Conservative surgical approach to aggressive benign odontogenic neoplasm: a report of three cases

Aggressive benign odontogenic neoplasms have substantial potential to grow to an enormous size with resulting bone deformities, and they often invade adjacent tissues and spread beyond their normal clinical and radiographic margins; as such, they have a high rate of recurrence. Historically, management (conservative versus aggressive) on the basis of clinical, radiographic and/or histopathologic characteristics has been controversial. However, recent advances in the understanding of the biological features of these lesions may provide greater evidence of the benefits of conservative management. Three patients with different complaints and final histopathologic diagnoses were enrolled in the study. All three cases were treated by a single operator with similar conservative surgical procedures. During follow-up, the patients had uneventful secondary healing and bone regeneration, less packing time than previously reported, no clinical or radiographic evidence of recurrence and no apparent deformity. The aggressive behavior of these lesions requires long clinical and radiographic follow-up. Conservative surgical management may be an option to reduce recurrence and morbidity and increase the probability of uneventful secondary healing and bone regeneration.

Endophytic fungi from medicinal plants are a rich source of new biologically active compounds. In the present study, an endophytic fungus Nigrospora sphaerica (Berk. & Broome) Petch was isolated from Dillenia indica L and was characterized morphologically and at molecular levels. The isolated fungus was investigated for antibacterial activity, antifungal activity, antioxidant activity, total phenolics and flavonoids content, and its responsible bioactive molecules. The toxicity test revealed that the crude extract of Nigrospora sphaerica inhibited the growth of pathogenic bacteria, i.e., E. coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The value of MIC (Minimum inhibitory concentration) ranges from 82–115 µg/mL for the selected bacteria. The isolated endophytic fungus exhibited the highest inhibition against the Fusarium oxysporum (72%) and the lowest inhibition against Aspergillus niger (55%). The maximum scavenging activity was 88.1% at 600 µg/mL with an IC50 value of 85 µg/mL. GC–MS (Gas chromatography-Mass spectroscopy) analysis of the ethyl acetate extract revealed the presence of more than 40 compounds. Some of the major compounds present in extract were 1H-Indene, 1-methylene-(3.64%), Dodecane (8.52%), Tetradecane (11.59%), (-)-Mellein (3.85%), Hexadecane (10.13%), 1,2,5-Oxadiazole-3,4-dicarboxamide (5.95%), Octadecane (6.46%) and Benzoic acid, 2-(dimethylamino) ethyl ester. The compounds present in the extracts have various biological activities such as antiviral, antioxidant, insecticidal, cytotoxic, antihyperglycemic, antibacterial, antifungal activity. The compounds present in the extract can be used in clinical trials for further applications. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on bioactive molecules produced by Nigrospora sphaerica isolated from Dillenia indica L. having antioxidant and antimicrobial activity.

The current work describes the biosynthesis of stable AgNPs using aqueous extract of Xanthiumstrumarium (AEX) which act as both reducing as well as a stabilizing agent. The biosynthesis wasconfirmed by UV–visible spectroscopy where the presence of SPR band at lmax 436 nm corresponded tothe existence of AgNPs in reaction mixture. The optimum conditions for biosynthesis of AgNPs were30 min of sunlight exposure time, 3.0% (v/v) of AEX inoculum dose and 3.5 mM AgNO3 concentration. The synthesized AgNPs was characterized by HRTEM, SAED, FESEM, EDX, XRD, AFM, and FTIR whichshowed potent antibacterial and antileishmanial activity.

Copolymers of N-vinylpyrrolidone (NVP) comonomer with styrene (St), hydroxypropyl methacrylate (HPMA) and carboxyphenyl maleimide (CPMI) were synthesized by free radical polymerization using 2,2'-azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) initiator in 1,4-dioxane solvent. The copolymers formed were characterized by FTIR, $^1H$ NMR and $^{13}C$ NMR techniques and their thermal properties were studied by DSC and TGA. Copolymer composition was determined by $^1H$ NMR and/or by elemental analysis and monomer reactivity ratios (MRR) were estimated by the linear methods of Kelen-Tudos (K-T) and extended Kelen-Tudos (EK-T) and the non-linear approach. Copolymers of St and HPMA with NVP formed blocks of one of the monomer units, whereas alternating copolymers were obtained in CPMI-NVP, depending upon the side chain substitution. The MRR values are discussed in terms of monomer structural properties such as electronegativity and electron delocalization. The sequence distribution of monomers in the copolymers was studied by statistical method based on the average reactivity ratios obtained by EK-T method.

<P>The design and synthesis of hemi-fluorinated perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) alternatives is described using a Zn/CuI mediated Michael-type addition reaction in ionic liquids considering environmentally benign reaction conditions as well as products. Copper oxide nano-particles as friction-reduction and anti-wear additives in lubricating oil

Lubricants based on hydrocarbon-type mixtures do not satisfy all requirements of OEMs (Original equipment manufacturers) for modernapplications. The usual solution is the addition of small amounts of certain additive compounds that render significant improvementsin base oil properties such as oxidative degradation, tribological performance and other characteristics. This study examined the tribologicalbehavior of copper oxide nanoparticles as additives in mineral based multi-grade engine oil. All tests were performed undervarying loads and concentrations of nanoparticles in lubricating oil. The friction and wear experiments were performed using pin on disctribotester. The results demonstrated that nanoparticle additives can effectively improve the engine oil lubricating properties. This is becausenanoparticles enter the friction zone along with the flow of lubricant. They convert sliding friction into rolling friction, thus reducingthe effective friction coefficient. This work also included an analysis of worn surface morphology by scanning electron microscopy. This surface examination revealed that nanoparticle additives resulted in smoother worn surfaces. From the viscosity test it can be inferredthat viscosity of engine oil contains CuO nanoparticles is a function of nanoparticles concentration. Stribeck curves are used toreveal the lubrication regimes where the CuO nano-particles are most effective. It was found that the addition of CuO nanoparticles to thebase oil results in up to 50% reduction in coefficient of friction in the mixed lubricant regime.

Monocrotophos was administered orally to adult male albino mice at dose level of 3.0 mg/kg body weight/day/mice for 50 days. The treatment has found to affect spermatogenesis as well as the endocrine functions of the testis as indicated by gravimetric, histopathological and biochemical changes. The treatment has caused degenerative changes in the seminiferous tubules and Leydig cells of the testis and regression of the epididymis, seminal vesicle, vas deferens, prostate, Cowper’s gland and levator ani. Similarly, cauda epididymal sperm count and sperm motility have shown significant reduction. There was a significant reduction in the protein, glycogen, sialic acid, acid and alkaline phosphatase and increase in cholesterol in the testis of monocrotophos treated mice compared with the control. The causative factors for these changes due to monocrotophos administration were discussed.

Petroleum ether, benzene and alcohol extracts of the seeds of C. juncea were tested for antiimplantation and pregnancy interruption activities in female albino rats. Of these three extracts, the alcohol extract was found to be the most effective in causing antiimplantation and pregnancy interruption activities. These adverse effects on fertility are reversible upon withdrawal of the extract treatments. The alcohol extract was found to possess estrogenic activity. After subjecting to preliminary phytochemical screening, the alcohol extract showed positive tests for alkaloids, steroids, glycosides, saponins, flavonoides, fixed oils, phenols and tannins.
Effect of Crotalaria juncea seed extracts on the estrous cycle and ovarian activity in albino mice

Petroleum ether, benzene and alcohol extracts of seeds of C. juncea administered orally at the dose level of 25mg/100g body weight to adult female mice for 30 days, resulted in irregular estrous cycle with prolonged estrus and metaestrus and reduced diestrus and proestrus during the experimental period. Histological studies of the ovary indicate increases in the number of atretic follicles but decreases in the number of developing follicles, Graafian follicles and corpora lutea. The total cholesterol content of the ovary is increased, whereas ascorbic acid content is decreased. The weight of the uterus and its micrometric measurement in all experimental mice are increased significantly. The alcoholic extracts showed estrogenic activity in immature mice by early opening of the vagina, premature cornification of the vaginal epithilium and increases in uterine weight. However, alcohol extract of seeds of C. juncea was more effective in causing these changes compared to other extracts. After subjecting to preliminary phytochemical screenings alcohol extract showed positive; test for alkaloids, steroids, glycosides, flavones, phenols and tannins.
