        The present paper is an introduction to the whole project of "The systematic studies on Korean Betulaceae". Three studies under the project were performed this year and presented in this report : a review of taxonomic literatures and the construction of distribution maps by Woo-Tchul Lee, pollen morphology by Sang-Tae Lee and Moo-Yeol Kim, and wood anatomy by Woong-Young Soh and Kwan-Bae Jeon.

        To determine the degrees of specialization and intergeneric relationship within the Korean Betulaceae a comparative anatomy was performed with 3-4 year-old parts of growth rings of the stem wood from a total of 18 species and 7 varieties of the family. Some specialized anatomical characters suggests the family to be more or less advanced. Tribe Betuleae possessing scalariform perforation plates exclusively, steeper angle of end wall and alternate pittings, was thought to be more primitive than tribe Coryleae. Among the Betuleae, Alnus exhibited to be more primitive than Betula on the bases of the number of bars on the perforation plate, the angle of end wall and the pitting pattern. Among the coryleae, it was thought that Corylus having a scalariform perforation plate exclusively, and a intermediate number of bars was the most primitive, whereas both Carpinus and Ostrya having simple perforation plates and homogeneous I ray were the most advanced.

        Efficient Phosphinothricin Mediated Selection of Callus Derived from Brachypodium Mature Seed

        Brachypodium distachyon is rapidly emerged in biological study and has been currently used as a model system for genetics and functional studies for crop improvement and biofuel production. Phosphinothricin (PPT) has been widely used as a selectable agent, which raises ammonium content and induces toxicity in non-transformed plant cells. However PPT selection is not much effective on Brachypodium callus consequently reducing transformation efficiency. In order to identify the efficient conditions of PPT selection, calli obtained from mature seeds of Brachypodium (PI 254867) were cultured on the callus inducing medium (CIM) or regeneration medium (ReM) containing serial dilutions of the PPT (0, 2, 5, 10, and 15 mg/l) in dark or light condition. Callus growth and ammonium content of each treatment were measured 2 weeks after the treatment. Although callus growth and ammonium content did not show much difference in CIM, slow callus growth and increased ammonium accumulation were found in ReM. No significant difference of ammonium accumulation in response to PPT was found between dark and light conditions. In order to identify major factors affecting increased ammonium accumulation, callus was cultured on the media in combined with phytohormones (2,4-D or kinetin) and carbon sources (sucrose or maltose) containing with PPT (5 mg/l). The highest ammonium content in callus was found in the kinetin and maltose media.

        Differential Induction of PepTLP Expression via Complex Regulatory System against Fungal Infection, Wound, and Jasmonic Acid Treatment during Pre-and Post-Ripening of Nonclimacteric Pepper Fruit

        Ripe fruit of pepper (Capsicum annuum) showed resistance to Colletotrichum gloeoporioides, but unripe fruit was susceptible. We previously isolated the PepTLP gene that induced in both unripe and ripe fruit by fungal infection and wound, and only in ripe fruit by jasmonic acid (JA) treatment. To examine further regulation of PepTLP, the action of specific agonist and antagonists of known signaling effector on the .PepTLP expression by fungal infection, wound, and JA was investigated. A similar dephosphorylation event negatively activated all the PepTLP expression in the ripe fruit by fungal infection, wound, and JA. The induction of PepTLP expression by wound is differentially regulated via phosphorylation and dephosphorylation step during pre- and post-ripening, respectively. In addition, the induction of PepTLP expression in the ripe fruit by wound and JA is differentially regulated via dephosphorylation and phosphorylation step, respectively. Only both wound and JA treatment has synergistic effect on the PepTLP expression in the unripe fruit. Both SA and JA treatments on the unripe fruit, and both wound or JA and SA on the ripe fruit could not do any effect on the expression of PepTLP. These results suggest that the induction of PepTLP expression is differentially regulated via complex regulatory system against fungal infection, wound, and JA treatment during pre- and post-ripening of pepper fruit.

        Effect of Korean Herbal Formula (Modified Ojayeonjonghwan) on Androgen Receptor Expression in an Aging Rat Model of Late Onset Hypogonadism

        Purpose: Testosterone replacement therapy is an effective treatment for late-onset hypogonadism (LOH) despite a few con-traindications and side-effects. The aim of this study was to determine whether modified Ojayeonjonghwan (KH-204, Korean herbal formula) improved LOH. KH-204 is a strong antioxidant herbal formula. We evaluated the effect of Korean herbal pre-scription on androgen receptor (AR) expression in an aged rat model of LOH. Materials and Methods: Eighteen-month-old rats were used as aged LOH rat models. Eighteen Sprague-Dawley rats were ran-domly divided into three equal groups of six animals each and treated with one of the following: 1) normal control group (oral administration with distilled water, n=6), 2) KH-204 200 group (oral administration with 200 mg/kg of KH-204, n=6), and 3) KH-204 400 group (oral administration with 400 mg/kg of KH-204, n=6). After four weeks of treatment (once daily, distilled water or KH-204), serum testosterone levels, changes in testicular and epididymal weight, Western blotting analysis of AR ex-pression and measurement of oxidative stress were examined. Results: Treatment with the herbal formulation KH-204 200 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg (1) increased the weights of testis and epi-didymis; (2) increased the level of serum testosterone; (3) increased the level of superoxide dismutase and reduced the level of 8-hydroxy-20-deoxyguanosine; and (4) upregulated AR expression in testicular tissue. Conclusions: KH-204 might be an effective alternative for LOH. It improves antioxidant mechanisms and increases testicular AR expression without side-effects.

      • Research on Sports Policy of China and Its Task Towards Future Development

        개혁·개방이후 중국의 스포츠는 전 국민에게 보급되는 대중화 및 다양화 방향으로 행하였다. 이는 毛澤東 시대의 스포츠가 사회주의 건설을 위한 인민체력증진의 목적으로 사용되었던 것과 다른 측면이다. 중국은 80년대와 90년대의 두 차례 개혁을 통하여 점진적인 체제전환을 행하여 스포츠선진국가의 경험을 받아들이는 동시에 중국 특색의 사회주의 시장경제에 적응한 스포츠 환경을 이루었다. 이 연구는 1978년 이후 세계스포츠강국으로 급성장 한 중국 스포츠체제의 변천과정을 규명하고 중국 스포츠체제에서 나타난 특징과 향후과제 제시를 밝히기 위한 것이다. 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 개방·개혁 이후 세계의 스포츠 강국으로 등장한 중국은 스포츠의 지속적인 발전을 이루기 위하여 시장경제체제에 적응한 엘리트 스포츠와 대중스포츠가 병행 발전하는 스포츠체제를 수립하였다. 둘째, 개혁·개방이후, 鄧小平의 一國雨制사상을 근간으로 국제 스포츠무대에서 臺灣을 승인하는 與運摸式이란 스포츠외교정책을 수립하여 국제올림픽위원회와의 관계를 회복하여 국제스포츠행사에 적극적으로 참여하는 능동적인 자태로 국제스포츠무대에서 활약을 하였다. 셋째, 중국의 스포츠 강화정책은 세계 여러 스포츠강국의 스포츠정책과 동일한 형태를 띠면서 중국사회의 현상에 맞는 독특한 형태로 발전하였다. 넷째, 개혁·개방이후, 정부는 국가에서 집권하였던 스포츠체제를 사회 각 영역에 분할하여 사회 각 영역의 스포츠참여를 확대하였고 대중스포츠는 경제의 발전과 더불어 인간의 삶을 영위하는 차원에서 대중스포츠 활성화를 추구하는 체제를 구축하고자 하였으며, 복지형에서 경영형으로 전환하였고, 대중스포츠의 보급은 대도시를 중심으로 하여 신속히 이루어지고 있다. 다섯째, 국가위상을 위한 엘리트스포츠의 차원에서 벗어나 2008년 北京올림픽대회의 유치를 계기로 대중스포츠와 엘리트스포츠가 조화로운 균형을 갖춘 병행 발전을 도모하여야 하며, 대중스포츠의 활성화에 대한 시장화 한 정책이 신속히 이루어져야 한다.

      • 대구 U 대회에 대한 태도가 공식 스폰서의 구매의도에 미치는 영향

        The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between attitude of college students toward 2003 Daegu Universide Games and purchase intention (PI) for official sponsor (Samsung Electronics). Respondents (n=980) were sampled from 6 different universities in Daegu area. Questionnaire were obtained using simple random sampling method and self-administration method. Descriptive analysis, t-Test, and regression (simple & multiple) were performed for data analysis. Results were as follows: First, a relationship between attitude toward the Universide Games (UG) and official sponsor was found to be average level, and the relationship between attitude toward the brand (AB) and PI was almost positive level. Second, for Universide involvement, high involvement group had more positive awareness for all factors such as UG, attitude toward the sponsor (AS), and AB than low involvement group. Third, for UG and AS, sponsor emblem and logo had an effect on AS. In addition, sponsor emblem only was found to be statistically significant. Marketing insights and strategies based upon information gained from data analysis were discussed.

        Functional Circuitry on Commercial Fabric via Textile-Compatible Nanoscale Film Coating Process for Fibertronics

        <P>Fabric-based electronic textiles (e-textiles) are the fundamental components of wearable electronic systems, which can provide convenient hand-free access to computer and electronics applications. However, e-textile technologies presently face significant technical challenges. These challenges include difficulties of fabrication due to the delicate nature of the materials, and limited operating time, a consequence of the conventional normally on computing architecture, with volatile power-hungry electronic components, and modest battery storage. Here, we report a novel poly(ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) (pEGDMA)textile memristive nonvolatile logic-in-memory circuit, enabling normally off computing, that can overcome those challenges. To form the metal electrode and resistive switching layer, strands of cotton yarn were coated with aluminum (Al) using a solution dip coating method, and the pEGDMA was conformally applied using an initiated chemical vapor deposition process. The intersection of two Al/pEGDMA coated yarns becomes a unit memristor in the lattice structure. The pEGDMA-Textile Memristor (ETM), a form of crossbar array, was interwoven using a grid of Al/pEGDMA coated yarns and untreated yarns. The former were employed in the active memristor and the latter suppressed cell-to-cell disturbance. We experimentally demonstrated for the first time that the basic Boolean functions, including a half adder as well as NOT, NOR, OR, AND, and NAND logic gates, are successfully implemented with the ETM crossbar array on a fabric substrate. This research may represent a breakthrough development for practical wearable and smart fibertronics.</P>

      • Self-powered wearable touchpad composed of all commercial fabrics utilizing a crossline array of triboelectric generators

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>In the internet of things (IoT) era, electronic textile (E-textile), which combines diverse functional parts on a fabric substrate, has attracted much attention. Among the various components for E-textile, the human-machine interface device is one of the most important. Here, a wearable fabric touchpad based on a triboelectric generator (TEG) is demonstrated. It is created only with inexpensive commercialized fabrics. Long string-shaped fabric TEGs act as the rows and columns of a crossline array, and each cross-point of a unit cell at each row and column constructs a unit pixel. The proposed touchpad accurately traces basic motions such as the vertical tapping and lateral dragging of a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) stylus and generates corresponding output signals. Based on this capability, the proposed touchpad can be utilized for the handwriting of digits and for their recognition as well. Digits from 0 to 9 written on the touchpad are successfully classified by a pre-trained neural network with very high accuracy of 98%. This implies that the proposed wearable touchpad has immediate practicality. Considering its cost-effectiveness, compatibility with the textile industry, and its accurate operation, the proposed touchpad is a strong candidate for use in interface devices in the future E-textile industry.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> A self-powered wearable touchpad was demonstrated using a fabric-based TEG array. </LI> <LI> Only cheap commercialized fabrics were employed for the general usage. </LI> <LI> Basic touchpad operation was experimentally verified. </LI> <LI> A digit recognition program was integrated to the proposed touchpad. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>
