Optimum design of FRP box-girder bridges

Light weight superstructure is beneficial for bridges in remote areas and in emergency erection. In such weight sensitive applications, combination of fibre reinforced plastics (FRP) as material and box-girders as a structural system have great scope. This combination offers various options to tailor structure and its elements but this flexibility poses greater challenge in optimum design. In this paper a procedure is derived for a generalised optimum design of FRP box-girder bridges, using genetic algorithms (GA). The formulation of the optimum design problem in the form of objective function and constraints is presented. Size, configuration and topology optimization are done simultaneously. A few optimum design studies are carried out to check the performance of the developed procedure and to get trends in the optimum design which will be helpful to the new designers.
Women and Water Issues in Gujarat, India

The majority of villages of Gujarat, India, are in water stress conditions and conflicts over water are common. In reference to the strategic and practical gender needs, this paper delineates women's issues in water management. Based on empirical work done in 2003 in villages of Gujarat, the paper highlights women's roles as domestic water managers. It also discusses the institutional issues vis-a-vis women's involvement in water management. Participatory appraisal techniques encompassing survey of respondents, participant observation and focus group discussion were used to generate primary data. The findings suggest that rural women are the ones to suffer from the ever-increasing scarcity of water in rural areas, since providing domestic water is their domain. Access to water in rural areas is dominated by gender inequality on top of caste and class based discrimination. Importance of institutional assistance in enhancing women's status and reducing their drudgery is also exhibited in the paper. The paper recommends that women's productive and domestic uses of water be well acknowledged. Rural water allocation policy regimes should ensure equitable access to adequate water to all users. In order to allow both men and women to have their say and stake in water resource management, appropriate institutional and policy environment is needed.
A new low dielectric constant barium titanate - poly (methyl methacrylate) nanocomposite films

In the present investigation, nanocomposite films with poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) as a polymer matrix and barium titanate as a filler were prepared by solution casting method. Barium titanate nano particles were prepared using Ti(IV) triethanolaminato isopropoxide and hydrated barium hydroxide as precursors and tetra methyl ammonium hydroxide (TMAH) as a base. The nanocomposite films were characterized using XRD, FTIR, SEM and dielectric spectroscopy techniques. Dielectric measurements were performed in the frequency range 100 Hz-10 MHz. Dielectric constant of nanocomposites were found to depend on the frequency, the temperature and the filler fraction. Dissipation factors were also influenced by the frequency and the temperature but not much influenced by the filler fractions. The 10 wt% of BT-PMMA nanocomposite had the lowest dielectric constant of 3.58 and dielectric loss tangent of 0.024 at 1MHz and $25^{\circ}C$. The dielectric mixing model of Modified Lichtenecker showed the close fit to the experimental data.

The case when K is odd and K($${\geq_-}3$$) has been considered. In the later part some structures involving Lie-derivatives. exterior and co-derivatives have been studied.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Computational particle-fluid dynamics (CPFD) simulation was carried out to examine the influence of air versus O<SUB>2</SUB>/CO<SUB>2</SUB> as the fluidizing gas on the hydrodynamics of gas-solid flow in a cold-mode circulating fluidized bed. The CPFD simulation results were compared to the experimental data at constant superficial gas velocity, using air or mixed O<SUB>2</SUB>/CO<SUB>2</SUB> in three different concentrations as the fluidizing gas. The simulation results showed that the model successfully captured the experimentally observed trends. A detailed statistical analysis was carried out on the transient pressure data, and results were found to vary depending on whether air or combustion gases (O<SUB>2</SUB>/CO<SUB>2</SUB>) were used for fluidization. In all cases, the flow exhibits a typical core-annular flow structure, although for O<SUB>2</SUB>/CO<SUB>2</SUB> gas the solid volume fraction increases near the wall region.
