      • Joint Optimization Method Combining Genetic Algorithm and Numerical Algorithm Based on MATLAB

        A two-bar plane truss is builtin MATLAB based on mathematical model. Then the authors use genetic algorithm toolbox to solve this problem. The parametric truss model is set up in the finite element analysis software ANSYS. It is analyzed by first-order algorithm. The comparison of two kinds results show the pure genetic algorithm doesn’t always have an advantage over other algorithms. In the end, a joint optimization method is put forward on the basis of genetic algorithm. It combines genetic algorithm based on MATLAB toolbox and numerical algorithm based on quasi-Newton method. This method is illustrated by the numerical example of the two-bar plane truss. The results show this joint optimization method can get the global optimal solution of this problem every time.

      • Comparison of Survival Rates between Chinese and Thai Patients with Breast Cancer

        The burden and severity of a cancer can be reflected by patterns of survival. Breast cancer prognosis between two countries with a different socioeconomic status and cultural beliefs may exhibit wide variation. This study aimed to describe survival in patients with breast cancer in China and Thailand in relation to demographic and clinical prognostic information. Materials and Methods: We compared the survival of 1,504 Chinese women in Yunnan province and 929 Thai women in Songkhla with breast cancer from 2006 to 2010. Descriptive prognostic comparisons between the Chinese and Thai women were performed by relative survival analysis. A Cox regression model was used to calculate the hazard ratios of death, taking into account the age, disease stage, period of diagnosis and country. Results: The overall 5-year survival proportion for patients diagnosed with breast cancer for Yunnan province (0.72) appeared slightly better than Songkhla (0.70) without statistical significance. Thai women diagnosed with distant and regional breast cancer had poorer survival than Chinese women. Disease stage was the most important determinant of survival from the results of Cox regression model. Conclusions: Breast cancer patients in Kunming had slightly greater five-year survival rate than patients in Songkhla. Both Chinese and Thai women need improvement in prognosis, which could conceivably be attained through increased public education and awareness regarding early detection and compliance to treatment protocols.

        Pretreatments of Broussonetia papyrifera: in vitro assessment on gas and methane production, fermentation characteristic, and methanogenic archaea profile

        Objective: The present study was conducted to examine the gas production, fermentation characteristics, nutrient degradation, and methanogenic community composition of a rumen fluid culture with Broussonetia papyrifera (B. papyrifera) subjected to ensiling or steam explosion (SE) pretreatment. Methods: Fresh B. papyrifera was collected and pretreated by ensiling or SE, which was then fermented with ruminal fluids as ensiled B. papyrifera group, steam-exploded B. papyrifera group, and untreated B. papyrifera group. The gas and methane production, fermentation characteristics, nutrient degradation, and methanogenic community were determined during the fermentation. Results: Cumulative methane production was significantly improved with SE pretreatment compared with ensiled or untreated biomass accompanied with more volatile fatty acids production. After 72 h incubation, SE and ensiling pretreatments decreased the acid detergent fiber contents by 39.4% and 22.9%, and neutral detergent fiber contents by 10.6% and 47.2%, respectively. Changes of methanogenic diversity and abundance of methanogenic archaea corresponded to the variations in fermentation pattern and methane production. Conclusion: Compared with ensiling pretreatment, SE can be a promising technique for the efficient utilization of B. papyrifera, which would contribute to sustainable livestock production systems.         Fabrication of polymer compound microlens by lens-on-lens microstructures

        We proposed a novel method for fabricating polymer compound microlenses (PCMLs) using micro-inkjet technique and subsequent curing process. Two different types of PCMLs with sandwich microstructure (PDMS-Glycerol-PDMS), concave and convex PCMLs, have been designed and fabricated in experiments. Convex PCML has two real images and two foci. The concave PCML has one real and one virtual focal planes, which can generate one real image and one virtual image respectively. Moreover, the diameter of concave PCML can be controlled by adjusting the curing time and temperature. The proposed method is simple, efficient and suitable for realizing large-scale high numerical aperture PCMLs array, which has potential applications in diverse optical systems such as optical storage and three-dimensional imaging.

        A novel pathogenic deletion in ISPD causes Walker-Warburg syndrome in a Chinese family

        Background Walker-Warburg syndrome (WWS) is a genetically heterogeneous disease that often presents with complex brain and eye malformations and congenital muscular dystrophy. Mutations of the ISPD gene have been identified as one of the most frequent causes of WWS. Objective The current study aimed to identify the cause of severe congenital hydrocephalus and brain dysplasia in our subject. Methods Genomic DNA was extracted from the fetus's umbilical cord blood and peripheral venous blood of the parents. The genetic analysis included whole-exome sequencing and qPCR. Additionally, in silico analysis and cellular experiments were performed. Results We identified a novel homozygous deletion of exons 7 to 9 in the ISPD gene of the fetus with WWS. In silico analysis revealed a defective domain structure in the C-terminus domain of the ISPD. Analysis of the electrostatic potential energy showed the formation of a new binding pocket formation on the surface of the mutant ISPD gene (ISPD-del ex7-9). Cellular study of the mutant ISPD revealed a significant change in its cellular localization, with the ISPD-del ex7-9 protein translocating from the cytoplasm to the nucleus compared to wild-type ISPD, which is mostly present in the cytoplasm. Conclusion The present study expands the mutational spectrum of WWS caused by ISPD mutations. Importantly, our work suggests that whole-exome sequencing could be considered as a diagnostic option for fetuses with congenital hydrocephalus and brain malformations when karyotype or chromosomal microarray analysis fails to provide a definitive diagnosis.
