      • PROMOTING START UP OF UASB REACTORS BY ADDING OF WATER ABSORBING POLYMER

        ABSTRACTWe have developed a new approach to enhance granulation by adding water absorbing polymer (WAP) particles into the inoculated digested sludge. In this study, the effect of adding WAP on formation of anaerobic granular sludge was evaluated in lab-scale UASB reactors using two typical synthetic wastewater, i.e. glucose of volatile fatty acid (VFA) mixture solution. In addition, side by side with the lab-scale experiment, a pilot-scale experiment using the VFA mixture was carried out to evaluate the availability of accelerated start-up by adding WAP. The development of granular sludge was significantly enhanced by adding WAP. Granules developed on glucose and VFAs had high methanogenic activities and good settleability. From results of lab-scale experiment, the recommended dosage of WAP was about 750 mg/l of reactor volume. The results, pilot-scale experiment, indicated the availability of accelerated start-up adding WAP.

        Pairing Symmetry in the Ordered Honeycomb Network Superconductor BaPtSb

        We investigate the pairing symmetry of the ordered honeycomb network superconductor BaPtSb with broken inversion symmetry. There is a preliminary μSR measurement report below critical temperature (Tc) suggesting the superconducting state with time-reversal symmetry breaking (TRSB). In this paper, first principles calculation is performed and we find the effective tight-binding model which reproduces the Fermi surfaces consisting of Pt 5d<SUB>x2-y2</SUB> , 5d<SUB>xy</SUB> and Sb 5p<SUB>z</SUB> orbitals mainly. In order to discuss the pairing symmetry of BaPtSb we classify the gap functions based on crystal point group and solve the gap equations, and the condensation energies are calculated. Consequently, on the most dominant Fermi surface, chiral d-wave state is most stable among the TRSB states.

        Adsorption of phosphate using calcined Mg3–Fe layered double hydroxides in a fixed-bed column study

        A granular calcined Mg3–Fe LDH adsorbent was prepared by using co-precipitation method under low super saturation condition. The characteristic of the adsorbent was analyzed by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The continuous phosphate adsorption experiments were conducted in a glass fix-bed column. The results showed an increase in bed height and initial phosphate concentration improves the phosphate adsorption capacity probably due to the longer bed height allowing a longer empty bed contact time (EBCT) between the adsorbent and the adsorbate, meanwhile the higher initial phosphate concentration provides a higher driving force for the mass transfer; however, an increase in flow rate inhibits the phosphate adsorption due to the higher flow rate reduced the interaction time of the adsorbent in solution. The bed depth service time (BDST) model was found to predict the breakthrough curve well at a 0.024 L/h flow rate and 10 mg/L initial phosphate concentration using linear regression analysis. The Clark model was found to give a best fit to experiment data under various bed height, flow rate and initial phosphate concentration, followed by the Thomas and Yoon–Nelson models using non-linear regression analysis. The reusability experiment was conducted using actual anaerobic sludge filtrate as adsorbate. The results indicated that the adsorbent still had good selectivity in an anions coexisting solution, high phosphate adsorption capacity, and acceptable desorption efficiency.

        An Alternative Approach to the Fermentation of Sweet Sorghum Juice into Biopolymer of Poly-β-hydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) by Newly Isolated, Bacillus aryabhattai PKV01

        This work revealed for the first time the possible use of a newly isolated Bacillus aryabhattai PKV01 for poly-β-hydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) production from fermentative sweet sorghum juice. Its growth and PHA production were investigated under different pH and nitrogen sources. Medium composition was optimized using statistical tools. The highest biomass and PHA content were reached at pH 6.5 with the use of urea. Plackett-Burman design was then applied to test the relative importance of medium components and process variables on cell growth and PHA production. Cell growth and PHAs production were affected by total sugar and urea and were subjected to optimize the sorghum juice medium using response surface methodology (RSM) via central composite design (CCD). The predicted optimal culture composition was achieved. Maximum dry cell weight and PHAs were obtained using a flask and almost double the amount was achieved using a bioreactor. After PHA recovery,the structure and thermal properties were characterised and revealed to be similar to the standard of poly-β-hydroxybutyrate (PHB).

        Clinical Outcomes of Biliary Drainage during a Neoadjuvant Therapy for Pancreatic Cancer: Metal versus Plastic Stents

        Neoadjuvant chemotherapy/neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (NAC/NACRT) can be performed in patients with pancreatic cancer to improve survival. We aimed to clarify the clinical outcomes of biliary drainage with a metal stent (MS) or a plastic stent (PS) during NAC/NACRT. Between October 2013 and April 2016, 96 patients with pancreatic cancer were registered for NAC/NACRT. Of these, 29 patients who underwent biliary drainage with MS or PS before NAC/NACRT and a subsequent pancreatoduodenectomy were retrospectively analyzed with regard to patient characteristics, preoperative recurrent biliary obstruction rate, NAC/NACRT delay or discontinuation rate, and operative characteristics. The median age of the patients was 67 years. NAC and NACRT were performed in 14 and 15 patients, respectively, and MS and PS were used in 17 and 12 patients, respectively. Recurrent biliary obstruction occurred in 6% and 83% of the patients in the MS and PS groups, respectively (p<0.001). NAC/NACRT delay was observed in 35% and 50% of the patients in the MS and PS groups, respectively (p=0.680). NAC/NACRT discontinuation was observed in 12% and 17% of the patients in the MS and PS groups, respectively (p=1.000). The operative time in the MS group tended to be longer than that in the PS group (625 minutes vs 497 minutes, p=0.051), and the operative blood loss volumes and postoperative adverse event rates were not different between the two groups. MS was better than PS from the viewpoint of preventing recurrent biliary obstruction, although MS was similar to PS with regards to perioperative outcomes. (Gut Liver 2020;14:269-273)
