Variation in the vertebral levels of the origins of the abdominal aorta branches: a retrospective imaging study

        Jehad Fataftah,Justin Z,Amarin,Haya H,Suradi,Maher T,Hadidi,Amjad T,Shatarat,Abdel Rahman A,Al Manasra,Samah Shahin,Darwish H,Badran 대한해부학회 2020 Anatomy & Cell Biology Vol.53 No.3

Our aim was to investigate the variation in the vertebral levels of the origins of the celiac artery, superior and inferior mesenteric arteries, paired renal arteries, and common iliac arteries. We conducted a retrospective imaging study in a large public secondary hospital on a nonrandom sample of 227 participants. We consecutively included adult patients who had undergone computed tomography angiography of the abdomen and excluded patients with a history of any vertebral abnormality or whose images revealed evidence of a vertebral abnormality or a congenital anomaly of any of the branches of the abdominal aorta. The primary outcome was the frequency distribution of the vertebral levels of the landmarks. The secondary outcomes were the intercorrelations of the vertebral levels of the landmarks and their relationships with age, sex, weight, height, and body mass index. The celiac artery originated at T11/T12-L1/L2, followed by the superior mesenteric artery at T12-L2, the paired renal arteries at T12/L1-L2/L3, the inferior mesenteric artery at L2-L4, and the common iliac arteries at L3-L5. The vertebral levels of the landmarks were positively intercorrelated and stronger between proximate pairs. In addition, the vertebral levels of the landmarks were related to age, but not sex, weight, height, or body mass index. The intercorrelations suggest that a considerable proportion of the variation is accounted for by ‘trickle-down’ variation; variation in the vertebral level of a proximal landmark results in variation in the vertebral level of the immediate distal landmark. The overarching parameter remains unidentified.

Quality and Probiotic Lactic Acid Bacteria Diversity of Rabbit Meat Bekasam-Fermented Meat

        Eka Wulandari,Husmy Yurmiati,Toto Subroto,Kusmajadi Suradi 한국축산식품학회 2020 한국축산식품학회지 Vol.40 No.3

Rabbit meat bekasam is a traditional fermentation product from Indonesia. This study aimed to determine the chemical and microbiological characteristics of rabbit meat bekasam during the fermentation process in order to isolate, characterize (in vitro and in vivo), and identify lactic acid bacteria (LAB) as the probiotic candidate. The chemical contents of bekasam on 7-day fermentation were investigated in explorative and experimental methods in a completely randomized design. A proximate analysis reported a decrease in the moisture content, fat and carbohydrate content, and an increase in protein content. Also, lactic acid content was increased from 0.48% to 1.12%, and pH was decreased from 5.3 to 4.3. Other properties indicated different values, such as bacteria (2.75×106 to 4.45×107 CFU/g), total LAB (3.82×106 to 4.67×108 CFU/g), total yeast (9.89×106 to 3.82×108 CFU/g) and total mould (4.34×101 to 4.86×103 CFU/g). The experiment produced nine LAB isolates, including two probiotics subjected to further 16S rRNA gene analysis, which indicated that Lactobacillus buchneri was the potential probiotic isolate. After being tested on BALB/c mice, L. buchneri could improve the immune system by inhibiting the growth of Coliform and Salmonella.

Refining stream ecosystem evaluation: A novel approach using the family ecological index (FEIS)

        Nurhafizah-Azwa A.S.,Mohd Ali Zalina,Mohd Suradi Nur Riza 한국응용곤충학회 2024 Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology Vol.27 No.1

The use of ecological indices based on benthic macroinvertebrate population for streams ecosystem quality assessment receives great attention. Streams in general have high variability characteristics; thus, using a single index used for the whole stream stretch renders less accurate readings. Therefore, this study was conducted to produce an ecological index using benthic macroinvertebrates as a bioindicator for a clean stream ecosystem. In this study, 42 recreational streams throughout Peninsular Malaysia were sampled and 663 units of water and benthic macroinvertebrates samples were analysed. Three phyla, 19 orders, 117 families and 55,410 macro invertebrate individuals were recorded. Benthic macroinvertebrate data were analysed using existing indices such as Shannon Diversity Index (H’), biotic indices (BMWP THAI and FBI) and WQI to analyse water quality. Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) was used to evaluate the strength of water quality and physical habitat in determining benthic macroinvertebrate community structure. Next, Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was used to produce new weights. Based on the similarities and dissimilarities of each family in their ecological functions, the components were truncated into only three significant groups with respective weights and a new ecological index, namely Family Ecological Index for Streams (FEIS). From the FEIS values calculation, three scales which are 2.11 to 3.00 (first class: excellent ecosystem), 1.36 to 2.10 (second class: healthy ecosystem), and 0.00 to 1.35 (third class: moderately healthy ecosystem) were obtained. It is found that FEIS is capable of exhibiting variations in stream quality even within clean streams and able to detect early deterioration in streams which is highly useful for management stakeholders to manage recreational streams in Malaysia. The new datadriven approach in the development of FEIS in this study can be applied to other rivers and the difference in the weights determination as well as formulation obtained can be observed.
