      • Large Margin Discriminative Semi-Markov Model for Phonetic Recognition

        Sungwoong Kim,Sungrack Yun,Yoo, C. D. IEEE 2011 IEEE - ACM Transactions on Audio, Speech, and Lang Vol.19 No.7

<P>This paper considers a large margin discriminative semi-Markov model (LMSMM) for phonetic recognition. The hidden Markov model (HMM) framework that is often used for phonetic recognition assumes only local statistical dependencies between adjacent observations, and it is used to predict a label for each observation without explicit phone segmentation. On the other hand, the semi-Markov model (SMM) framework allows simultaneous segmentation and labeling of sequential data based on a segment-based Markovian structure that assumes statistical dependencies among all the observations within a phone segment. For phonetic recognition which is inherently a joint segmentation and labeling problem, the SMM framework has the potential to perform better than the HMM framework at the expense of slight increase in computational complexity. The SMM framework considered in this paper is based on a non-probabilistic discriminant function that is linear in the joint feature map which attempts to capture long-range statistical dependencies among observations. The parameters of the discriminant function are estimated by a large margin learning framework for structured prediction. The parameter estimation problem in hand leads to an optimization problem with many margin constraints, and this constrained optimization problem is solved using a stochastic gradient descent algorithm. The proposed LMSMM outperformed the large margin discriminative HMM in the TIMIT phonetic recognition task.</P>

      • Task-Specific Image Partitioning

        Sungwoong Kim,Nowozin, S.,Kohli, P.,Yoo, C. D. IEEE 2013 IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON IMAGE PROCESSING - Vol.22 No.2

<P>Image partitioning is an important preprocessing step for many of the state-of-the-art algorithms used for performing high-level computer vision tasks. Typically, partitioning is conducted without regard to the task in hand. We propose a task-specific image partitioning framework to produce a region-based image representation that will lead to a higher task performance than that reached using any task-oblivious partitioning framework and existing supervised partitioning framework, albeit few in number. The proposed method partitions the image by means of correlation clustering, maximizing a linear discriminant function defined over a superpixel graph. The parameters of the discriminant function that define task-specific similarity/dissimilarity among superpixels are estimated based on structured support vector machine (S-SVM) using task-specific training data. The S-SVM learning leads to a better generalization ability while the construction of the superpixel graph used to define the discriminant function allows a rich set of features to be incorporated to improve discriminability and robustness. We evaluate the learned task-aware partitioning algorithms on three benchmark datasets. Results show that task-aware partitioning leads to better labeling performance than the partitioning computed by the state-of-the-art general-purpose and supervised partitioning algorithms. We believe that the task-specific image partitioning paradigm is widely applicable to improving performance in high-level image understanding tasks.</P>

Histological Features of the Testis in the Long-beaked Common Dolphin from Korean Waters

        Kim, Juhwan,Jang, Sungwoong,Jeon, Yubyeol,An, Du Hae,Kim, Doo Nam,Hyun, Sang-Hwan,Moon, Changjong The Korean Society of Embryo Transfer 2013 한국동물생명공학회지 Vol.28 No.1

The present study examined the histological characteristics of adult testis in the long-beaked common dolphin (Delphinus capensis) from Korean waters and the localization of DEAD-box polypeptide 4 (DDX4; a germ cell marker) and vimentin (a Sertoli cell marker) expression in the dolphin testis compared with that in terrestrial mammals, including dogs and rats. The seminiferous tubules of dolphin testis have very small or completely closed lumens, and spermatogenic cells and Sertoli cells within the tubules cannot be differentiated. Immunohistochemical analysis showed that, in the dolphin testis, DDX4- and vimentin-positive cells were scattered extensively within the tubule, whereas in the dog and rat testis, DDX4 immunoreactivity was localized in spermatogenic cells of the adluminal compartment, and vimentin immunoreactivity was localized in Sertoli cells of the basal compartment in the seminiferous epithelium. These results suggest that the histological characteristics of the seminiferous tubules in the dolphin testis differ from those of terrestrial species.

Histology and lectin histochemistry in the vomeronasal organ of Korean native cattle, Bos taurus coreanae

        Sungwoong Jang,Bohye Kim,Joong-Sun Kim,Changjong Moon 한국동물생명공학회(구 한국동물번식학회) 2021 Journal of Animal Reproduction and Biotechnology Vol.36 No.4

The vomeronasal organ (VNO) is critical for reproduction and social behavior in ruminants, including cattle. The present study examined the structure of the VNO and its epithelial cells in neonatal and adult Korean native cattle (Hanwoo), Bos taurus coreanae , using immunohistochemistry and lectin histochemistry. Histologically, the VNO comprised two types of epithelia: medial vomeronasal sensory (VSE) and lateral vomeronasal non-sensory epithelia (VNSE). Numerous blood vessels and nerve bundles were observed within the vomeronasal cartilage encased lamina propria. Immunohistochemistry revealed high expression level of protein gene product9.5 and moderate expression level of olfactory marker protein in the neuroreceptor cells of the VSE and occasionally in some ciliated cells of the VNSE in both neonates and adults. The properties of the glycoconjugates in the VNO were investigated using 21 lectins, most of which were expressed at varied intensities in the VSE and VNSE, as well as in the lamina propria. Several lectins exhibited variations in their intensities and localization between neonatal and adult VNOs. This study is the first descriptive lectin histochemical examination of the VNO of Korean native cattle with a focus on lectin histochemistry, confirming that the VNO of Korean native cattle is differentiated during postnatal development.

      • A Magnetically Controlled Soft Microrobot Steering a Guidewire in a Three-Dimensional Phantom Vascular Network

        Jeon, Sungwoong,Hoshiar, Ali Kafash,Kim, Kangho,Lee, Seungmin,Kim, Eunhee,Lee, Sunkey,Kim, Jin-young,Nelson, Bradley J.,Cha, Hyo-Jeong,Yi, Byung-Ju,Choi, Hongsoo Mary Ann Liebert, Inc., publishers 2018 Soft robotics Vol.2018 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>Magnetically actuated soft robots may improve the treatment of disseminated intravascular coagulation. Significant progress has been made in the development of soft robotic systems that steer catheters. A more challenging task, however, is the development of systems that steer sub-millimeter-diameter guidewires during intravascular treatments; a novel microrobotic approach is required for steering. In this article, we develop a novel, magnetically actuated, soft microrobotic system, increasing the steerability of a conventional guidewire. The soft microrobot is attached to the tip of the guidewire, and it is magnetically steered by changing the direction and intensity of an external magnetic field. The microrobot is fabricated via replica molding and features a soft body made of polydimethylsiloxane, two permanent magnets, and a microspring. We developed a mathematical model mapping deformation of the soft microrobot using a feed-forward approach toward steering. Then, we used the model to steer a guidewire. The angulation of the microrobot can be controlled from 21.1° to 132.7° by using a magnetic field of an intensity of 15 mT. Steerability was confirmed by two-dimensional <I>in vitro</I> tracking. Finally, a guidewire with the soft microrobot was tested by using a three-dimensional (3D) phantom of the coronary artery to verify steerability in 3D space.</P>

Vol.24 No.3

Vendor managed inventory (VMI) is known as an effective business strategy enabling companies to reduce their costs, mitigate risks, and increase productivity. However, in reality, many small and medium enterprises are facing difficulties in successfully implementing the VMI service due to lack of resources and absence of communication with their customers. Therefore, this paper introduces a case implementing the VMI service operated by a 3PL provider (3PL-driven VMI service) with logistics service know-how and infrastructure. We introduce a sensor manufacturing company as a case and show its performance change in terms of flow of information between the manufacturer and its customers, operational costs and quantitative aspects before and after the 3PL-driven VMI service is implemented. This case study also show that the service is beneficial to both the 3PL provider and customers as well as the manufacturer.
