–hexamethylenetetra-mine (HMTA) gel system was studied. The gelation performance and effects of various parameters weresystematically evaluated. With increase of the concentrations and temperature, gelation time decreasesand gel strength increases. In addition, gelation rate and gel strength were enhanced on adding acid. Moreover, the gel system shows good salt tolerance. The thermal stability measurement indicates thatthe gel can maintain stability up to 140 8C. Uniformly distributed three-dimensional network structurewas formed in the gel. At last, the gelation mechanism was proposed, illuminating the detailed gelationprocess clearly.
Mitigating Recurrent Congestion via Particle Swarm Optimization Variable Speed Limit Controllers

Variable speed limit (VSL) has proven to be an efficient motorway control measure to mitigate traffic congestion at motorway bottlenecks. VSL can reduce the effect of shockwave on traffic conditions through smoothing the transition between the congested downstream and upstream traffic flows. In this paper, a particle swarm optimization (PSO) based VSL method is proposed to minimize the probability of flow breakdown at bottleneck sections and ensure a maximum utilization of the current motorway infrastructure. The results show that the motorway system equipped with PSO based VSL outperformed the one with rule based VSL.
Enhancement of Signal-to-noise Ratio Based on Multiplication Function for Phi-OTDR

We propose a novel methodology based on the multiplication function to improve the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for vibration detection in a phi optical time-domain reflectometer system (phi-OTDR). The extreme-mean complementary empirical mode decomposition (ECEMD) is designed to break down the original signal into a set of inherent mode functions (IMFs). The multiplication function in terms of selected IMFs is used to determine a vibration’s position. By this method, the SNR of a phi-OTDR system is enhanced by several orders of magnitude. Simulations and experiments applying the method to real data prove the validity of the proposed approach.

The main purpose of this article is to determine the processing parameters of the worm and establish the theory of the meshing limit line of toroidal surface enveloping cylindrical worm drive with the arc-toothed worm. Based on this condition that the instantaneous contact line is a planar curve during grinding the worm blank, it can be deduced that its torsion is equal to zero, then the formulae which determine the installing position of the grinding wheel are acquired. Following this, the equations of the tooth surfaces and the meshing limit function are all obtained. According to the geometric construction and elimination method, the meshing limit points are determined by iteratively solving the corresponding nonlinear equation in its solution domain. In addition, the result of the numerical case demonstrates that the worm helicoid is divided into two parts by the meshing limit line, which makes the working length of the worm cannot reach half of its total thread length. And by adjusting the design parameters of the worm pair and the processing parameters of the worm, the meshing limit line cannot be eliminated and its position on the surfaces of the worm and the worm gear has no notable change.
Risley Prisms Scanning Optical Imaging System using Liquid Crystal Spatial Light Modulator

Chromatic aberrations induced by Risley prisms made of a single material can be substantially compensated using a liquid crystal spatial light modulator while still keeping the prism pairs compact, simple and lightweight. A ±10° optical scanning imaging system with ±2° instantaneous field based on LC-SLM correction is designed as an example. The ultimate simulation results show that this kind of scheme is an effective way of improving imaging performance dynamically across the full field of scanning.

As a sophisticated detection technology, LIDAR has been widely employed to probe low-altitude windshear. Due to the drawbacks of the traditional ramp algorithm, the alarm accuracy of the LIDAR has not been satisfactory. Aiming at settling this matter, a novel method is proposed on the basis of improved signal smoothing and second windshear detection, which essentially acts as a combination of ramp algorithm and segmentation approach, involving the human factor as well as signal fluctuations. Experiments on the real and artificial signals verify our approach.

Laccases are multicopper oxidases with important industrial value. In the study, a novel laccase gene (mco) in a Staphylococcus haemolyticus isolate is identified and heterologously expressed in Escherichia coli. Mco shares less than 40% of amino acid sequence identities with the other characterized laccases, exhibiting the maximal activity at pH 4.0 and 60oC with 2,2'-azino-bis (3- ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) diammonium salt (ABTS) as a substrate. Additionally, the Mco is tolerant to a wide range of pH, heavy metal ions and many organic solvents, and it has a high decolorization capability toward textile dyes in the absence of redox mediators. The characteristics of the Mco make this laccase potentially useful for industrial applications such as textile finishing. Based on BLASTN results, mco is found to be widely distributed in both the bacterial genome and bacterial plasmids. Its potential role in oxidative defense ability of staphylococci may contribute to the bacterial colonization and survival.
