A polarized 3He system is being developed for an experiment on time-reversal invariance in nuclear reactions. Spin-exchange optical pumping is employed to polarize the 3He nuclei. A quartz glass cell and a sapphire cell are used as containers for the 3He. With the pulsed neutron beam at High Energy Accelerator Research Organization (KEK), the polarizations of 3He were measured for the quartz glass cell and the sapphire cell at a 3He pressure of 3 atm by employing a frequencynarrowing technique based on an external-cavity and were found to be 0.538 ± 0.004stat ± 0.02sys and 0.627 ± 0.002stat ± 0.01sys, respectively.

We applied an S-matrix approach for numerical computations of some useful dependencies of the expected effects of simultaneous parity and time violation in polarized neutron transmission through a polarized target. The present analysis includes compensation of the pseudomagnetic interaction, an optimal target thickness, relative errors, and the energy dependences of the parity and the time violation effects. The analysis shows that a gaseous optically-pumped $^{131}$Xe target may be used for this experiment, as well as a $^{139}$LaAlO$_3$ target and that, in principle, the experimental method can be improved. Besides, our model calculations show that the ratio of the parity and time violation weak matrix element to the parity violation weak matrix element, $w_{PT}/w_P$ may be experimentally measured at a level of 10$^{-3}$. This, at least, is one order of magnitude more than expected. The present theoretical estimates are indirect, and many of them allow the possibility of $w_{PT}/w_P$ being large enough to be measured.

<P>An improved method for the study of time reversal (T) violation is described. It consists of measurement of the forward-backward asymmetry in direct γ-ray transitions after unpolarized neutron capture in p-wave resonances. The γ-ray detection system with 12 BGO crystals and the DAQ system based on flash ADC modules were tested.</P>
Development of a Neutron Polarizer with a Polarized 3He Spin Filter at Pohang Neutron Facility

We developed a neutron polarizer with a polarized 3He spin filter at the Pohang Neutron Facility. The 3He was polarized by using spin exchange with an optically pumped rubidium vapor. Neutron beam polarizations, as well as 3He polarizations, were measured with the neutron time-of-flight method using pulsed neutron beams. The neutron beam polarization was about 40 % for thermal neutrons (0.025 eV). The average polarization of 3He was obtained for a cylindrical quartz cell, 3 cm in diameter, 5.25 cm in length, 0.3 cm in wall thickness, and with a 3He pressure of about 1.3 atm, and < PHe >= 0.42 ± 0.03 ± 0.03.

For use as a neutron spin polarizer or analyzer in the neutron beam lines of the HANARO (High-flux Advanced Neutron Application ReactOr) nuclear research reactor, a <SUP>3</SUP>He polarizer was designed based on both a compact solenoid coil and a VBG (volume Bragg grating) diode laser with a narrow spectral linewidth of 25 GHz. The nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) signal was measured and analyzed using both a built-in cosine radio-frequency (RF) coil and a pick-up coil. Using a neutron transmission measurement, we estimated the polarization ratio of the <SUP>3</SUP>He cell as 18% for an optical pumping time of 8 hours.
Nuclear Data Production Facility Based on Electron Linac

The Pohang Neutron Facility, which is based on an electron linear accelerator, has been equipped with a new CAMAC data acquisition system consisting of a neutron-gamma separation circuit and a four-position sample changer for nuclear data production and for basic science experiments using neutrons. The system has been tested by measuring the neutron ux and the neutron total crosssections of natural W and Ti samples with the 6Li-ZnS (Ag) scintillator by using the neutron timeof- ight method. The measured neutron total cross-sections are compared with other measured data and the evaluation data in ENDF/B-VI. The present measurements are in generally good agreement with other data and the evaluated data.
