This study attempted to assess the applicability of the hair-hardener considering hair elasticity and retention through analysis of changes in hair conditions after chemical treatment. For this, the following were analyzed: safety and stability of the hair-hardener, changes in hair thickness, amino acid, changes in surface color, hair surface using the SEM, changes in tensile strength, and wave efficiency by the frequency of shampooing. Then, the results found the following: The stability of the hair-hardener was confirmed because there were no changes in its physical properties and color at room temperature and constant temperature. In a clinical allergy test as well, a negative response was found in all 20 clinical trial participants, which confirms its safety. In terms of changes in hair thickness, hair was thicker in the group that used the hair hardener than in the control group. In comparison of amino acid, total amino acid, L-glutamic acid, and cysteine contents increased in the experimental group that used the hair hardener. In terms of changes in surface color, L* value was high in the experimental group. A* value, which represents the level of reddish color, was also high in the experimental group. In contrast, b* value, which reveals the level of yellow color, was low in the experimental group. In observation of hair surface using the SEM, hair cuticles were tidier in the experimental group than in the control group. In terms of tensile strength, the experimental group was greater than the control group. According to measurement of wave efficiency by the frequency of shampooing after a general perm and setting perm as well, wave formation was more efficient in the experimental group.

Chunghyul-Dan (CHD) is the first choice agent for the prevention and treatment of stroke at the Kyung Hee Medical Hospital. To date, CHD has been reported to have beneficial effects on brain disease in animals and humans, along with antioxidative and anti-inflammatory effects. The aim of this study was to evaluate the pharmacological effects of CHD on a traumatic brain injury (TBI) mouse model to explore the possibility of CHD use in patients with TBI. The TBI mouse model was induced using the controlled cortical impact method. CHD was orally administered twice a day for 5 d after TBI induction; mice were assessed for brain damage, brain edema, blood-brain barrier (BBB) damage, motor deficits, and cognitive impairment. Treatment with CHD reduced brain damage seen on histological examination and improved motor and cognitive functions. However, CHD did not reduce brain edema and BBB damage. In conclusion, CHD could be a candidate agent in the treatment of patients with TBI. Further studies are needed to assess the exact mechanisms of the effects during the acute-subacute phase and pharmacological activity during the chronic-convalescent phase of TBI.

A new bent-shaped molecule which consists of an acute-angled central core and all-ester linking groups has been prepared: 2,3-naphthylene bis[4-(4-n-dodecyloxybenzoyloxy)benzoate]. Its mesomorphic properties have been investigated by DSC, polarizing microscopy, and X-ray diffraction measurements. Moreover, we have carried out detailed electro-optical investigations including birefringence, switching current response, IR dichroism, and second-harmonic generation (SHG) measurements. On the basis of the experimental data a plausible model for the mesophase alignments has been proposed.

Graphic Abstract

As an electric field was applied to homogeneously aligned cells, a new bent-shaped molecule with an acute-angled central core, 2,3-naphthylene bis[4-(4-n-dodecyloxybenzoyloxy)benzoate], showed a ferroelectric smectic A phase (SmAPF; Figs c–e).

The Coordinate Control Method of LTC Transformer and Capacitor Banks at Distribution Substation
Choi, Joon-Ho,Ahn, Seon-Ju,Nam, Hae-Kon,Kim, Jae-Chul,Moon, Seung-Il,Jung, Won-Wook,Song, Il-Keun The Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers 2012 Journal of Electrical Engineering & Technology Vol.7 No.3
The Load Tap Changing (LTC) transformer and Shunt Capacitor (SC) bank are major devices for voltage and reactive power control in a distribution substation. Thus, the coordination operation of a LTC transformer and a SC bank is required to achieve better voltage and reactive power compensation at a distribution substation in the same time. This paper proposes coordinate control method of LTC transformer and SC bank to achieve better voltage and reactive power compensation and operation times of these two devices in the same time. The mathematical formulations of the proposed coordinate control method are introduced. Sample case studies are shown to verify the effectiveness of the proposed coordinate control method.

The phytochemical oxyresveratrol has been shown to exert diverse biological activities including prevention of obesity. However, the exact reason underlying the anti-obese effects of oxyresveratrol is not fully understood. Here, we investigated the effects and mechanism of oxyresveratrol in adipocytes and high-fat diet (HFD)-fed obese mice. Oxyresveratrol suppressed lipid accumulation and expression of adipocyte markers during the adipocyte differentiation of 3T3-L1 and C3H10T1/2 cells. Administration of oxyresveratrol in HFD-fed obese mice prevented body-weight gains, lowered adipose tissue weights, improved lipid profiles, and increased glucose tolerance. The anti-obese effects were linked to increases in energy expenditure and higher rectal temperatures without affecting food intake, fecal lipid content, and physical activity. The increased energy expenditure by oxyresveratrol was concordant with the induction of thermogenic genes including Ucp1, and the reduction of white adipocyte selective genes in adipose tissue. Furthermore, Foxo3a was identified as an oxyresveratrol-induced gene and it mimicked the effects of oxyresveratrol for induction of thermogenic genes and suppression of white adipocyte selective genes, suggesting the role of Foxo3a in oxyresveratrol-mediated anti-obese effects. Taken together, these data show that oxyresveratrol increases energy expenditure through the induction of thermogenic genes in adipose tissue and further implicates oxyresveratrol as an ingredient and Foxo3a as a molecular target for the development of functional foods in obesity and metabolic diseases.

Architects' Professional Alliance with the Furniture Design Industry in Interwar America
Won-Joon Choi 한국가구학회 2010 한국가구학회지 Vol.21 No.3
The professional alliance between disciplines of architecture and furniture design in the interwar years as displayed in the prominent architectural exhibitions of the era is interesting in the context of professionalization of American architecture. The way furniture design gradually became part of the architectural shows not only reflected but provided the practical field in which the architectural institution sought, under the new social order since the mid 1910s, a new professional cast?departing from the former milieu in the realm of high-art by the Beaux-Arts Movement. Exhibitions held by the Architectural League of New York in the 1920s revealed that the early impetus for reformation toward efficiency had been subsumed by the system of Beaux-Arts. By contrast, “The Architect and the Industrial Arts” show of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, in which the most prominent architects of the era exercised their professional expertise in the design of “Moderne Style” interior furnishings, clearly shows how architects, in the milieu of expanding commercial market, sought to align their profession as industrial designers.
