Nerophysiological Mechanisms of Acupuncture Analgesia

Proceedings of International Symposium on East-West Medicine, Seoul. 27-35,1999.-Acupuncture stimulation evokes powerful analgesic feeects in various species of animals and in man. It is important to know which peripheral nerves convey the acupuncture information for producing analgesic effects. In addition, as one of the specific action of the acupuncture, it has been reported that maximunm effects are produced some time after the onset of the stimulation and the effects still remains after the cessation of its stimulation. Above-mentioned specific action, which is usually sustained for some minutes or even some days, may not be explained by simple inhibitory neural mechanisms. Therefore, it has been proposed that the acupuncture effects are elicited by the activation of the endogenous oioid system. However, a clear mechanism of analgesic effects induced by acupuncture is still nuknown. The present speech shows the summary of the recent studies about peripheral and central mechanisms of acupuncture-induced antinociceptive effects obtained mainly from rat experimets. The main topics are as follows: 1. Characteristics of meridian points 2. Afferentnerve information evoked by acupuncture stimulation 3. Inhibitory mechanisms in the CNS 4. Endogenous antinocicptive substances concerned with acupuncture analgesia 5. Descending antinociceptive effects
Novel Soft Chemical Synthesis Methods of Ceramic Materials

<P>We report novel soft chemical synthesis method, solid hydratethermal reaction (SHR) method as a new soft chemistry. This method is very simple and can synthesize the ceramic materials just by storing the mixture of raw materials added a small amount of water in a reactor at low temperature below 373 K. For example, nanosize YVO4 (under 100 nm in diameter) was obtained using the SHR method.</P>

<P>Lithium orthophosphate Li3PO4 nanoparticles were synthesized through a water assisted solid state reaction (WASSR) method. The nanoparticles obtained in this study adopt a stable orthorhombic structure (beta-type), which is a low temperature phase, in a single phase with high crystallinity. The Li3PO4 nanoparticles have a granular particle morphology and the particle size is less than 50 nm.</P>

<P>Single phase of orthorhombic Li2SiO3 was synthesized via a novel soft-chemical synthesis method, water assisted solid state reaction method at 343-353K for 60 min. The crystal structure of the samples was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) observation revealed that the estimated size of the particles is 50-200 nm. The XRD patterns and SEM images were compared to those of samples by a conventional solid state method at 1173K for 4 h. (C) 2017 The Ceramic Society of Japan. All rights reserved.</P>

The inhibitory effect of dl-puerol A as but-2-enolide isolated from Sophora japonica was investigated on copper ion-induced protein oxidative modification in vitro. It inhibited copper-induced protein oxidative modification. However, its inhibitory effect was a little weaker than that of $dl-{\alpha}-tocopherol$ as an antioxidant. The results demonstrated that dl-puerol A, one of but-2-enolides, might be of use in the oxidative stress.
EFFECTS OF RIVER DISCHARGE ON GROWTH OF PERIPHYTON IN SAND RIVER

Periphyton is known to be one of major primary producers for river ecosystem. While the growth of periphyton usually observed on the stone surface in gravel river, the large growth of periphyton is sometimes seen even in sand river with relatively small river discharge. In the present study, field observations and numerical simulations were performed to investigate the growth of periphyton in sand river. In the field observation, the growth of periphyton on fixed sand bed was measured weekly. The results of the field observations show that the large growth of periphyton occurs in sand river until the bed material sands have not moved. An integrated numerical simulation model is presented to describe the growth of periphyton at observed river reach, and a series of numerical simulations were performed to study the effect of river discharge on growth of periphyton in the sand river. The results of the numerical simulations show that the net primary production of periphyton decreases with the river discharge. These results suggest that the reduction of river discharge at ordinary water stage strongly affects the primary productivity of periphyton even in sand river.
New Processing of LED Phosphors

In order to synthesize LED phosphor materials, we have applied three novel synthesis techniques, "melt synthesis", "fluidized bed synthesis" and "vapor-solid hybrid synthesis", in contrast with the conventional solid state reaction technique. These synthesis techniques are also a general and powerful tool for rapid screening and improvements of new phosphor materials.
