<P>Sorghum extract was incorporated into zein nanofibers by an electrospinning technique to investigate its effect on the morphologies and thermal properties of zein nanofibers. The as-prepared zein/sorghum extract nanofibers were characterized by field-emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction technique. The tensile strength of the prepared nanofibers was measured to investigate their mechanical properties. Anti-bacterial performance tests were also conducted to understand their biological applications. Zein nanofibers were slightly shrunk and crinkled by increased addition of sorghum extract, and the mechanical and thermal properties of the zein nanofibers were improved. Zein nanofibers containing sorghum extract were found to be effective in controlling bacterial growth. Zein/sorghum extract nanofibers might have practical uses in new preservative or medical applications.</P>

<P>Abstract: </P><P>Melanoma is a malignant skin cancer that displays a high rate of tumor cell migration and metastasis. This study examined how corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) affects the migration of melanoma cells in order to further understand the relationship between stress and tumor cell migration. The migration assay data showed that CRH treatment increased the level of B16F10 cell migration in a dose- and time-dependent manner. To determine whether the extracellular signal-regulated protein kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2) signaling pathway is involved in the upregulation of melanoma migration, cells were pretreated with an inhibitor of ERK1/2 (PD098059). The pretreatment of PD098059 blocked the increase in cell migration. Furthermore, CRH induced the phosphorylation of ERK1/2. The maximum activation of ERK1/2 by CRH was observed at 15 min. Taken together, these results suggest that CRH is an important mediator that regulates the migration of melanoma cells in the skin during stress through the ERK1/2 signaling pathway.</P>

Background: Ear-loop-type Korean Filter 94 masks (KF94 masks, equivalent to the N95 and FFP2) are broadly used in health care settings in Korea for the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. Methods: A prospective randomized open-label study was designed to identify differences in the fitting performance between mask wearing methods in three different types of KF94 mask with ear loops between January to March 2021. General-fitting involved wearing an earloop-type KF94 mask, and tight-fitting involved wearing a mask aided by a clip connecting the ear loops. Each of the 30 participants wore three types of masks according to a randomly assigned order in both methods and performed a total of six quantitative fit tests (QNFTs) according to the occupational safety and health administration protocol. Results: All fit factors (FFs) measured by the QNFT were significantly higher for tight-fitting method with the clip in all KF94 masks (P < 0.001). However, the total FFs were very low, with a median (interquartile range) of 6 (3–23) and 29 (9–116) for general-fitting and tight-fitting, respectively. When wearing tightly, the horizontal 3-fold type mask with adjustable ear-loop length had the highest FF, with a median of 125, and the QNFT pass rate (FF ≥ 100) increased significantly from 4 (13%) to 18 (60%). Conclusion: Even with sufficient filter efficiency, ear-loop-type-KF94 masks do not provide adequate protection. However, in relatively low-risk environments, wearing a face-seal adjustable KF94 mask and tight wearing with a clip can improve respiratory protection for healthcare workers.

Cis-trans photoconversion behaviors of 4-dimethylaminoazobenzenecarboxylate (4DAzC) on gold nanoparticle surfaces have been investigated by means of Raman spectroscopy. The vibrational features indicated that both the cisand trans-conformation should coexist after the adsorption on gold nanoparticle surfaces. After the irradiation of the blue light, the intensities of the cis-form peaks were found to decrease on gold. Our work can demonstrate that Raman spectroscopy can be utilized in studying the photoconversion of azobenzene-containing self-assembled monolayers fabricated on metal surfaces.
