ISO 10993 biological evaluation of novel hemostatic powder – 4SEAL®

Background: Hemostasis plays a crucial role during every surgery allowing for a bloodless operating field. Fast and effective surgery leads to a reduced risk of postoperative complications. One of the latest methods for achieving homeostasis is using natural polysaccharide-based hemostatic powders. The study aimed to evaluate the biocompatibility according to the ISO 10993 standards of 4SEAL® Hemostatic powder. Methods: Chemical characterization (Headspace GC-MS, GC-MS, and ICP-MS), cytotoxicity, genotoxicity (MLA and AMES), endotoxin contamination, sensitization potential, intracutaneous reactivity, acute and subacute systemic toxicity with implantation, and pyrogenicity were evaluated to investigate the biocompatibility of the 4SEAL® Hemostatic powder. Studies were conducted according to ISO 10993 standards. Results: The biocompatibility requirements according to ISO 10993-1 for 4SEAL® Hemostatic powder were met. Based on the conducted in-vitro studies, 4SEAL® Hemostatic powder shows a non-cytotoxicity and non-mutagenic potential. Also, the results of in vivo studies of 4SEAL® Hemostatic powder shows no signs of toxicity, nonsensitizing, non-irritating, and no pyrogenicity potential. In the chemical characterization of 4Seal® Hemostatic Powder, no compounds were identified above Analytical Evaluation Threshold (AET) and no elements with concentrations higher than element-specific PDE [μg/day] were detected. Conclusions: 4SEAL® Hemostatic powder is a promising new hemostatic agent with a wide range of potential applications and excellent biocompatibility.
The Influence of Incudostapedial Joint Separation on the Middle Ear Transfer Function

Objectives. One of the risks in middle ear surgery is high frequency hearing loss. It is believed that manipulations on the middle ear ossicles with the instruments may cause overstimulation of the inner ear and damage of the hear cells. Controversy arises whether temporary separation of the ossicles has any impact on middle ear transfer function and hearing threshold after surgery. The aim of the study is to evaluate the influence of incudostapedial joint (ISJ) separa- tion on middle ear function in an experimental model. Methods. With the use of single point laser Doppler vibrometer (LDV) stapes velocity in the intact chain and after ISJ sep- aration was measured in 5 fresh human cadaver temporal bones. Results. In all cases there was a decrease in stapes velocity after ISJ separation. Mead stapes velocity was reduced for 1 dB in 800 Hz to 9 dB in frequencies above 1,000 Hz. The decrease of velocity was greater in higher frequencies. Conclusion. Separation of the ISJ does not reduce significantly the middle ear function.

<P>It was shown recently by Conti, Rordam and Szymanski that there exist endomorphisms lambda(u) of the Cuntz algebra O-n such that lambda(u) (F-n) subset of F-n but u is not an element of F-n and a question was raised if for such a u there must always exist a unitary v is an element of F-n with lambda(u) | F-n = lambda(v) | F-n. In the present paper, we answer this question to the negative. To this end, we analyze the structure of such endomorphisms lambda(u) for which the relative commutant lambda(u) (F-n)' boolean AND F-n is finite dimensional. (C) 2016 Elsevier Inc. Influence of ion irradiation on the magnetic properties of Fe/Cr multilayers

The in uence of Ar-ion irradiation on the microstructure and magnetic properties of Fe/Cr multilayers is studied. An increase in the interface roughness of Fe/Cr multilayers, caused by irradiation with 200 keV Ar ions whose dose exceeds 5 1012 Ar/cm2, is clearly seen by conversion electron Mossbauer spectroscopy (CEMS). This modication of the microstructure induces distinct changes in the magnetization reversal (an increase in remanence magnetization and a decrease in saturation eld), and greatly reduces the giant magnetoresistance (GMR) eect on increasing the irradiation dose. An enhanced immunity of the GMR eect to the ion irradiation on increasing the thickness of Cr layers, as well as correlation between the changes of GMR and the antiferromagnetically coupled fraction, suggests that the main eect responsible for the decrease in GMR is the formation of pinholes. The temperature dependence of remanence magnetization conrms increases in pinhole density and size during implantation. However, for doses exceeding 2 1013 Ar/cm2, volume intermixing seems to be a dominant mechanism responsible for the further degradation of GMR and the antiferromagnetic interlayer exchange coupling.
The Weyl group of the Cuntz algebra

The Weyl group of the Cuntz algebra O<SUB>n</SUB> is investigated. This is (isomorphic to) the group of polynomial automorphisms λ<SUB>u</SUB> of O<SUB>n</SUB>, namely those induced by unitaries u that can be written as finite sums of words in the canonical generating isometries S<SUB>i</SUB> and their adjoints. A necessary and sufficient algorithmic combinatorial condition is found for deciding when a polynomial endomorphism λ<SUB>u</SUB> restricts to an automorphism of the canonical diagonal MASA. Some steps towards a general criterion for invertibility of λ<SUB>u</SUB> on the whole of O<SUB>n</SUB> are also taken. A condition for verifying invertibility of a certain subclass of polynomial endomorphisms is given. First examples of polynomial automorphisms of O<SUB>n</SUB> not inner related to those induced by unitaries from the core UHF subalgebra are exhibited, for every n≥2. In particular, the image of the Weyl group in the outer automorphism group of O<SUB>n</SUB> is strictly larger than the image of the restricted Weyl group analyzed in previous papers. Results about the action of the Weyl group on the spectrum of the diagonal are also included.
Myocardial Infarction Type 4b in Human Immunodeficiency Virus-Infected Patient

We report a case of a 52-year-old human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected male patient receiving combined antiretroviral therapy(cART), who presented with acute ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). He was properly treated (e.g., prescribed anti-coagulationdrugs: aspirin, clopidogrel, enoxaparin) and discharged. After 1.5 months, another STEMI related with in-stent thrombosis took place. ThecART scheme was altered, resulting in no further cardiac events in the follow-up period, with undetectable levels of HIV ribonucleic acid. This case highlights the association between HIV infection and the specific drugs of cART, and the risk of cardiovascular disease develop -ment.
