Effect of government R&D subsidies on firms’ innovation in China

This study investigates the effects of R&D subsidies on firms’ innovation using panel data of Chinese listed firms from 2008 to 2013. Through propensity score matching method, we determine that recurrent, high-tech firms are more likely to receive public grants. Moreover, firms affiliated with higher-level governments and located in minimally marketised regions have a higher probability of receiving government financial support. China's state intervention to correct market failure related to firms’ R&D activity is confirmed to be reasonable in an observable time given an instantaneous additionality effect. However, the stimulation effect of R&D subsidies on innovation outputs has not been verified. Results obtained through a continuous matching method show no optimal amount of R&D subsidies for firms in China, but a declining yet a positive marginal effect of treatment has been identified given an increase in the amount of R&D subsidies.

Fleagrass, a herb known for its pleasant aroma, is widely used as a mosquito repellent, antibacterial agent, and for treating colds, reducing swelling, and alleviating pain. The antifungal effects of the essential oils of fleagrass and carvacrol against Candida albicans were investigated by evaluating the growth and the mycelial and biofilm development of C. albicans. Transmission electron microscopy was used to evaluate the integrity of the cell membrane and cell wall of C. albicans. Fleagrass exhibited high fungicidal activity against C. albicans at concentrations of 0.5% v/v (via the Ras1/cAMP/PKA pathway). Furthermore, transmission electron microscopy revealed damage to the cell wall and membrane after treatment with the essential oil, which was further confirmed by the increased levels of β-1,3-glucan and chitin in the cell wall. This study showed that fleagrass exerts good fungicidal and hyphal growth inhibition activity against C. albicans by disrupting its cell wall, and thus, fleagrass may be a potential antifungal drug.
Microstructure and Texture Evolution of Rolled Plate for Cu–15Cr In-Situ Composite

The microstructure and texture of different rolling processes in situ Cu–15Cr sheets are studied. The results show that thesecond phase Cr in the material gradually become broken, flattened, merged and homogenized from dendritic state to orientedthin lath. Meanwhile, the texture in distributed copper matrix grains finally forms Brass {110}<112>, Goss {001}<110>and Copper {112}<111> textures along with Cr phase texture of randomly distributed α-fiber (<110> fiber) and γ-fiber(<111> fiber) texture. Based on VPSC (visco-plastic self-consistent model), the texture of cold rolled Cu–15Cr compositeis simulated, and the simulation result indicates that obvious twinning effect in the copper matrix appears with a feature ofa special texture evolution law of Goss.

<P>Ferroptosis, an iron-based cell-death pathway, has recently attracted great attention owing to its effectiveness in killing cancer cells. Previous investigations focused on the development of iron-based nanomaterials to induce ferroptosis in cancer cells by the up-regulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated by the well-known Fenton reaction. Herein, we report a ferroptosis-inducing agent based on arginine-rich manganese silicate nanobubbles (AMSNs) that possess highly efficient glutathione (GSH) depletion ability and thereby induce ferroptosis by the inactivation of glutathione-dependent peroxidases 4 (GPX4). The AMSNs were synthesized <I>via</I> a one-pot reaction with arginine (Arg) as the surface ligand for tumor homing. Subsequently, a significant tumor suppression effect can be achieved by GSH depletion-induced ferroptosis. Moreover, the degradation of AMSNs during the GSH depletion contributed to <I>T</I><SUB>1</SUB>-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) enhancement as well as on-demand chemotherapeutic drug release for synergistic cancer therapy. We anticipate that the GSH-depletion-induced ferroptosis strategy by using manganese-based nanomaterials would provide insights in designing nanomedicines for tumor-targeted theranostics.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>

Centripetal Accelerated Particle Swarm Optimization (CAPSO) is a recent and well embraced, interest stimulating topic in swarm intelligence (SI). The original CAPSO method does not have parameters to tune or adjust, so two new parameters are introduced to catapult the efficiency and boost the overall performance. For further enhancement of the algorithm’s efficiency, the principle of quantum-behaved particles is also added. In evaluating the capability of the Improved Centripetal Accelerated Particle Swarm Optimization (ICAPSO) algorithm, we tested it on medical image database, in the aspect of Relevance Feedback of a Content-Based Image Retrieval (CBIR) system, clearly, ICAPSO outperformed others.
