Turkish Adolescent Perceptions about the Effects of Water Pipe Smoking on their Health

Background: Consumption of tobacco in the form of a water pipe has recently increased, especially among young people. This study aimed to develop a scale which would be used in order to detect perceptions about the effects of water pipe smoking on health and to test its validity and reliability. Our scale named "a scale of perception about the effects of water pipe smoking on health" was developed in order to detect factors effecting the perception of adolescents about the effects of water pipe smoking on health. Materials and Methods: The sample consisted of 150 voluntary students in scale development and 750 voluntary students in the study group. Data were collected via a questionnaire prepared by researchers themselves and 5-pont Likert scale for "a scale of perception about the effects of water pipe smoking on health" which was prepared through the literature. Data evaluation was carried out on a computer with SPSS. Results: The findings of the study showed that "a scale of perception about the effects of water pipe smoking on health" was valid and reliable. Total score average of the adolescents participated in the study was $58.5{\pm}1.25$. The mean score of the ones who did not smoke water pipe ($60.1{\pm}11.7$) was higher than the mean score of the ones who smoked water pipe ($51.6{\pm}13.8$), the difference being statistically significant. Conclusions: It is established that "a scale of perception about the effects of water pipe smoking on health" was a reliable and valid measurement tool. It is also found out that individuals who smoked a water pipe had a lower level of perception of water pipe smoking effects on health than their counterparts who did not smoke a water pipe.

Background: Postoperative chemoradiotherapy (CRT) of gastric carcinoma improves survival among high-risk patients. This study was undertaken to analyse long-term survival probability and the impact of certain covariates on the survival outcome in affected individuals. Materials and Methods: Between January 2000 and December 2005, 244 patients with gastric cancer underwent adjuvant radiotherapy (RT) in our institution. Data were retrieved retrospectively from patient files and analysed with SPSS version 21.0. Results: A total of 244 cases, with a male to female ratio of 2.2:1, were enrolled in the study. The median age of the patients was 52 years (range, 20-78 years). Surgical margin status was positive or close in 72 (33%) out of 220 patients. Postoperative adjuvant RT dose was 46 Gy. Median follow-up was 99 months (range, 79-132 months) and 23 months (range, 2-155 months) for surviving patients and all patients, respectively. Actuarial overall survival (OS) probability for 1-, 3-, 5- and 10-year was 79%, 37%, 24% and 16%, respectively. Actuarial progression free survival (PFS) probability was 69%, 34%, 23% and 16% in the same consecutive order. AJCC Stage I-II disease, subtotal gastrectomy and adjuvant CRT were significantly associated with improved OS and PFS in multivariate analyses. Surgical margin status or lymph node dissection type were not prognostic for survival. Conclusions: Postoperative CRT should be considered for all patients with high risk of recurrence after gastrectomy. Beside well-known prognostic factors such as stage, lymph node status and concurrent chemotherapy, the type of gastrectomy was an important prognostic factor in our series. With our findings we add to the discussion on the definition of required surgical margin for subtotal gastrectomy. We consider that our observations in gastric cancer patients in our clinic can be useful in the future randomised trials to point the way to improved outcomes.

Background: Herbal compounds such as curcumin which decrease telomerase and gene expression have been considered as beneficial tools for lung cancer treatment. In this article, we compared the effects of pure curcumin and curcumin-loaded NIPAAm-MAA nanoparticles on telomerase and PinX1 gene expression in a lung cancer cell line. Materials and Methods: A tetrazolium-based assay was used for determination of cytotoxic effects of curcumin on the Calu-6 lung cancer cell line and telomerase and pinX1 gene expression was measured with real-time PCR. Results: MTT assay showed that Curcumin-loaded NIPAAm-MAA inhibited the growth of the Calu-6 lung cancer cell line in a time and dose-dependent manner. Our q-PCR results showed that the expression of telomerase gene was effectively reduced as the concentration of curcumin-loaded NIPAAm-MAA increased while expression of the PinX1 gene became elevated. Conclusions: The results showed that curcumin-loaded-NIPAAm-MAA exerted cytotoxic effects on the Calu-6 cell line through down-regulation of telomerase and stimulation of pinX1 gene expression. NIPPAm-MAA could be good carrier for such kinds of hydrophobic agent.
Comparison of Univariate and Multivariate Gene Set Analysis in Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia

Background: Gene set analysis (GSA) incorporates biological with statistical knowledge to identify gene sets which are differentially expressed that between two or more phenotypes. Materials and Methods: In this paper gene sets differentially expressed between acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) with BCR-ABL and those with no observed cytogenetic abnormalities were determined by GSA methods. The BCR-ABL is an abnormal gene found in some people with ALL. Results: The results of two GSAs showed that the Category test identified 30 gene sets differentially expressed between two phenotypes, while the Hotelling's $T^2$ could discover just 19 gene sets. On the other hand, assessment of common genes among significant gene sets showed that there were high agreement between the results of GSA and the findings of biologists. In addition, the performance of these methods was compared by simulated and ALL data. Conclusions: The results on simulated data indicated decrease in the type I error rate and increase the power in multivariate (Hotelling's $T^2$) test as increasing the correlation between gene pairs in contrast to the univariate (Category) test.
Optimal Strain Gauge Placement in Instrumented Wheelset for Measuring Wheel-Rail Contact Forces

Concurrent measurement of the wheel-rail contact forces is always a crucial factor in design of safe railway vehicles. Commonly, instrumented wheelset has been developed towards this goal. A novel technique for precise design of the instrumented wheelset is presented in this paper. Influences of different factors such as the wheel rotation, the temperature or the centrifugal force are eliminated by cancelation of the higher harmonics. The accuracy of estimated forces is dependent on the placement of gauges on the instrumented wheelset. A solution procedure in terms of mean square error is implemented to determine the optimal radial locations of the strain gauge to achieve the most precise force measurement. Validation of the proposed method through numerical simulation is also presented. We show that the effectiveness and robustness of the technique are preserved even in the presence of noise in strain signal.
Maps preserving Jordan and $\ast$-Jordan triple product on operator $\ast$-algebras

Let $\mathcal{A}$ and $\mathcal{B}$ be two operator $\ast$-rings such that $\mathcal{A}$ is prime. In this paper, we show that if the map $\Phi:\mathcal{A}\to\mathcal{B}$ is bijective and preserves Jordan or $\ast$-Jordan triple product, then it is additive. Moreover, if $\Phi$ preserves Jordan triple product, we prove the multiplicativity or anti-multiplicativity of $\Phi$. Finally, we show that if $\mathcal{A}$ and $\mathcal{B}$ are two prime operator $\ast$-algebras, $\Psi:\mathcal{A}\to\mathcal{B}$ is bijective and preserves $\ast$-Jordan triple product, then $\Psi$ is a $\mathbb{C}$-linear or conjugate $\mathbb{C}$-linear $\ast$-isomorphism.
Coding Advantage Optimization of Space-time-frequency Block Codes

In this article, we study the coding advantage of spacetime-frequency block codes (STFBCs). Since in MIMO-OFDMcoding there is the potential of exploiting space, time and frequencydiversities and as the frequency tones of OFDM modulation arerelatively substantial, the intricate structure of STFBCs makes italmost impossible to optimize the parameters of the code as thenumber of symbols increases in each block. Consequently, we investigatehow to optimize the code parameters independently toreduce the computational complexity. Furthermore, code permutationis an important part of the STFBCs. However, due to elaboratestructure of the STFBCs, it is very hard to calculate the optimumpermutation. Therefore, we put forth a technique to decompose thecoding advantage of the STFBCs. Using this technique, the permutationparameter can be easily introduced and optimized for STFBCs. We then design a novel STFBC based on any given STBC andapply the proposed scheme on the proposed STFBC to illustratethe application of this technique by designing the optimum permutationfor the code. Simulation results confirm that the proposedSTFBC outperforms the best existing STFBCs in the literature.
