<P>Obesity has become a major health threat in developed countries. However, current medications for obesity are limited because of their adverse effects. Interest in natural products for the treatment of obesity is thus rapidly growing. Korean Medicine (KM) is characterized by the wide use of herbal formulas. However, the combination rule of herbal formulas in KM lacks experimental evidence. According to <I>Shennong's Classic of Materia Medica</I>, the earliest book of herbal medicine, <I>Veratrum nigrum</I> (VN) has antagonistic features against <I>Panax ginseng</I> (PG), and the PG-VN pair is strictly forbidden. In this study, we have shown the effects of PG, VN, and their combination on obesity in high-fat (HF) diet-induced obese mice and in 3T3-L1 cells. PG, VN, and PG-VN combination significantly reduced weight gain and the fat pad weight in HF diet-induced obese mice. They also significantly decreased lipid accumulation and the expressions of two major adipogenesis factors, PPAR<I><I>γ</I></I> and C/EBP<I><I>α</I></I>, in 3T3-L1 cells. In addition, the PG-VN combination had synergistic effects compared with the mixture of extracts of PG and VN on inhibition of PPAR<I><I>γ</I></I> and C/EBP<I><I>α</I></I> expressions at lower doses. These results indicate a new potential anti-obese pharmacotherapy and also provide scientific evidence supporting the usage of herbal combinations instead of mixtures in KM.</P>

<P>A facile strategy for preparing one-dimensional (1D) SnO<SUB>2</SUB> nanotube arrays embedded in a carbon layer (C–SnO<SUB>2</SUB> NTs) has been developed <I>via</I> a sol–gel method using polycarbonate (PC) as a template. The introduction of a carbon layer (carbonized from a PC membrane) at the top of SnO<SUB>2</SUB> nanotube arrays results in the SnO<SUB>2</SUB> nanotubes standing on the current collector and preserving their 1D structure without aggregation between each other, which enables their direct application to the anode of lithium-ion batteries. The binder- and carbon-free C–SnO<SUB>2</SUB> NTs as a self-supporting anode exhibits a stable and high reversible capacity of 500 mA h g<SUP>−1</SUP> at 0.1 A g<SUP>−1</SUP> after 40 cycles. The improved Li ion storage and stable capability are attributed to the 1D hollow structure, alleviating the large volume changes of SnO<SUB>2</SUB> and enhancing electron and Li ion diffusion transport in the nanotubes.</P> <P>Graphic Abstract</P><P>SnO<SUB>2</SUB> nanotube arrays embedded in a carbon layer were fabricated via a simple sol–gel method, which has shown good battery performance. <IMG SRC='http://pubs.rsc.org/services/images/RSCpubs.ePlatform.Service.FreeContent.ImageService.svc/ImageService/image/GA?id=c4nj01958j'> </P>

<P>The game artificial intelligence (A.I.) technique has been neglected by this industry but it is recognized as an important part of the game within the framework of genesis. This paper is concerned with game A.I., and describes how a game system can be used for the auto balancing of game difficulty to control the level of difficulty in a game based on the skill of the player. A game involves factor of difficulty control (FDC) and factor of users' adaptation (FUA). FDC is a factor that makes a game more difficult, and FUA is a factor that shows how well a player plays a game. We propose a dynamic difficulty controlling game system (DDCGS) using FDC and FUA to automatically control the game difficulty according to the skill of the player. Thus, DDCGS extends the game lifecycle and creates a more exciting game for the user by optimizing the player's game experience .</P>

Transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) has been used widely to treat patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma. However, this method can induce various adverse events caused by necrosis of the tumor itself or damage to nontumor tissues. In particular, neurologic side effects such as cerebral infarction and paraplegia, although rare, may cause severe sequelae and permanent disability. Detailed information regarding the treatment process and prognosis associated with this procedure is not yet available. We experienced a case of paraplegia that occurred after conducting TACE through the intercostal artery to treat hepatocellular carcinoma that had metastasized to the rib. In this case, TACE was attempted to relieve severe bone pain, which had persisted even after palliative radiotherapy. A sudden impairment of sensory and motor functions after TACE developed in the trunk below the level of the sternum and in both lower extremities. The patient subsequently received steroid pulse therapy along with supportive care and continuous rehabilitation. At the time of discharge the patient had recovered suffi ciently to enable him to walk by himself, although some paresthesia and spasticity remained. (Clin Mol Hepatol 2012;18:316-320)
