Barriers to Derivative Accounting Disclosure: The Case of Vietnamese Firms

NGUYEN, Hanh Thi Hong,TRAN, Ngoc Minh,NGUYEN, Quyen Le Hoang Thuy To Korea Distribution Science Association 2020 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.7 No.10

This paper explores the barriers to derivative accounting disclosures in Vietnamese companies and ranks their relative importance for effective and efficient remedies. The Delphi technique was applied to get agreement of panel of experts on the measurement of factors hindering disclosure. Unstructured questionnaires were first sent to twelve experts who had both practical experience and academic knowledge in the field to get ideas on the obstructions to derivatives disclosure. The structured questionnaire was designed to get their agreement on barriers to derivative accounting disclosures. The data analysis with mean, median, mode, standard deviation, and quartile has been implemented to ensure the unanimity. Market-related factors, legislation, accountants' attributes, managers' attributes, information technology and communication, and on-site training were the six major obstacles agreed upon by the experts during their in-depth interviews. Then, these factors were ranked by applying the analytical hierarchy process (AHP). The findings confirmed the priority of information technology and communication, which held the greatest weight. Legislation ranked second, followed by market-related factors and on-site training, which explained the impediments to derivatives disclosure. Managers' and accountants' attributes had the least contribution to the barriers to derivative disclosures. The results have important implications for actions to enhance corporate derivative disclosures in Vietnam.

      • Transferrin-conjugated pH-sensitive platform for effective delivery of porous palladium nanoparticles and paclitaxel in cancer treatment

        Nguyen, Hanh Thuy,Soe, Zar Chi,Yang, Kwan Yeol,Phung, Cao Dai,Nguyen, Lan Thi-Trinh,Jeong, Jee-Heon,Jin, Sung Giu,Choi, Han-Gon,Ku, Sae Kwang,Yong, Chul Soon,Kim, Jong Oh Elsevier 2019 Colloids and surfaces. B, Biointerfaces Vol.176 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Porous palladium (Pd) nanoparticles have garnered great research attention due to their potential anticancer activity and photothermal effect. In this study, a transferrin-conjugated pH-sensitive platform (Tf-PPP), comprising porous Pd nanoparticles (PdNPs) and paclitaxel (PTX), was successfully developed for combined chemo-phototherapy. Tf-PPPs have a small size of 164.6 ± 8.7 nm, PDI of 0.278 ± 0.029, and negative charge (-13.2 ± 1.8 mV). Poly(acrylic acid)-poly(ethylene oxide) (PAA-PEO), a pH sensitive polymer, was used to achieve pH-dependent drug release from nanoparticles. Transferrin (Tf) conjugated on the surface of nanoplatforms could enhance the cellular uptake and prolong nanoparticle accumulation in the tumor site. The combination of phototherapy induced by PdNPs and chemotherapeutic agent (PTX) could exhibit synergistic anticancer activities. Consistent findings were observed in both <I>in vitro</I> experiments including cytotoxicity, live/dead assay, and assessment of apoptotic protein levels, and <I>in vivo</I> antitumor study in MCF-7 tumor-bearing mice, with results decreasing in the following order: Tf-PPPs + NIR > Tf-PPPs > PPPs + NIR > PPPs > PTX > PdNPs. These findings suggest that the administration of Tf-PPPs, followed by NIR irradiation could be a promising strategy in the treatment of cancer.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Transferrin-conjugated pH-sensitive platform was prepared for delivery of porous palladium nanoparticles and paclitaxel. </LI> <LI> The formulation exhibited higher drug release profiles at the acid environment with NIR exposure. </LI> <LI> <I>In vitro</I> studies showed high uptake and high cytotoxicity, especially in combination with NIR laser treatment. </LI> <LI> <I>In vivo</I> antitumor study showed synergistic anticancer activity with minimal adverse effects. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>Transferrin-conjugated pH-sensitive platform for effective delivery of porous palladium nanoparticles and paclitaxel.</P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

      • An Empirial Study on Vietnam’s Trade Faclilitation in the Digital Economy

Thanh Huong Vu(Thanh Huong Vu ),Thi Thuy Hanh Lam(Thi Thuy Hanh Lam ),Ha Phuong Nguyen(Ha Phuong Nguyen ) The International Academy of Global Business and T 2023 The International Academy of Global Business and T Vol.19 No.2

Purpose - Vietnam is among the fastest growing digital economies in the Southeast Asian region, and has made enormous efforts to adopt digital measures to facilitate trade. The paper aims to assess Vietnam’s performance of digital trade facilitation and estimate the impact of digital trade facilitation on Vietnam’s exports to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Design/Methodology/Approach - Vietnam’s implementation of digital trade facilitation is assessed through a constructed framework based on two groups of indicators, including Information Availability and Formalities Automation extracted from the OECD Trade Facilitation database. Further, a gravity model was adopted to estimate the impact of digital trade facilitation on Vietnam’s exports. Findings - The results show that Vietnam performs a slightly better than the average level of ASEAN countries. However, Vietnam’s implementation of digital trade facilitation tends to be ỉmproving at a slower rate than other ASEAN countries’ implementations, as well as the country’s overall implementation of other trade facilitation. The paper is among leading studies to quantify the impact of digital trade facilitation on Vietnam’s exports to ASEAN countries, and finds that if Vietnam and ASEAN countries increase trade facilitation through Information Availability measures by 1%, Vietnam’s exports will increase more than proportionately by 1.29% and 1.01%, respectively. Meanwhile, the digitalization of trade formalities so far has had no effect on Vietnam’s exports to this region. Research Implications - Vietnam should place priority on enhancing automation in trade-related administrative procedures, especially in customs procedures. Furthermore, it should pay more attention to promote the electronic publication of trade-related information, enhance the transparency of government policymaking, and increase the quality of enquiry points.

DANG, Thuy Anh,HO, My Hanh,HO, Thi Dieu Anh,NGUYEN, Thi Thanh Hoa Korea Distribution Science Association 2022 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.9 No.10

In the current fast-growing market economy, the accounting-outsourcing trend of small and medium-sized enterprises is on the increase. Studies from both foreign and domestic sources have shown that many factors influence this decision. However, each country has different economic and political characteristics, so these factors and their degree of impact on accounting outsourcing also vary. This study aimed to determine the factors affecting the decision to outsource accounting activities of small and medium transport enterprises in Vietnam. A survey of 384 transport SMEs was conducted using the convenience sampling method. A personal interview with owners/managers/CFOs in 3 major cities of Vietnam based on a research review was conducted. The model examines the influence of many independent variables on accounting outsourcing. The multilinear regression analysis shows that the higher the Assets Specificity, the lower the degree of accounting outsourcing. In addition, the degree of outsourcing is positively and significantly related to frequency and trust in accountants. Besides, when we include control variables such as gender, administrative level, firm size, company age, education, and experience into the model. The results show that small and medium enterprises with limited resources should switch from the traditional internal accounting method to a professional accountant with external knowledge. Based on this study, the author proposes several implications for the accounting outsourcing of small and medium-sized transport enterprises in Vietnam to be more effective. Finally, this study also contributes to the basic knowledge of accounting outsourcing.

      • Violation of Bans on Tobacco Advertising and Promotion at Points of Sale in Viet Nam: Trend from 2009 - 2015

Le, Thi Thanh Huong,Tran, Khanh Long,Phung, Xuan Son,Do, Phuc Huyen,Phan, Thuy Linh,Nguyen, Ngoc Bich,Nguyen, Xuan Lam,Le, Vu Anh,Tran, Thi Tuyet-Hanh Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2016 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.17 No.no.sup1

Comprehensive bans on tobacco advertising and promotion were introduced through tobacco control legislation in Viet Nam, but it has been established that violations of the bans are very common. This study was conducted to explore the trend in violations of bans on tobacco advertising and promotion at points of sale in Viet Nam in the past six years and to explore any differences in the violation situations before and after the Law on Tobacco Control came into effect on 1st May 2013. Quantitative data were collected through observation of violations of the bans on tobacco advertising and promotion at points of sale in 10 provinces throughout Viet Nam in four survey rounds (2009, 2010, 2011, and 2015). Variation in violation prevalence over time was examined by chi-square test using a Bonferini method. Binary logistic regression was employed to identify the factors that may have influences on different types of violation. A level of significance of p<0.05 was used for all tests in this article. The most common form of violation was the display of more than one pack/one carton of a cigarette brand. Violation of bans on tobacco advertising increased while violations on promotion ban and on displaying tobacco decreased through time. Some factors associated with the tobacco advertising and promotion bans included surveyed years, types of points of sale, regions and areas where the points of sale were located. The enforcement of the bans did not improve even after the issuance and the enactment of the Law on Tobacco Control. This suggests that the monitoring and enforcement of bans on tobacco advertising and promotion at points of sale should be strengthened. Penalties should be strictly applied for violators as indicated in the current tobacco control legislation.
